@roticanaispes nope, even though I work in the industry- I showed to a few casting people; and there are so many random 'foreigner' children registered that no one knows; just some kid.
They used to be big in Japan in the 80s and early 90s. Now they're more like The Cure or Depeche Mode in the west, the 'famous old bands' that's not the hot IT band, but a respectable band with a cult-following. They'll always be around and active, and be discovered by new generation over and over.
Me too. I discovered them accidentally three years ago on youtube and they have since become my favourite band. I also cover some of their songs on here if you care to listen. (I apologize in advance for the language mistakes!!). All the best!
never noticed before that demon thing (coming out of sakurai's mouth?) at 2:13.. awesome!! though it freaked me out a lil when i first noticed it. that weird guy with that mask though is freaky!!
I can see both sides of this argument. I'm a long-time BT fan and saw them live a few times during the 90's when I was living in Japan. The reason I like them is tht they've changed and evolved with every album, and didn't give a fxxx what people thought, obviously, or they'd only stick with what sold well. That's the characteristic of a great band, I think. They'll stand the test of time, definitely, despite a weak album here and there.
I was realy confused on the first listen of the new album, personaly... But songs like Mr.Darkness and Mrs. Moonlight grew on me after I heard them a few times and got used to it. With Imai one can expect the unexpected, that's for sure. lol
I'm loveing the album, personaly. There's lots of nods to their older work in it, yet at the same tome they play with sounds and styles that are new to them. Plus, there's still darkness in this album, and tons of sex.... Cream Soda made me fall out of my seat laughing. Fantastic! XD How anyone could call this album pop is beyond me...
it's a pretty strange album. I definetly see some Lucy influence in it... but with a mix of Southwestern musical influence and a little bit of carry-over from 13kai. Then add the popish hooks Imai comes up with. Strange mix! And Selia... wow!

I rented this album the other day, and had not heard any of the songs before, so I was really excited. After the first song, I had to use my headphones, because I felt ashamed. I was expecting someting completely different. I'm really disappointed in Buck-Tick.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The sound, lyrics and attitude is not buck-tick. They are synthpop and industrial, singing about sex, women and punk politics. So many good memories of their concerts in the 90's. Sad to see this commercial crap by them. Now I know why Buck-Tick has lost their status in Japan. At least Soft Ballet is still respected.
I've been 15 years or so fans of them. Of course, some songs I don't like...mostly in Six/Nine, haha.
Though I've been their fans because I like their sense of music. This song relates to "13th floor with moonshine." , from "Diabolo"...of course you know. It seems you also are one of their long fans!
I was also very surprised to hear this song, too, but I can understand Imai mimics "Diabolo" with this song and enjoy themselves playing comical. So I think next album relates to "13th floor with moonshine" very deeply. It sounds interesting, huh? I think it's not too late to quit their fans after listening next Album, "The revolver of an angel".
The last time I was in Japan, the buck-tick audience was completely different. Mostly younger people, while their older fans discarded them. Hope this style pays off for them. Personally I don't like it, it doesnt sound like Buck-Tick.
For me, I like their later singles also. Especially this song, Hisashi wrote lyrics. So he used many, many strange words, it sounds like code or something.
It's very complicated, I know. But you speak Japanese very fluently, right?
And of course you can listen to Japanese very fluently? If you so, I think you can enjoy listening to Hisashi's complicated world! hahaha.
Even when translated into English Imai's strange manner of writing comes through... it's part of what I love about him. lol He explained his logic behind the song in an interview... from how he described it it seems almost like brushtrokes in a painting to me...very unlike traditional poetry like Atsushi's. And then when one reads the lyrics to Diablo and the lyrics to Alice side by side, you start to see a bigger picture. ^-^ It's such a puzle!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I can understand Japanese well. The lyrics are very different, but I guess this is much more mainstream acceptable than singing about french kissing a women between her thighs. Nowadays, I think I will stay with Sakurai's solo work and hope he releases more of it.
Ah, you like Atsushi's solo work... to tell the truth, I don't like that very much. it's just different with my favors, haha. I prefer Lucy, Hisashi's another band to Atsushi.
If you like Atsushi's solo work, "Alice..." can't be accectable, I suppose.^_^;
lol Me, I don't care for Lucy, but I don't hold it against Imai one bit... I love how he does whatever makes him happy reguardless of what people want.
