I am PIM 65. In summer/fall of '06 I was among the students who contested the administration's firing of the Diversity Coordinator and dissolve the program without any plans for covering diversity issues for the graduate programs. I was in the meetings where students confronted Carol & Adam about this and I know that it will take more than upbeat pow-wows to speak to the administration. I realize this is part of larger efforts, but I understand where Jessica's coming from.
I think your efforts are great and they have good intentions... my concern is I don't see this threatening the powers that be. American Idol sing-a-longs don't change Carol Bellamy's policies and social change is more than just organizing for self-expression.
What are the goals you want? How do you want to obtain power back from the SIT administration? Social change doesn't always exist in a vacuum.
I suggest examining different tactics that get results, not style points!
Of all the accomplishments of the various classes at SIT FOR SIT, this is one of the most crucial issues the student body has faced. richyang05, please understand that this video doesn't convey what you're describing. Alumni around the world are dismayed by this yet our voices and words don't mean much unless 1) we donate a LOT of money and/or 2) the current student body represents our/their own legacies thoughtfully, tirelessly, and seriously. This clip doesn't do any of these justice.
Jessica, Thanks for you feedback. We ALL totally agree with you. Unfortunately, A LOT of time went into organizing this day of action, and so this clip was a very quick attempt to show a bit of what happened on Wednesday. It takes a lot of work to put together video, and we are working on it. This was never meant to be a statement of our opposition. It was only to show ONE part of our peaceful demonstration on Boyce Lawn. Thanks for your feedback and we look forward to your contributions!
I completely understand: we were all in the same shoes, and was on staff for nearly 7 years: I am 200% supporting my former colleagues and alma mater with words and deeds. The point I wanted to make if this is your face to the world for alumni old and new, and it comes off as not reflecting the gravity of the situation. Believe we ALL know what's it like to deal with the end of the year, and I applaud your efforts (despite not liking this) as do all thoughtful alumni!
I TOTALLY support what you're doing, and really appreciate that y'all love the ol'place as much as us old timers do, BUT.... Please save songs like this for the multicultural fashion show: if you're going to youtube something, make it a strong statement of resistance. Sorry to sound negative, but you have to fight fire with more than fire at SIT.
Jessica, you are right! And we need the support of more people to fight with fire! While we work on this campaign, finish up our classes, have a social life, and maintain sanity, pardon us for not making a strong statement of reistance with a youtube video! I understand how this video isn't a strong statement of what we are doing, and I can assure that there is a lot more going on than this. Thanks for the feedback, and we will add the recommendation to our workload. Stay tuned and join us!
No need for pardoning or any of that: we have been there and we KNOW how hectic the end of the year is, honestly. As a former staffer and an alum I am behind my colleagues and you all completely, and have made my opinions known about these and related changes to the highest-ups in many ways. My point is that if you're finally presenting the human faces behind your organization, this initial video doesn't do justice to your efforts, that's all. It's not personal... it's OB2 I think.
