I have spent over 20 fruitless years searching out this album! I have some of the songs on compilations but not the whole. Thanks for uploading this rare clip!
Nik Kershaw was one of the most amazing sequence programmers back in the day and he had an incredible ear for groove and sound , This song was most lightly programmed, As one person commented Mark King Played on the Song Easy, Remember the DX7 and DX5s. Everyone was using those sounds for bass, regardless it was a great album. I believe his new album is amazing too, all round what a great talent.
@123rozo If you want to hear possibly the best example of his skill at synth programming, try and hunt down the B Side "One Of Our Fruit Machines Is Missing". Amazing!
I saw Nik in Liverpool in the 80's. His support was T'Pau. He headed in the wrong direction after releasing When A Heart Beats. The Riddle and Human Racing albums were masterpieces. Something went wrong after that.
An extremely underrated songwriter. I bought this wonderful album at the time and replaced it on CD after many years of searching. I don't think I ever saw this video - thanks for posting !
@bosunbilly I can't understand all of the lyrics. I will look them up. I agree with a lot of the other comments that Nik was certainly overlooked and a brilliant songwriter/artist.
@bosunbilly Completely disposable, processed music that resembles a sugary can of Coke? Yes! I at least HOPE that was what he was implying Music+Cola=Musicola. :)
I stole the cassette of this album in about 1987?? from WHSmith in Romford, Essex, England. Listened to it non-stop on my way to work from Gidea Park To Brentwood; I realise this means nothing to anyone, but I'm reminiscing!!!
I used to love this song. When I saw this video on Music Box this was the first time that I have ever heard of Nik Kershaw. My family moved to England in 1986 until 1989. With a bunch of ads from the telly and Record Mirror I though that this was bound to crack the UK Top 40. It's hard to believe that it peaked so low in the top 75. Thank you for finally posting the video.
MKings bass line really keeps the track going and funky! However the horn playing is my favourite. Pity about video. Ok, Nik standing while corridor moves is a neat trick, but overall its a bit depressing! Maybe that's the idea, keeping in context with the song.
@cafste3make That's not MK playing bass, it's a synth bassline. He played on a track or two on the previous album, The Riddle (notably 'Easy'). Admittedly though this track does have a very L42 feel to it.
Does anyone else think the edit in to the first verse at 00:34 (removing the radio voices from the album version) is pretty dodgy?!!
F*** Yeah! Awesome song! I never knew Mark King was behind the bass on this. I always thought it sounded like his thumb work.
I love the opening on the CD version with the radio station chat in NY City.
You're listening to the best sounds around. How ya doing? 71 degrees in Central Park. The beat goes on and on on the best mix in New York. Radio Musicola is on the air!
Great Fairlight polyrhythmic programming. A bright spot in the decline of 80's music (unfortunately Nik was popular the same time Michael Jackson and Madonna ruined pop music.)
(I'm curious coz I've always loved this bassline). Where did you get that from? - is MK credited on the sleeve? It sounds like it's a sequenced bass synth? - any idea if he actually played it - or just programmed it?
I remember that when this song was published on musical papers they wrote that Mark King played the bass, in fact the first time i heard this song i recognised immediately his style...maybe he programmed it....but for sure i remember that was him playing the bassline...i hope not to be wrong!!! :)
Mark King isn't credited, and the sleeve notes indicate that (apart from live horns and guitar) this is a synth-programmed track. Mark King did play bass on Kershaw's 1984 album track "Easy" from "The Riddle".
Underrated song... This is GREAT!!

This is a depressingly beautiful description of payola. Sad and unfortunately true. Nik is GENIOUS.

It's not Mark King on bass, it's an example of Nik's own ace programming.
One of the most under-rated British songwriter/musicians of all time ( a brilliant guitarist in the Alan Murphy vein apart from anything else)

And the thing is Nik was absolutely prophetic about the where the music industry would eventually end up.
Everything he said in this song has come to pass.
