I love that dog, and look at him too! He's so gorgeous and knows it! My grandmum broke my eardrums when he won, we were surprised, though so very hopeful. lol Like last night the Scottish Deer Hound won. We thought the Pek would win since the judges were so into him. lol

I have a one year old bernese mt dog! and im thinking of getting another bernese the song of (Avatars Try Try Again) the number one dog in canada. but im also conisdering a newfoundland...hard hard choice...the only thing stopping me from getting one is the drooling. Bernese have dry mouths...anyways both have great temperaments and both are so similar in many ways

I am a Newfoundlander. I also have the pleasure of living with a Newfoundland dog. Also, I can assure you, most of the people here detest that word. Calling the dog a "Newf" is acceptable. However, the term "newfie" is taboo. Until 1949, when Canada "joined" Newfoundland, we were an independant country. Many here still do not consider themselves to be Canadian, probably because they are still often reffered to by Canadians as "those newfie's". I side with the "paki's & "japs" with our revulsion

The judge is Japanese...............had he been asked to rate an Akita, would he have been OK with calling the contestent a "Jap".....were the Judge from Pakistan; would he be OK with referring to the entrant as a "Paki". I'm from Newfoundland, Josh is one impressive dog, but, he's not a newfie, he is a Newfoundland

As far as I know, nobody complains about the "Lab" tag or the other "nick names" you mention. But that's because none of those are ever used to insult people. The word "newfie" is very often used to demean or otherwise insult people from this place. Don't you understand, would you refer to a dog as a "paki" in front of a person from Pakistan

Well that's just stupid logic. The name of his breed is Newfoundland. I would bet that no less than 99% of Newfie owners call their dogs just that. As do I. While the judge fro Japan might take umbrage to being called a "Jap," I'm sure the Guy from Sweden wouldn't object to being called a "Swede."

The proper collective term of a person from Sweden is Swede, that is agreed to by every 1. However, Jap, Paki, Newfi, are all highly offensive. The Newfoundland is so closely associated with NFLD that that !#&*$ awful word is VERY often also applied to the people fr here & it pisses us off.. Is that so hard to understand. 99% of NFLD owners can't even pronounce "Newfoundland" correctly. Listen to the audio on this clip; pathetic. So you think the judge is Ok with "Jap". See, what you're doing is confusing the "place" with the "breed". If people don't pronounce the name of the place where you live properly, that really has nothing to do with the dog breed, or fanciers of the breed. Newfouldland dogs are called "newfies" for the same feason that Labrador Retrievers are called "labs," Deal with it.

My comment re prounciation was meant to point out that the people who so often expouse upon the breed.,claiming to have "in-depth" knowledge, can't often even prounounce the name of the dog/province correctly. You know, I've formed the opinion that anybody wishing to aquire a Newfoundland should be required to visit the island first so they may then understand how the breed acquired it valued attributes.The Lab, formerly known as "The lesser Newfoundland" is content with being a Lab BTW

How is Newfie an offensive word to us? I'm born and raised Newfie and don't give a rats ass who calls me it. I do agree that a lot of people pronounce Newfoundland wrong. I call ppl from Nova Scotia Scotians all the time and they never have a problem so no idea why ur saying we dont like to be called Newfies.

What do you think Danny Williams or Rick Hillier or Rex Murphy would say to being called a newfi. Say, why don't you call the Prov. Govt. and ask them what Danny thinks. Then call The DND and ask for Rick to comment, or, sure, just call Rex at The CBC on Sunday.

And, speaking of pronunciation; Josh's owner appeared on Letterman after the 2004 show. Both she and Dave mangled the word Newfoundland, but, even more telling, the owner mentioned Josh's registered name. It includes the words "Pouch Cove" & she prounced it as "pouch" as in, well, "a place to store or carry things". Very funny really, it's actually pronounced "pooch", yes, like, when referring to a dog . Many Newfoundlanders got a great kick out of that "missed connection" on the owners part.

After seeing the show last night, I had to see if Josh was on You Tube. Even knowing the result, I still felt thrilled when I saw him win on the video. My whole family watched that show, and we all cheered when Josh won. We've had three Newfies. We currently have a Newfie who is related to Josh, and we also have a Great Pyrenees. My daughter and son-in-law have a Pyr and a Bernese Mountain Dog. BIG dogs are the BEST!!

I'm so glad to see this video of Josh here. I'm very happy to be able to watch it, because my Lola, Ch Tabu Seabrook Nobelle Prize ROM, was Josh's great-grandmother. Lola was 3 years old when she retired with me over 14 year ago, and lived to the ripe old age of 13. She had so many gorgeous little boys and girls. Thanks so much for sharing this!
