I was born in Vietnam, left for the states at the age of 6. I actually attended first grade there but left half way. My speaking and comprehending in Vietnamese is almost perfect and I consider vietnamese as my first language, but I can't read or write in Vietnamese
@bluedestiny It's because she's from the south. Southerners will prounce eat " ang " while the northerners will pronounce it " an ". It's just the accent. We ( southerners ) always put " g " after " n " when we pronounce.
thank you for your help..i've been wanting to go back and learn vietnamese...its just occured to me to look into youtube..thank you VictoriaVickieNguyen...or should I say "cam on em"---yes I think i am older than you...lol
VictoriaVickyNguyen, i've heard ppl say "S" as in S and others in SH. which one is correct or it's just the dialect? I haven't been to the North. But the South say the "S" differently.. I remember a lesson that tells you to be careful when you spell words with S and X....
@chihao148 You are half correct. The dialect of Hà Nội for historic and political reasons is the "national standard". Nonetheless, there are different standards depending on region. For example, the Huế dialect is the standard dialect for central Vietnam as Sài Gòn is the standard for south Vietnam.
Hanoi people pronounce s and x as x. The same is happening is south Vietnam.
@aiwozhonghua Nowadays in colloquial speech, people from all over Vietnam seem to pronounce s as x. S is the spelling pronunciation. It's called sound change, it happens in all languages.
I think u got the pronounciation of "E" as in "Cha" wrong ."E" as in "Che" which means cover. The "E" sound like "eah" in "yeah" or "air" .E for Che and "A" for "cha".Anyway your voice is clear and I wish u do all of the vowels :) 5 stars.
I downloaded this program and there was no mention of q,ă,â in the Viet Alpabet ;(. It just covers a - x,and aint vowels letters start from a -y? example aăâeêioôơuưy?U forgot to mention y or this program I got is worng? Anyway great vid and pronounciation ,just wish U do the pronounciation accent and tone for all the vowels and examples. GREAT 5 stars.
yes, you are right, my example is incorrect, I should have given you the example of "i" as in "Kim" (pronounced keem) or as in "tin" (news, pronouced teen) in the video, the "i" sound is right, pronounce it like "ee", but ignore the example, there is no such word as bi`n in Vietnamese. Thanks for being sharp...there is usually at least one mistake in each video, only two have been pointed out so far, this is one of them
@VictoriaVickyNguyen Actually, the letter i changes into an ư in Southern Vietnamese. Đà Nẵng is located in South Vietnam, and as such i is pronounced as ư (except when standing alone like in bì). ie. Southerners pronounce tin tức as tưn tức.
ngsuching, Well, when the Southerners speak, you can't really tell the difference between A~ and A? because they tend to talk fast. But the North, you can tell the difference. A~ is longer than A?. when you say A~, you should make the tone goes as it is indicated... ~ (curly like that). i don't know if you already knew the answer to this, but i hope i helped. lol!

Why Vietnamese sound so sexy?
Hardbeez 1 year ago
1:39 is not like book (unless you have a strong regional accent from Yorkshire).
Rather, this Viet 'u' sounds like ooh in English - as in the English words 'loo', 'poo', 'goo', 'food' or 'you'.
It's also like the French 'ou'; as in louvre, jour, mouton or oublier.
Keep up the good work!

@bluedestiny That's because she is from the south of Vietnam. There is heavy nasalisation, ie. ăn is pronounced as ăng.

@aiwozhonghua
Your roll your tongue more when you sound S than you sound X.
Actually, the language in Northern side of VN is the standard one. Southern Vietnamese sometimes pronounce S and X similarly.

You are actually pronouncing the viet 'i' as in the English "u" as in English 'bun or fun'