Well, 13kai was a concept album that was suposed to be like a twisted children's bedtime story acording to Atsushi, so it makes sence that he wouldn't be so explicit in it. And then they took a long break for side projects and solo work... So at this point I think it's a 'wait and see'. I can't realy blame them for playing it safe on the singles considering their situation. But that doesn't mean we'll never hear another sex song from them again. LOL
I do like the music you're talking about. But I would call that just a period as well. To my ear they only had significant industrial/electronic influence between 1996 to 2003. That still leaves 1987-1995 and the newer music out. Besides, from Hurry Up Mode until Aku no Hana their music was still pretty poppy, so this could just be seen as returning to that style.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They started as a synthpop and new wave band (thats very different to pop) they had a bit of industrial sound after that. The fishtank members quit and the majority of their fanbase has broken up. Many fans protested if it was because of their new record label, their last album and this stuff, is being aimed at young teenage girls in Japan. Buck-Tick is now dead!
That's news, considering the LJ group seems fairly lively, and we have plenty of Japanese fans. And besides, are they top of the charts? No. So then why complain? They change styles with remarkable skill. I can see if they were terrible at it, but frankly, they've only gotten better with age in my opinion. Their earlier pop and costuming was ridiculous. Thank gods they don't do that silly shit anymore, because it was frankly embarrassing to see.
I know a Japanese girl who sais those clubs are a form of marketing... Fish tankers are not special. Though I might be joining soon myself depending upon the cost.
O shut the fuck up you whiney little eletist bitch! I know people who like their new stuff and have been to at least one concert, yes, but not all of us can aford to put down one thousand fucking dolars JUST to see a fucking concert! (factoring in plain tickets, hotel, etc.)
I agree the LJ comunities are showing the growth of a new fanbase along with the older members. And there's people asking how to join Fish Tank, how to order concert tickets, and who's best to order merchandise through all the time.
I disagree with you Sokidoningyou about their early music. I love their old work and the outfits were cute sometimes... they have some bad ones nowadays too, you know. I think it's rediculous that you'd call it embarrassing. Show respect!
Their last album was a great work of art. I still don't get why you take issue with it. Um, watching their early lives it looks to me as though their music was always aimed at horny teanage girls. If anything they've cut back on useing sex to sell their music. Their photoshoots lately show every wrinkle and blemish, and there's hardly any fanservice and coy implications about Atsushi and Imai anymore.
Even Imai has called their first album pop, sound-wise. Get over it. I read the interviews people translate. Their first album didn't have much synth and wasn't entirely new wave in sound, was it?
Furthermore Imai's explained pretty clearly that he wants to do a simple fun 'band sound' (meaning no synth etc.) because it's diferent from what they'd been doing. What's wrong with that?
it's the most important thing for the musicians to try to do something new.
And I think their basic style of music is pop. If they continue to consist the same style...I mean, dark and heavy world, we would be very boring. Hey, Locomoco, I don't think it's a good idea to complain to this song all this song's reviews...
If you don't like this song, it's enough to write your opinion only once or twice. Don't you think so??
Honestly I think their first album was pretty poppy sounding... the synth and goth elements came in more around 1990, but still with that youthfull sound wich mainly came from Imai. I think part of the change is Atsushi's voice... it's matured... he can't sing cutesy like in the early stuff, but he can sing in a more powerfull intence voice now like on 13kai.
...I respectfully disagree. Sakurai-san's voice has matured but his range, I don't believe, has altered. I cite Gessekai if I may. The original Gessekai is all deep bluesy crooning, Gessekai live from Devil& Freud is raised almost an octave (falsetto even, in the beginning). Also, the way he handles the drops is masterful. Drops like that are difficult, I have experience and can attest. Domo arigato gozaimasu. ^_^
I don't see how it's wrong for them to write about other things besides sex and relationships. Songs about introspection or reflecting on other aspects of life are good too. And I think it shows that they've grown up a bit. I love their youthfull early stuff, but I see a greater sence of maturity in some of their later stuff. It's realy only natural.
Puhleaze, just because you 'discover' Buck-tick in the late 90s doesn't mean that's the only sound they have. They're CONSTANTLY changing their sound and betraying their fans expectation, it's not like this is the first time. So called old fans who abandoned them eventually come back sometime in future when their new album's sound 'click' with them (I know because I'm one of them). Their last album was awesome Glam Rock stuff, it's good stuff.
