  • Love your videos, they helped a lot.

Do you was your whole car then rinse the soap off or wash one section, rinse, and then do another section? Reason I ask is because I wash my whole car, then rinse it at the end, but by the time I start rinsing, the soap has dried. It that bad? Is it the sopa I use or the amount of sopa I put in a bucket to wash, maybe that I wash in direct sun light? This also happens when I use wet the whole car with a foam gun to begin washing. Or is it normal?

  • @Alax7 Your number one and biggest mistake is washing your car in direct sunlight! That is absolutely the last thing you want to do. If you have to wait until after sunset or get it done BEFORE the crack of dawn, that's what you need to do.

I wash my car INSIDE my garage so I can do it anytime, and I will never experience soap drying on the car. If it started drying, I would wash and rinse it in sections. Letting it dry on the car may or may not create an issue, depending on the brand you use.

  • Junkman, what is your take on not using wax as lube for the clay. The water you just rinsed could be used as a lube saving time and detail spray. Thanks and great videos

  • @emmgsxr Did you mean WATER, not wax? Water is a lousy lube. The clay will stick and hang and eventually cause you to fumble it. That's 20 plus dollars down the drain. Detail spray is an excellent lube because of its slippery properties. And, it cost a heck of a lot less than clay.

Use detail spray. You'll thank me later.

  • @Junkman2000 yea exactly using the water as the wax detail spray. Thanks for the info also what is your opinion on using m105 over meguairs diamond cut. Also with my 7424 should i use meguiars yellow pad or red with these products.. I know it depends on paint but i guess what im really asking is if you come to a rough spot is the red pad safe

  • @emmgsxr I'm not as familiar with the Meguiar's stuff that you're asking about. I think Diamond Cut is made for a rotary only, where M105 can be used on all polishers. If you go to MOL, they will more than be able to help you out.

  • Hey Junkman,

Is it okay to clay a car even if it may feel smooth? In my mind, if im claying one part, id rather clay it all (assuming i have the time) so that its all even.

  • @abukhiyaar It doesn't hurt anything but logically, it makes no sense to clay if the car doesn't need it. The reason is, claying strips all the wax off the car and can possibly cause marring. Thus, you have to completely polish the entire car and then wax the entire car. That's a whole lotta unnecessary work.

  • @Junkman2000 I see your point, but my worry is if i only clay and polish/wax certain parts, the car will come out uneven, no?

  • @abukhiyaar Absolutely not if you treat the clayed panel with the same stuff the other panels consist of. You're definitely over thinking this one, although I can appreciate your passion.

  • @Junkman2000 I see. Okay last question: in the situation where the entire car does need claying, would it be a good idea to do different sections each week so as to break up the time?

  • @abukhiyaar It would be a good idea to only work until fatigue sets in. If that means that you break it up over a couple of days, so be it. Never do more than you can do with the same vigor at which you started. I would never clay an entire car in one day.

  • Would it be beneficial to rinse off the foam before you go to the two bucket wash in order to get rid of any dirt that it lifted from the paint? Or is it better to use the foam as a lubricant even with the dirt it may have in it?

  • @ChiTownBalla19 You could rinse off the first foam application and then reapply it as the foam is best used as a assisting lubricant. You definitely want it on the car.

  • @Junkman2000 Ok, thats what I will do. Thank you for your help and all of your videos.

  • Hello! Thank you for all your video's!

As for the washing, I use a washmit but only for the lower half of the cars. For the top half I use a soft & clean carwashbrush, connected to my water-hose. Idea being that when I touch the paint the dirt does not only get moved, but washes away immediately with the water. You want no way for the soapdirtwater to dry up on the car right?

I also clean it out in a soap&clear water bucket, & check it afterwards for dirt. Is my working a good alternative?

  • @Melvivio I have never seen a brush that didn't scratch the paint so I would need to see exactly what it is that you are using. I have a 2-bucket wash video series that goes into more detail as to what I actually do. You should check it out. This is part of a series that covered my wash process in a lot less detail.

