That place was awful. My great uncle was a patient there for years. He died there in 1980. I was there to visit him a few years befor he passed when I was nine. It was a scary, scary place. They wouldn't let me walk the halls to go upstairs to visit him, so they took us around the outside and up some stairs.
To this day, my family believes that place made my uncle crazy. If it were today he'd have just been a hyper teenager. It's sad, but that place really was a "mad house".
I just toured this place last weekend. It is huge, 2.5 miles of hallway and 9 (not .9) acres of slate roof to give you an idea. At one time they used to perform ice pick lobotomies where they went into the frontal lobes of the brain through the corner of the eyes rather than drilling holes in the skull. There was a doctor that once performed 107 lobotomies in one day so I think it would be safe to say they tortured people, at least by today's standards.
I stood outside this buliding once but was too fricken scared to go in!
