People slagging off this perfectly good homage from Morrisey should be recognizing that Morrisey obviously has great taste in music. Gilbert would be proud to hear this song given it's dues by one of his modern day contemporaries, only a fool would think otherwise
Wow, so many people with such highly-developed aural senses they can make a value judgement on a low-quality sound recording that us normals can barely discern. You should form a superhero team or something.
This is brilliant stuff and its not at all surprising he chose to cover O'Sullivan. They have a very similar, very literate writing style. A lot of O'Sullivans songs are dark.
It's not a 'Black' version at all. A lot of the sentiments Gilbert o sullivan was expressing in this song are the same that Morrissey was re-enacting years later. It is an honest homage on M's part to a great song.,...
I had no idea that Morrissey had covered this. I hate to say 'on so many levels', but I love that fact on so many levels.... ha ha. It's to do with being too cool in the mid-70s (about the time of the God-awful 'Claire') to be a lover of Guildford and Surbiton, but subsequently adoring him - particularly this song - and having turned out to be a raving Smiths' lover (I've rarely been fanatical about anything) in my teens... yes, that's only two levels... I'll keep the rest... ty v much anyways x
moRRiSSey ...RRubbiSSh ....what an insult to a wonderful song ......he should've left well alone ....and murdered something else ........if it was meant as a tribute then i'm sure GO'S is well chuffed !
As my 17 year old daughter would say...'kill me now'...

I like this version as well as the original. It's slower than Gilbert's but still works

Now if he could only sing it like Burton Cummings...
gjg1656 1 year ago
@gjg1656 Oh, please, Cummings mangled the lyrics. Sorry, but I can't respect a cover that can't get the lyrics right. This one isn't much better.

Quite frankly, this is appalling.

Morrissey, you you sure know how to share/impede your pain with/on us, but perhaps you could find other ways to terrorize people not quite deaf??
Thank you!