  • @Junkman2000 I've watched the other series :)

The brush I'm using is similar to Hozelock carbrush (google search query)

Only non polyester/nylon but made from horsehair. It's really soft! I always have the idea, that even though using two buckets and two mitts. SOME sand will always stick to the mitt. Or on the car (soap ain't superman) The brush is through flow, and clean water is constantly jetted through the brush bristles, washing away the dirt when you touch the car.

  • @Melvivio No sir, I would not use that. Like I said before, I have never seen a brush that didn't scratch the clear coat on a car. No matter how soft the bristles or hair was, they have still scratched my paint. You must have a very light colored car if you can't see that in your paint. As for stuff getting caught in the mitt, that's why I use the mitts that I use. I never have that issue. Like I said before, check out my new set of 2-bucket wash videos. They are a lot more detailed.

  • @Junkman2000 Thank you! I'll switch asap. My cars are Met. Red & Gloss uni-colour black (oldtimer, no clearcoat). The scratches after washing are minimal. Cars have both been detailed a year ago, although not perfect/spotless. Understood as said, switching to high quality mitts asap, and I'll post on adamsforums/here my experience! Thanks!

  • G'day Junkman2000,

I've got a quick question. I seem to have a problem with water stains on the paint of my car. It's left a discolouration in the paint and it doesn't come out from washing or polishing/waxing (although waxing did remove it a little bit but a fair bit remains ).

Do you have any hints on how I may get rid of them? Thanks in advance.

    Great Videos by the way!

    Cheers,

    Dan (Australia)

  • @nabed4t Exactly what products and equipment did you use to attempt to remove the damage? Also, how experienced are you at correcting paint?

  • @Junkman2000 I washed the car with Chemtech CT18 Car wash and used Mothers Pure Carnauba Wax and AutoGlym Super Resin Polish (will defiantly be getting some Adams Products). The car hasn't been waxed for nearly 2 years so I didn't use a wax remover. I applied the wax/polish using an Orbital/Rotating Polisher, just a cheap one I picked up from Super Cheap Auto, nothing as fancy as the PC. I have no experience in correcting paint, but am willing to learn. Thanks again for your help.

    Dan

  • @nabed4t Okay, the problem is the products you used and the equipment too. That polisher can't put a shine on a Hershey bar. Add to that the products that you are using and you are perfectly setup for a fail-fail.

You don't have to use the products that I use but you have to use a product that is at least as good as what I use. Combine that with what I do in my paint correction videos and you will succeed in correcting your paint. Otherwise, you are wasting your time and money.

  • @Junkman2000 I'm gonna admit I had to google what a hershey bar was!

Ok, so I checked on the Adams website and the Australian re-seller has closed down and to get the swirl and haze remover shipped to Oz it will cost around $100...

Would you have any suggestions on what other products to use that are as good as Adams?

I was under the impression that Mothers was a pretty good product. What about Meguiars?

I think I can probably get a PC off ebay if I have a hunt around.

    Thanks Junkman2000

    Dan

  • @nabed4t I didn't realize that you are in Australia! I would have used another candy bar!

Okay, what you need to get is Meguiar's M105 & M205. Not that over the counter Meguiar's junk, you want the good stuff. Do you have access to those two products? They are as good if not better than what I use.

  • @Junkman2000 I can get my hands on those two products. So thats-

M105 Meguiar's Mirror Glaze Ultra Cut Compound

    and

M205 Meguiar's Mirror Glaze Ultra Finishing Polish

I can get them both off ebay as the Australian Meguiar's Website doesn't have the good stuff. Pretty pricey stuff, looking at over $100 for both. But I suppose you can't put a price on your car looking good!

Would the process of using these be the same as you demonstrated in your videos?

    Dan

  • @nabed4t M105 would be similar to my Swirl & Haze Remover (although M105 is more abrasive), and M205 would be the same as my Fine Machine Polish. I would then follow that up with a Meguiar's wax of you choice as I don't believe in mixing up product brands. Whatever Meguiar's product you choose to use, make sure that it says Mirror Glaze on the front of the bottle. If not, stay away from it.

