Are people really debating Transubstantiation in youtube comments? Wow. Books have been written about this. Read some while listening to this lovely rendition of a song first published in 1906 taken from the versification of a translation of portion of a 4th century litany married to a French tune.
from The Articles of Religion of the Methodist Church XVI-XVIII at umc.org Article XVIII—Of the Lord's Supper
Transubstantiation, or the change of the substance of bread and wine in the Supper of our Lord, cannot be proved by Holy Writ, ... and hath given occasion to many superstitions.
The body of Christ is given, taken, and eaten in the Supper, only after a heavenly and spiritual manner. And the mean whereby the body of Christ is received and eaten in the Supper is faith.= no Real Presence
@jazzybroad Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, arranged by Larry Shackley; Hope Publishing Co. cat. # C 5243. (Optional clarinet or viola not used in this performance.)
i'm not even religious. I don't believe in god and I don't like church music. I was forced to sing in my churches choir growing up. But this hymn, the way it's written, is just epic.
"rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the light of light descendeth from the realm of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish, as the darkness clears away."
Epic. Just epic. they don't write 'em like that anymore.
too bad Methodist don't believe in the Real Presence of the Holy Eucharist, since this is what this song is about, not the birth in Time of Jesus, but His coming among us in the Most Holy Mysteries of the Divine Liturgy of the Roman and Orthodox Churches.
@burkardhanis You're quite right about the origin of the text of the hymn as sung here, but the melody being used for it actually derives from an old French carol, "Jesus Christ s'habille en pauvre," which does deal with the incarnation of Christ on earth. And as he instituted the Eucharist as a commemoration of the Last Supper he had with his disciples while on earth, it seems to me that it does no harm to perform the hymn as a Christmas remembrance...
@philipvanlidth no, not a commemoration...but an where we enter into the Saving acts of His Life-giving Cross and Glorious Resurrection and meet Him, Body & Soul and Blood & Divinity under the guise of Bread/Wine.
@burkardhanis In the Gospel of Luke it says, "And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me." So yes, a commemoration, both of the last supper and of the sacrifice he was about to make.
@burkardhanis : Sir, you are a totally ignorant fool to say such a thing. You have no thorough understanding of what or why this being performed. Maybe, you too were abused by a priest!
@davbear221 I am sorry that you were abused by a member of the Clergy davbear221. I was not. And to my detractors, please look up the source for the words to the hymn and the Methodist teaching on the "Lord's Supper" and you will see I have not misstated anything.
@Chariset believing in it doesn't mean you have It....can you read the anaphora of both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches and agree with those prayers and statements of belief? Do you believe that the clergy is offering the Holy Oblation/Sacrifice to the Father, the same one given by the Son on the Cross and pre-figured at the Last Supper? If you can say yes to those, the male clergy of the Methodist denomination need to get properly ordained so you can have the Real Presence.
You miss the entire point. This about the performance of the choir, not your views on religion. If anybody wants to know your views they can e-mail you. And oh, by the way, just because you say they don't have the 'true real presence', doesn't make you right.

@burkardhanis I agree. If only the world really knew what occurs inside a Roman/Orthodox Church!

Comment about the performance from the choir (which is very good), not about your bigoted religious views (which is annoying and quite uninformed).
BuangShrek 3 months ago
@BuangShrek not bigoted....I've actually read what the Methodist teach about the communion service...very much a Calvinistic point of view.
