I have no connection to A&M or anyone in Texas, but I know this is real. The Aggie band has been doing this amazing stuff for generations, and they are - by any standard - the best marching band in the world.
any decent high school band can do this simple 8 for five it is the same ol same ol slow and a simple block that just moves a bit. a low standard in a small world would call this a joke Cavaliers or Blue Devils would make this look like a street act
it is not hard if you can count.......I am just saying not the best in the world. You must b mad cause no sax in corps. It is not just the style ...it is the sound. FAMU is a good band as well. The block just dont do nothing for me cant tell about the sound
there is not nothing here that is hard.....maybe marching and playing, there are many high schools in GA and FL that shows harder and better and there are plenty of Directiors that could do and teach this
High school bands wouldn't be able to keep the lines/diagonals anywhere near as consistent and straight. The aggie band also does a different show for every football game; high schools just work on one show for the entire season. Comparing the aggie band to DCI is apples to oranges. They're two completely different marching styles, and members of the aggie band have more important things to do in the summer like going to military training camps.
where are you from because the ones around here can.....we did a block formation everyday and moved it back and forth. As far as the different show...i bet is is in the shape of a block. If all members of the Aggie Band goes to trainging camp and that is great....proud to have them.....that means they should move faster right. There are plenty of HS that changes the show...i bet there is someone there that did do a year or two of corps
my high school was pretty good at keeping lines. We marched this style too. After talking to a bunch of people who didn't march military in high school, I realized it really takes someone who has done this before to really appreciate it. In my opinion, the modern "corps" style of marching is easier because it requires very little discipline like you said
Short version, no, GA and FL bands couldn't do this. The 4 way cross through is EXTREMELY difficult. Marching back and forth is easy in the fact that it is follow-the-leader, but it takes a lot of discipline and training (not band camp) to make it look perfect and keep perfect spacing. To give you an example of the precision, the FTAB did a run through on Kyle Field when there was dew on the grass; all you could see after they were done were the footprints all in the exact same place.
A real old-fashioned, huge, cadet-style band and classic geometric formations -- I haven't seen that in scores of years. They do quite well, of course.
What the hell would they do without the grid lines? Slam into everything like the Keystone Cops. Maybe Couch Fran could address that in his newsletter. Bwaaaaahaaaa
Um...where is the Four-Way? BQ '95 and I haven't seen a halftime in a number of years...but I distinctly remember doing a 4-way cross every year at the t.u. game. Have I really become "Old Army" in just 11 years?
from the Texas A&M band website: "Some of the Aggie Band's maneuvers are so complex that a computer says that it is impossible to do because they require two people to be in the same place at the same time." the maneuvers are SIMPLE countermarches... its just that all of their computer programming skills just suck ass.
Some of the moves are countermarches. What about four corners? Two countermarches moving through each other perpendicularly. I'm pretty sure that's tough.
Genius, it has nothing to do with that (and I am a former Aggie bandsman and computer science major). The program that they used was adequate and useful for everything except those maneuvers involving menstrual turns (like those displayed here...those would be instances where they band passes through each other and not countermarches). Yes, "menstrual turns" is the technical term. It has to do with Bloody Monday when freshmen first learn how to do those maneuvers; blood is common the first day.
Nice try, but the 4 way cross does require two people to occupy the same space at the same time. I'm not in the band but from what I've seen, it looks like when someone crosses in front of another person, the person they crossed in front of puts their foot in between the person that crossed in front of them's feet. They also have to turn side to side to make this easier to do. It's hard to explain by just writing it out so I know that probably didn't make any sense, but I tried.
ive always loved the speach before the final halftime show

6 to five. 30 inch steps. always. except when it is 15 during a counter march. High school bands do it. it is hard. get over stupid corps style.

Why the thumbs down? He's right.. Any decent high school band could easily do these moves. Not difficult.

"Any decent" high school band cannot do the 4-way and I doubt any HS band director would allow them to try it.

to be clear, this wasn't the 4-way, but it was a variation on it.