  • Junkman, How come we don't use polish remover, etc. to further clean the car b4 we use the clay, which I assume can get quite expensive, replacing it as often as you are.

  • @UtzChips2009 Polish does not remain on the car. It is used to correct the paint and then wiped off. Did you mean wax? If so, I did use a wax remover. It was called DAWN.

  • Hey Junkman is it possible to make a white car shine like that vette of yours? I mean that mirror shine where you can see the clouds rollin by in the sky.

I have watched a lot of vids of dark colored cars being done and i have a white car, just wondering if it is possible

  • @slliks67 Yes, it is very possible and the process and products used are no different than what is used on a dark colored car. The products don't care what color the car is, they are going to do what they do regardless. If your technique is solid, then you will see those results.

  • @Junkman2000 Cool I have been watching your vids and have my washing technique down two bucket (no grit guard yet) soon to come tho and i have to claybar, which i have just waiting for the perfect day, now i have to get my PC and some of those unique Adam's products to perfect detailing my cars. Thx for the advice and the Vids

  • @slliks67 Thanks for watching, and don't forget to use my code. That will save you a nice penny.

  • k question big bro why do yo uclay again..? do you clay after you finsh wet sanding it..? again im very new to this and i tell you this man your videos help me out a out a lot. been watchng your videos for the pass few hrs now..lol

  • @MrZiggy1979 You do exactly as you see in my videos. You clay when you see me claying and you check the paint as I do in the videos to see if you need to continue claying. You must get an understanding or what claying does and how to check your work in order to understand when it is necessary.

You should join Adam's Forums so that you can see my claying thread. That will answer all of your claying questions.

  • @MrZiggy1979 You never catch everything the first time through these videos. You need to watch them more than once.

  • 8'24 that's a fail :D

  • @shibbi972 Yep, and that's why I left it in there. :D

  • @shibbi972 that was funny, clay slid right by

  • @slliks67 Don't you hate it when that happens? lol!

  • Grit guard are not properly place, but again i can tell why your screen name is "Junkman2000" lol. If anybody looking for these type of buckets and would like to save money instead of paying $100 contact me on a private message.

  • @nymxcar What do you mean the Grit guards are not properly placed??? And who said the buckets cost a hundred dollars?

  • @nymxcar Looks like Junkman picked himself up a troll! I guess you got bored filming people driving in snow and Chirstmas lights on your car and needed to vent your frustration after your (more than likely) unsuccessful car detail company. Get off it man.

  • @stumblinsteve5000 lol! I guess! He lost me.

  • Shit those are 130 dollar buckets.

  • @xpiecemealx No, the Pad Washer bucket from Grit Guard cost $130. These buckets are only $25 bucks.

  • @Junkman2000 Drop me a link brotha!

  • @xpiecemealx A link too...?

  • @xpiecemealx Where I can find them for that price.

  • @xpiecemealx They sell them on the Adam's Polishes website.

  • what does "marring the finish" mean and is it irriversabke damage?

  • @bobdudle123211

Marring is the damage that clay can do if you use it with not enough lubricant. It is basically a scuff mark, which can easily be removed by polishing the paint.

  • Hi Junkmann2000

For how long do you think one clay bar last ? For one car or ? I know its about how dirty the paint is but - you know what i mean :-)

Iv already leaned a lot from your videos.. Now its time for me to order a Junkerman correction detail kit from Adams :-)

    Regards from Denmark

  • @LN2VIOLN2 You totally answered your own question. It depends big time on how much your paint is contaminated with impurities. There is no way to say. Everyone will have a different experience. I will add your question to my upcoming video series.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Hey AJ, how much soap do you put in your wash bucket? Do you just put it on the bottom and put water over it or do you put it on the pad like Adam does in the Volume 6 videos?

