Is it just me or was this an OK finish to the event? I turned my lights off and all electrical appliances for the full hour in support of Earth Hour. Then at 9:00 to my dismay, FIREWORKS!! Fireworks!!?? On Earth Hour night!! Did somebody screw up because isn't Earth Hour about the environment or were environmentally friendly fireworks used? Am I the only one concerned? Our city is not part of it..but as an individual i have turned off the lights..in the Philippines the Metro Manila has participated (population 11 Million)in Earth Hour 2008..i hope next year Mega Manila (population 30 Million) will take part in this activity.
I'm from the Philippines, my housemates and I contributed to this worldly executed event by turning off our lights in an hour... It's such a minute thing but at least participating in my own little way manifests my sensitiveness to what global warming is... Let's all take part to this...
The real idea's come with inventions like the one that turns heat from your processor into sound waves, then back into electricity. Imagine if something like that were in every server in the world. It would save a massive amount of power over time and could be moved to new hardware and thus only need to be produced once ever several years. just think about what your doing, and remember... the power company will still produce power.
Heat is the largest loss of energy when using anything. So why not promote solar panels instead? Major manufacturers decided to put solar panels on almost every calculator in existance, why can't we promote home builders to do the same instead of convincing the ignorant public that energy you buy from the electric company is clean? Just because your car is electric doesn't mean it didn't take "dirty" energy to produce it's parts or it's power source.
Most people also don't consider the power it takes to produce "earth friendly" products. Like the idea of plugging your car into your hosue outlet. The batteries take energy to produce and the energy that comes out of your house likely comes from a coal plant. My point is this... If you really want to dump tons of time and effort and money into an energy saving cause, it needs to be done slightly different.

I'm not saying that is all we can do in this world. I spend much of my time gathering the facts, trying to figure out how I can do something. I think that this could be a jumping off point for a lot of people, when it can be scary and confusing with all of the issues and mixed messages. And I wasn't alive in 1966. Every step we take, no matter how small, can start something bigger, and it doesn't do anything to negate other people's attempts to help.

The electrical system is a bit more complex, there's more energy generated that we use, it's true, but if the power usage lowers, the power's attributes changes (frequency, potential) and based on these values, the plants balances their productivity. This balance is controlled by a central system in each country.
But even if it doesn't occures, it's about warning you to these things happening in the world, and what some people will do after it, could lower the energy usage, and that's the goal.

Our city is not part of it..but as an individual i have turned off the lights..in the Philippines the Metro Manila has participated (population 11 Million)in Earth Hour 2008..i hope next year Mega Manila (population 30 Million) will take part in this activity.

The real idea's come with inventions like the one that turns heat from your processor into sound waves, then back into electricity. Imagine if something like that were in every server in the world. It would save a massive amount of power over time and could be moved to new hardware and thus only need to be produced once ever several years. just think about what your doing, and remember... the power company will still produce power.

Heat is the largest loss of energy when using anything. So why not promote solar panels instead? Major manufacturers decided to put solar panels on almost every calculator in existance, why can't we promote home builders to do the same instead of convincing the ignorant public that energy you buy from the electric company is clean? Just because your car is electric doesn't mean it didn't take "dirty" energy to produce it's parts or it's power source.

Most people also don't consider the power it takes to produce "earth friendly" products. Like the idea of plugging your car into your hosue outlet. The batteries take energy to produce and the energy that comes out of your house likely comes from a coal plant. My point is this... If you really want to dump tons of time and effort and money into an energy saving cause, it needs to be done slightly different.
