Tad, Mudhoney, The Melvins, Dinosaur jr, Seaweed, the whole Subpop catalog, Pearl Jam, the Meat Puppets... ad naseum wouldn't be known if it wasn't for them. Plus all the other major acts influenced/ made more famous due to them!!-- Sound Garden, Alice & Chains, STP, Bush....

However, I would argue that the successive eras of music do objectively ebb and flow in quality. No one could reasonably convince me or anyone that the pop music from 1998-2003 was better than the pop music from 1966-1971. Matchbox 20 vs Zeppelin? Seriously? Point is, like in Literature, Painting, etc - pop music does have peaks and valleys of importance/timelessness.