  • @TMAL44 I put water in the bottom of the bucket first and then add about an ounce of soap. I then fill the bucket up the rest of the way.

  • @Junkman2000 Awesome thank you very much!

  • man... adams is some expensive shit... wow, u really pamper ur car... nice job.

  • @whitekid3

When you realize how much product you get for the price of the product, the prices all of a sudden make sense. Most companies don't sell 16oz sizes. Most novices use way to much product.

  • Now I understand the concept to using 2 buckets.

  • Awesome video, really helps teach you how to clay. I clayed my car a couple weeks ago, and had searched around for a video like this. Didn't find one, and I ended up claying it all wrong. Thanks a ton for the help Junkman!

  • @Metroshica

    My pleasure friend.

  • @Junkman2000

So you mean you've already been here? Do you have any plans getting back here again? =) If you do so, I'll insist, I will tour you, I'll be your tour guide=) anyway, Meguiar's are the best so far here in the Philippines as far as auto detailing is concern, can I combine your skills and megiuar's product? is that possible? Is the result going to be the same? Thanks men, your cool!

  • @mijek

I visited for a month in 1985. I swear, it was the best place in the western pacific area that I've been. I always wanted to come back but I haven't been able to do so. I wonder how much it would be to come back now...

I changed my reply to you. It turns out that there are two dealers of Adam's products in the Philippines. Did you see that info?

  • @Junkman2000 Yeah I got it! Thanks, really appreciate it. The fare, if I'm not mistaken ranging for 900-1550USD and that's already a round trip from US to Manila, Philppines.

  • @mijek

Okay, that's doable if I were to save up the funds. That would be my only issue as time is something I have plenty of!

  • @Junkman2000 And when that time comes go and visit again Philippines, It's a bit different now especially Olongapo. Just in case you need to find a hotel or tourist destination where you can enjoy your stay, if ever, I'll help you just give me a ping.=)

  • @mijek

    Will do! *thumbs up*

  • I want to ask how long can I use the clay bar? I agree with youlooz Detail spray is ain't that cheap, can you give some alternative for Detail spray. Thanks

  • @mijek

You use the clay until you cannot flip it and find a clean spot to work with. That's why you want the car as clean as possible before you do any claying. I have heard that some guys use a couple of drops of Dawn dish washing liquid in a bottle of water as a lubricant, however, I have never trued it. Nothing works as well as Detail Spray.

  • @Junkman2000

Junkman I really want to use and buy Adams product co'z you really proved and convinced me that adams product really works, I'm planning to put a car wash and an auto detailing business and I want to use adams product but the problem is do you have a branch or company here in the Philippines? If yes how can I contact them? Thanks.......=) you really did a good job! Salute!

  • @mijek

Wow, the Philippines! Man, I had a blast there. Love that place!

I just checked and YES THEY ARE! Go to the Adam's website and check the top of the banner for dealers. They list two in the Philippines. Automobili Detaglia and ANSAN International Ventures Inc.

  • @Junkman2000 Wow thanks for your help! I'm going to check it and hopefully they have what you have in the video=) I really appreciate men. More Power to you Junk Man=)

  • @Junkman2000 Junkman I really want to use and buy Adams product co'z you really proved and convinced me that adams product really works, I'm planning to put a car wash and an auto detailing business and I want to use adams product but the problem is do you have a branch or company here in the Philippines? • I know detail spray is the best to use when you are clay baring your car but you can go through a lot of detail spray when your doing your whole car and detail spray isnt all the cheap when your using it like that. I seen you said water with some dish soap will work is there anything else that works well as a lubrication when claying.

  • @youlooz13

Honestly, I don't use anything but detail spray. I don't care how much it cost, that's what I will always use. You don't have to clay that often so 2 gallons should last you a long time. It does me.

  • @Junkman2000 Take the Grit Guard with you when shopping for buckets. Not all 5 gallon buckets have the width at the bottom to accept a grit guard. Don't ask me how I know. ;=)

  • @jwma7

That's what you would have read if you had watched these videos where they originate: Adam's Forums.

