oooo Great List! I see your point about using films based on real facts and people.. Hang on..Are you trying to Imply Conan wasn't a genuine person?! Otherwise great films!!
Can anyone help me, I'm looking for a particular movie that I saw, while watching another person's computer screen at a local internet cafe? I can't remember the name of the movie, but I know he was watching it on youtube and it had roughly 20 parts or something. I can recall however that it read something like "seasons of mist" but I've searched for it and I couldn't find a movie like it. Care to help? (About looking at another persons screen, I just glanced, thus why I can't remember the name)
no 'middle ages'. perhaps. Constantinople fell in 1450-something; the last vestige of Rome. Columbus sailed west in 1492. Kinda surreal; they almmost overlap. Since you included 'The Message', couldn't you, by extension, include some Japanese feudal films by Akira Kurosawa, like Rashomon? (I'm being facetious) very canny, including Name of the Rose. Some early technicolor medieval movies make life look so hygenic
@milas1976 Kingdom of Heaven was more accurate than a lot of medieval movies... Nobody ever rags on Braveheart or for that matter, "Robin Hood" (talk about "in name only")
great movies. all of them. ofc there are more. a list 10 can't cover them all. there are more that deserve remembering and apreciation. Still, these are without a doubt, excelent. Hats down.
I suggest "A Walk with Love and Death". It's not the epic type but it effectively grabs the spirit of the time and tells a story without grandstanding on larger issues. There is a place for films like that.
Johan Huizinga, author of the "Waning of the Middle Ages" says that this time period began with the crowning of Charlemagne on Christmas Day in the year 800. 1455 is a good date for their end, but I'm inclined to believe that 1492...the discovery of the New World and the expulsion of the Moors from Spain...marks the true end, at least in Western Europe. The Middle Ages continued in Slavic Europe for another century and a half.
On the other hand, the discovery of the new world is seen by some as just another effort to spread catholicism and fill the coffers of the Spanish crown. In any case, given that "Middle" or even "Dark" Age are mainly derogatory terms born out of a superiority complex in the Renaissance, putting a precise date on when it began and when it ended is kind of semantic.
@ohauss there are more than one couse of the end of the middle ages "so called dark ages" some of main couses are mass use of gunpowder in siege warfare (1453 siege of constantinopol is first example) discovery of new world is another couse (also discovery of new trade routes to east) renaissance and reform movements are also coused end of the mid ages and others but we cant tell an exact date so most popular date is 1453. good movies by the way :)
I would also add Flesh and Blood (though that could be early renaissance) i also loved brave heart and jean d'arc the messenger, but those to are completely smothered by artistic license
you guys really should watch "mihai viteazul" or in English title is "the last crusade" i think it's about the life of Romania's greatest king in the middle ages i know it sounds like a piece of shit but believe me it's really great especially the battle scenes are epic give it a try if you can find it with subs and thank me later :)
For anyone who thinks Kingdom of Heaven was horrible, check out the Director's Cut DVD. It adds an hour of footage that fleshes out the characters and makes the movie far, far better than the theatrical version.
So... the next day after the last emperor of Rome was gone, a man from western Europe woke up in the morning and said: '' Hei, look, I'm in the middle ages! ''
"The Name of the Rose" is the only film that I liked Sean Connery. I thought his father figure witty, insightful, convincingly intelligent and probing. I thought Christian Slater was an odd choice for a virginal uncertain acolyte. But he acquitted himself well in the part, his trademark smirking looks put on hold for some solid acting.
Kingdom of Heaven definately. The only problem with the movie was Orlando Bloom, who, for the entire lenght of the film looked like a deer caught in the headlights.
U cld have infinite arguments over which flix merit inclusion; everyone wld have a different list. This one's a great list.
I'd never heard of "The Message" before; looking forward to seeing it.
Bit surprised not to see "The Messenger," by Luc Besson (5th Element, Leon/The Professional, La Femme Nikita/Point of No Return, Transporter flix) starring his then-wife Milla Jovovich, in which she proved she's not just another beyond-gorgeous face, but can really act.
In the case of Braveheart i prefer the movies i put in this two clips. In the case of Troy, the war of Troy occur between 1700 or 1800 before the Middle Ages, so it would be strange if i used that movies for this clip don't you think? ; )
@Hallsvilleathlete71 Thank you for your comment. The war in Troy occur 1800 before the Middle Ages, thats's 1,000 years B.C. if you consider the Middle Ages began in 800 AD. I don't know why are you calling me dumbass. I never said the Trojan wars were in 1800 A.D.
@Bors9 Well that's true if you consider the last western roman emperor ruled until that year. The same with 1453 and the fall of Constantinople caused by the turks. I think this are symbolic dates..some historians consider the Middle Ages finished (In France) until the late XVIII century, during the Revolution! I said the Middle ages finished in 800 A.D. just because of the coronation of Charlemagne, some people will say this is just another year of the Late Antiquity.Thank you for your comment.
@Bors9 Fair assessment. But I would say the fall of the Roman Empire represented the beginning of the Dark Ages. Dark Ages was sort of like the baby Middle Ages. Some of the first notable battles of the Middle Ages begins with Normans conquering valuable lands. 1066 with the Battle of Hastings and the 1st Crusade of 1096, saw the Middle Ages in full swing. 800s through 900s was the transition from Dark Ages to Middle Ages, as 300s through 400s was the transition from Classical to Dark Ages.
In the case of Braveheart and Jean d' Arc (I imagine you're talking about Luc Besson's Version), i prefer this movies. About Excalibur: i tried to use movies based in real facts and people (kind of, with the exception of Ladyhawke, in the first part), and Excalibur is based in the arthur's myth: a Legend). I'm not saying the movies is bad, i love it, in fact i have it in anoter clip i created about epic fantastic movies.
@Sedulous34 - Holy Grail takes place in DARK AGES. . .not Middle Ages - same is true about Excalibur. Braveheart and the 1999 The Messanger (Story about Joan of Arc) could certainly qualify.
um i dont know if youve seen this movie but i think braveheart is like number one in the middle ages movie thats just my opinion i still think you picked really good choices
hehehehe... very funny the comment you just got there... I liked very much your list... (seeing also that, happily, you don't get stock on Hollywood)... Have you seen Tristan et Iseult? (France 1972)
I take it you're a Bergman fan. I'm currently wathing his films chronologically (although I'm probably going to stop at Passion of Anna... I really prefer his black and white.)

yuove got some very gay ass picks there man they suck and for each one to show it takes forever to show it whers spartacus, lord of the rings, gladiator come on man
Thanks for watching my video and for the comment. For your information:
1.- "Spartacus" is not a movie about the medieval period, it's about a greek slave in the roman empire (i have another list with movies of that thematic and you can find it there).
2.- "Lord of the Rings" They didn't exist, it's fantasy written in the 20th century.
3.- "Gladiator" is like Spartacus, it's a film about the roman period, by the way, it's a remake and it's also in my other list.
But Braveheart was pretty much middle ages. Come on..wtf? it should be #1. First Knight was "meh" but still better than some of these you listed. ONLY MY PUNY OPINION THOUGH. Thanks for giving out yours through these vids.. cheers.

What about The lion in winter (the original version With O'toole and Hepburn)
Easily one of the best films ever made and not just in reference to the period.
Although I guess as there no action or flashy visuals i can understand the logic, but for story and performance its in a class of its own.
Have you seen it?
