@TheDcervi its pretty good. you can adjust them to get a wide range of tones. i use them to get a low battery, horn like sound. kinda what eric johnson goes for. im still tweaking it everyday though to get it to sound right.
dont know the arbiter sounds responsive, but the dunlop sounds louder. but what i have noticed is that the build quality of the arbiter way overshoots the dunlop. the arbiter looks nicely made and the base is galvanised to stop rust, the wiring looks tidy and the casting looks robust like it was made to take 40 years of dr. martens stamping on it. the dunlop looked cheaply made and obviously mass prouced, the casing looked thin and the tread was peeling off in the vid, just my opinions and notes
In my opinion, the newer one sounds a little louder and makes a slightly distorted fuzz sound while the older one has more of a mellow and vintage sounding fuzz. thanks for the demo!
they sound like real fuzz faces nice jimi sound but i think you need a strat for that but still cool ................. lots of guys plugged into les paul's in the old days has a little if not big jimmy page type sound i dig that, but when you roll back the volume on the strat you get that magic sound you cant get with any pedal and thats the hendrix magic love it great ..........................................
this isnt a tru test. because you are running one of thewm through the other so they are gonna sound like which ever is in the front. i can't tell the difference really. just sayin.
@RockThatTele Audio signals aren't effected by resistance, so the distance of wire between the two true bypass switches here isn't going to be enough to have any detrimental effect on the signal. You're only going to find issues when you incorporate upwards of 10 or so true bypass pedals, and pedals with bad switching. This can also happen when you have too many buffered bypass pedals, but generally with two pedals, you won't have any issue.
@RockThatTele I think they are true bypass so that won't be a big factor, and especially so because there are only 2 effects. I think i like the newer one better, it sounds smoother.
The JHF-2 is the internal SKU I believe. The current Hendrix version is JHF-1. When Dunlop started making them here it went to JDF-2, not that it really matters!
@deathmagnetica The cheap 9v batteries kick out better tone than a power supply. I didn't buy that BS when Eric Johnson was talking it, but when I started running OD boxes and such all the time I realized he was right, as much as I don't really care for his tone or playing.
@jlmpeace27 Jack Black is nothing compared to this guy... this dude rocks harder, talks cooler, and doesn`t even earn money acting, instead he LIVES music... oh... my idol...
Does anybody know when Dunlop started producing the earlier, 'Dallas-Arbiter' Fuzzfaces? I bought a new Dallas Arbiter FF back around '88-'89 (Maybe early-1990 at the latest), and since I later sold it, I have no way of telling who made it. Pretty-sure it was red, but I'm not 100% sure. I do remember it sounding pretty-good actually, although my ears have grown a lot since then (Have to wear a big hat to cover them up).
I recently scored A Dunlop Fuzz Face with the Dallas Arbiter logo like you have, any idea when these were made? The guy I bought mine from said he got his in the 90's sometime.
They sound pretty close, but I think I'm hearing more note definition/clarity/musicality (blah blah) on the England, and a heavier preponderance of der bassies on the current model.
For me, the 'England' fuzz is a fair bit better. It's got that feeling that's there's even more energy trying to break out of it. If you listen to the transition from riffage to single note sustain at around 2:36, there's that much more bite to it compared with the equivalent played through the Dunlop, which I'd describe as a bit smoother and flatter.
My day was made when you turned both pedals on at the same time. Waited for that the whole time. Anyway, great review. Might have to go acquire one of these doohickeys.
just kidding on my last comment. fer serious, it sounds like the newer one has a little more gain. Notes seem a little fatter on the newer one and take a little longer to get to die-out land.

