They were forced to mine. Look at them Micheal is completely taking the piss out of it. There are times he isn't even facing the mic or even opening his mouth
I'm surprised people on here are bemoaning the fact it's not a live performance. The producers expected bands to lip sync on TotPs, even accomplished bands like REM. The show had a high turnover of acts and it wouldn't be practical to play live for just one song. TotPs was a cheaply made entertainment vehicle reflecting current single sales. There were rare exceptions, New Order and, I think, Nirvana.
I think i remember hearing from Pete Waterman, who had loads of acts on TOTP.
And he basically said that it was the decision of the record label. But as it happens, all of his acts mimed, as it was a matter of CD sales...No one wants the live performance to sound different from the studio version.
Its rarely a decision the actual acts make, i mean thats why MUSE always take the piss whenever they are asked to mime, as its not their decision.
He covers his mouth with the megaphone everytime he 'sings' because his miming was so poor he couldn't make it look convincing. Must be true because I read it on wikipedia.
@Naoisevl Why do people always say that? TOTP were happy for artists to sing live if they could provided they could provide an instrumental backing track.
Also, as early as 1980 some acts insisted on playing 100% live with the best known examples probably being Iron Maiden and New Order.
@AndyAufAnglo HI Andy its been a year since your post and like me, you probably did it after a few beers. But the point I am making is that the more accomplished Bands would happily sing live, as a way of sorting the wheat from the chaff, one memorable performance when playing and singing live was Simply Reds holding back the years from 1985 which stood out to me because compared to his fellow peers he actually could and did sing live and sounded like his released recording,
Just like Morrissey did in 1983 with the Smiths when he went on stage and sang with no mic, Stipe hides behind a megaphone to show disapproval with lip syncing. Awesome.
I remember watching this .Then i remember my disappointmen at taping over it.I think fuzzbox were on before them..pink pink sunshine.saw them in Dubling on June 24th that year. Immense

jeez who cares if they mimed in this ONE performance. We all know they were bloody amazing live anyway!

Hang on, what does the presenter say at the end? It cuts off too soon to hear, I think.

"We'd circle and we'd circle and we'd circle to stop and consider and
centered on the pavement stacked up all the trucks jacked up and
our wheels in slush and orange crush in pocket and all this here county
hell any county it's just like heaven here and I was remembering and I
was just in a differnet county and all then this whirlybird that I
headed for I had my goggles pulled off I knew it all I knew every back
road and every truck stop"
A rather nice anti-war song!

one of maybe two or three un-live performances by REM I heard of. It's hard to lip sync for a band who never play one song the very same way.
I think TOTP should have been completely taken off for the time they use pre-recorded tapes

because he didn't believe in miming and it was TOTP policy then, so he took control. Nice

Yes, they are. Everything was playback, including the instruments.

i thought the first video stipe ever lip synced in was loosing my religion? this is embarrassing
EclipseNT 2 years ago
I think Stipe is on record as saying that he didn't want to lip sync, but was forced to. Hence the megaphone.
