I saw buddy live at the blues festival in portland, oregon. The story behind the song is: he was 17 years old, poor living in a busted up house in the south. he was watching his mom comb her hair in a broken mirror. he says" mom , your so beautiful" she responds " beauty is only skin deep".
One of the best performances I've seen on Dave's show...This song has all the elements of a great song...Beautiful lyrics, beautiful melody, beautiful instrumentals...Buddy Guy is brilliant!
He's amazing. I have seen him live a dozen times -- sometimes by himself, sometimes as part of a bunch of musicians. He is amazing. Fantastic musician, great showman, and a smile that makes you smile too. Also it's nice that he makes music that is good (not just great music (which it is) but I mean good in that it is good, godly, tells a good message). (okay, I am a bit nerdy). I just wish that he would get some radio airtime. Can't wait to see him again.
yesterday, april 18th, my parents got me tickets for my birthday (april 13th) to a Buddy Guy concert in kelowna, it was my first concert that I have ever been to, 74 years old and that man can still rock a guitar like no other, he loved us Canadian fans and wanted to play all night for us, all I can say is thank you Mom and Dad for raising me up with classic rock and the blues, what a great 17th birthday present :)
Buddy Guy has been called the bridge between the blues and rock and roll. He is one of the historic links between Chicago electric blues pioneers Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf and popular musicians like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page as well as later revivalists like Stevie Ray Vaughan. Vaughan stated that, "Without Buddy Guy, there would be no Stevie Ray Vaughan."
I've seen him live and he puts on a show like no other, I could go see him a hundred times and never get bored. This song is just great, I just wish real music like this could get spread like the pop songs today are.
Nobody does it better than Buddy...Great song, great vibe, great singer...Is it just me or does Buddy not look like a black version of the Dalai Lama?
Fuck a priest !! that is the bollocks ! g'wan Buddy--love the slightly out of tune sitar guitar..........only you could do it my man !! I dread the day when Buddy and BB leave us.........whose gonna fill their shoes............nobody !!

By the by,....If you get to heaven and want to go to the music section...and ask for your favorite genre...just .how far back does their Classic's section go? :)
Just saw him at Bamajam Saturday night. They are a tremendous band and buddy is as talented as advertised. I worked my way right up to the front row right in front of him. It was an unexpected religious experience for sure.
Buddy sang this at the Byron Bay Blues Festival in Australia at Easter, just the greatest, absolutaley fantastic.I was hoping that someone would put this song up.Many thanks.
saw Buddy and BB King perform in NYC on friday. BB is slipping a little with age, still great though when he sings. Buddy rocked the show though. We all felt that that based on how they performed BB should have opened for Buddy, but because of his legendary history, of course, that would never happen.
fabulous rich tone on that unusual guitar, it must have seymour duncans or hotwired lace something or other...anyone know where i can get one of these...SO I CAN GIVE THE SHOP A WIDE BERTH..!
@tom36450 - it's an electric sitar. It's hard to make out the make or model in this video. You can sort of see the sympathetic strings on the upper side - they are not fretted and vibrate on harmonics of the regular strings that Buddy is fingering. Google Coral Sitar.
what a beautiful song.. speaking as a 20 year old guy from england, as long as great people like buddy guy are around to inspire people like me, the blues will never die
When american music companies tried to stamp out Rhythm and Blues in the late 40s and 50s British and Irish teens took up the slack then produced their own brand of blues like Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher, Peter Green, Gary Moore, Clapton, even Thin Lizzy. All partly inspired or derivative of the originals.
buddy is one of the nicest people you could ever meet hes learned lifes lessons well and hes not bitter he came to the horse shoe here and i met him he signed my guitar great guy

Buddy Guy is still as smooth and mellow as ever...That performance gave me goosebumps...This man truly is one of the greatest blues singers and guitarists of all time...Thank you Buddy!!!
I have seen this man 7 times. I try and see him every time he comes near my town. Now before I say what I'm about to say, I'll tell you this. I've seen Clapton, BB, Cray, and a few more, and more than once. And every one of them are impeccable performers. I love them all. But none of them can touch the heart and soul that this man, Buddy Guy, puts in to each and every one of his performances. He is without a doubt.....my favorite Blues ARTIST ever!!!!!!
Saw him at the Hollywood Bowl last night July 12, 2009 and he is most amazing in person ...his new album Skin Deep is really worth the money... he is bawdy and funny and sincere...and a real gem! Deservedly in the Hall of Fame... I feel honored to have seen him perform!
He gets the sound on purpose, it's a SITAR (related to the traditional Indian Sitars, this one is a SITAR brand, actually).........and the neck IS rosewood. I'm not sure about the body, but I believe it's maple.
@RickFreeloader Actually, Rick, he's playing an electric sitar. Notice the harp above the strings. The twang comes from a resonator above the bridge. The only pick up is a single coil at the neck. I played that particular model a few months back, it sounded cool, but I never thought it to be applicable unless to add a little flavor in songs, and I was right, but Buddy uses it so well.
@RickFreeloader The sound is like that of a sitar. Buddy's instrument has sympathetic resonance strings, looks like an autoharp, above the six strings. The Turtles used one. George Harrison played Sitar, & is responsible for importing this sound into pop music. Ravi Shankar, his teacher, lives in Encinitas, CA. These instruments were made in the 60s&70s.
No he hasnt. And if you're thinking he is old, watch his concert in Sydney played on his 90th birthday. He's more alive than most of us youngsters wallowing under the dead layers of commerical music and political correctness.
One leg to the east and one to the west. I'll go right up the middle and try my best. Yes, surprisingly vulgar. However he was good. Saw him a few hours ago.
Saw him at CPCC in Charlotte, NC last month. He was surprisingly vulgar in some of his jokes, but it added an element of comedy to the performance. He is the king of the blues, and if he ever comes to your town, please go. The amps were 20 feet tall, and he played solos while walking through the crowd. He put on a hell of a show, and I will never forget it. Thank you Buddy. After all these years, you are still the king. Skin Deep. Underneath, we all are the same. So true. Thank you.
Saw him in New London CT last night. He's incredible. You would never know he's 72 years old. He moves around like a 20 year old. His voice is loud and strong and he has awesome vocal control. If you have the opportunity to see him, GO! You won't regret it.
I seen him in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the best. You will not regret going to see him. He played his guitar at one point in the concert like he was a child in a candy store and smiled the whole time.