@kdmxl007 1)i put guitar in the wah,wah in the dribe, drive in the fuzz and fuzz in the amp:sound is good with drive in bridge position but i dont hear the wah effect with fuzz
2)i put guitar in fuzz, fuzz in drive, drive in wah,wah in amp:when i use fuzz and click wah, sound is verry noisy and that combination killing my ears but sound is great

great demo (gearmann)dude!! I think the Dallas-Arbiter sounds warmer and because I don't want my Fuzz to sound transparant I like that one best. Your voice sounds like Jack Black (Tenacious-D) by the way.
DALLAS ARBITER (RIGHT OR BOTTOM) - sounds fuzzier and more vintagy
CURRENT VERSION (LEFT OR TOP) - sounds slightly louder and more transparent
***like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.***
I skipped the part where you said which one was new and which one was old.
The further away one was muddier but sounded better with the volume rolled off on the guitar. The closer one was a little weaker but clearer. Seemed like it wouldn't cut through as well in a band. Both were good though. When you had the fuzz down a tiny bit, the closer one sounded a lot better.
Together was beautiful though. Glorious....
Neither was really better, but I'd take the vintage one for the vintage sound.
Both sound like crap and have New Production NKT275 remakes. the gains on those trannies are way to low for a usable FF, like 20-30 hfe each. my early 90s reissue sounded horrid so i ripped out the board, used a new pcb, used good trannies and components. the only thing these stock Dunlop FFs are good for are their cases in which u can build your own great sounding clone into~!

Jimi Hendrix as well as Stevie Ray Vaughan found out the secret of the coil cable from guitar to Wah in the chain of effects. It adds resistance. What? Did he say that? It's called adjusting the Q. First you back it down & then after the tweaked Wah boost it w Jfet Amp>Fuzz Face or Tube Screamer then > Amp & control it with your Volume control on your guitar.
I bought my Red Dallas Arbiter up off 183 N. in Austin Tx. in 1986 It sounds fantastic with a carbon 9 volt battery. I use an 83 Strat >My Custom Built Wah>Dallas Arbiter Fuzz> Fender Twin 100 Watt. Gotta use the coil cord. Tune to E flat for playing Jimi & Stevie
Use carbon 9 volt bats only. Alka 9 volt bats start at about 9.6-9.8 volts & these germanium fuzzes sound best at exactly 9 volts. It is best to only run them only on 9 volts or the transistors may be damaged & never sound the same.
The current production one seems to be a bit more trebley where as the vintage one seems a bit fuller. The modern one also appears to have a bit more volume however this could be attributed to the added treble and is just perceived volume.
at least the left one seems to cut through better, a little more focused, the right one is a little farty and looser - maybe a little more authentic to an original germanium fuzz face, cant really tell which one is better though.
Mongo no like when GMD crank vol on pedal. Mongo want clean amp for demo. Why GMD do that? Mongo want to crush GMD head sometimes. Mongo no like to drive preamp. ...........Mongo sorry, Mongo no crush GMD head.........Mongo sleep now.

The current production one seems to be a bit more trebley where as the vintage one seems a bit fuller. The modern one also appears to have a bit more volume however this could be attributed to the added treble and is just perceived volume.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
the diference could been cause by the cable...
The white coily cable is not as good as a straight cable

the signal goes through both cables. That wont affect anything unless he was using A/B box to do the switching. And he didnt

yup the one on the left sounds thicker and more cut thru .
TheSAJ11 2 years ago
doubt doubt..
at least the left one seems to cut through better, a little more focused, the right one is a little farty and looser - maybe a little more authentic to an original germanium fuzz face, cant really tell which one is better though.

Mongo no like when GMD crank vol on pedal. Mongo want clean amp for demo. Why GMD do that? Mongo want to crush GMD head sometimes. Mongo no like to drive preamp. ...........Mongo sorry, Mongo no crush GMD head.........Mongo sleep now.

the circuit board could be made out of cardboard, it's an insulator so i't cant affect the sound - could affect the durability, though.
yearofrolling 2 years ago
does the silicon circuit board (not transistor) contribute anything to the actual sound of the pedal?

I agree with guitarista1988, the new is better. Neither of them are my favs tho, sorrry Dnlop. I like the Z Vex fuzz factory and the MXR Classic fuzz and the mi audio neo and gi fuzzes