  • If you ever come to Denmark, please let me know.

I wan't to shake your hand and buy you some beers.

    Thanks Junkman2000!

  • @slobowitz

    Will do mate!

  • FLIP That! haha this is the best.

  • These are great videos thanks!

  • haha 7:18 "You DEFINITELY wana FLIP DAT"...This is by far THE BEST video on Youtube of how to wash and clay your car properly. Dont watch that dumb "Expertvillage" garbage where its a guy with a bucket of soap, a rag, and a camera. You know what your doing, and its 100% right.

  • Thanks Pistol Pete. Years ago when I started, Expert Village was all I had to look at and it looked wrong back then. Now I realize just how bad some of those videos are (wash your car with Formula 409? lol!). That's why I make all these videos. I want to share what I know, and learn from those who watch them and give me their input. Hopefully, I'll make this easier for those who like me back in the day, were totally lost and starving for some good information.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Can you use water for lubrication rather than detail spray?

  • NO. Water alone works like crap and does not act as a lubricant at all. Some folks use water with a couple drops of dish soap in it but nothing works as well as detail spray.

  • thank you very much your videos are really good 200% and another question where can i get a foam gun?

  • Amazon. The company that makes them does a suck ass job at keeping the vendors stocked so it may take awhile to get one now.

  • I've been preaching this for a while... Guys on certain forums claim scratches happen when you dry the car, an talk about using leaf blowers to dry the car vs using towels...

  • I need to visit those forums. Shoot me a email with the links. I'll straighten them out. You can defy logic but it only makes you look foolish.

Tom Slick! Every time I see you from now on, that's what I'm gonna holla!

  • Okay, now I have to take issue with your clay bar technique. I've watched numerous videos that are unanimous in their instructions to use little or no pressure when using the clay. I'm guessing so that you do not scratch the finish with any of the impurities that it picks up.

But you say to "scrub" the finish with the clay. Could you elaborate please?

    Still think you 'da man!

  • What you have heard makes perfectly good sense. However, I WASH the car real good BEFORE I clay. Thus, there should not be any dirt on the car capable of scratching the finish.

I also work inside and do not have airborne contaminants landing on my finish which could also do damage.

Lastly, did you see how much detail spray I was using to keep the area wet? If you allow the area to get just a tad dry, you could mar the paint. I don't allow my area to get even close to dry.

  • Any marks that I leave with the clay can easily be fixed with the first pass of SHR so I don't worry about marring. I will throw the clay away if it hits the floor, just as I did with that piece in the video! lol!

  • Yep...I can see your point (and your results). Next time you're up Raleigh way, let me know and I'll cook up some pulled-pork BBQ !

  • Yee haa! : )

  • never said paint correction,,,detailing cars that were just washed with a shytty car wash hahaha...they suck...wont be there long...got me in an XL shirt, sweating like a slave, sick first day, no lunch and cant work wearing a wet tent, 2nd day I asked nicely for large or medium, was told no and got sick and left, they suck, and u r right...wont learn anything by doing the same b.s. over and over...ty again and I hope the cats are ok...ttyl

  • That sucked!

Like I said, you won't learn anything there!

  • someone told me 2-3 cars an hour which wont be enough unless 40-50 percent of the customers tip and not sparingly...looks like I`ll be putting in applications while I`m starting there and build a little clientel. so to just use their prodsucts, and to do what all I named, and not wax or buff anything, $1.00 a car? $10.00 a car? ty

  • You're talking about working in a drive through car wash. That is nothing on the level of paint correction that I do in these videos. I can't imagine one thing useful that you will learn at a place like that. I don't have a clue what one would charge working there, as I have never done so nor would I frequent an establishment like that. A place like that is like going to Burger King and expecting cloth napkins.

  • 8 hrs a day...not 8 cars an hour...8 would be nice if i could do that fast

  • Oh.

  • and its for bebo`s car wash...

  • pretty much any vehicle that comes through is going to be brand new or in newer condition, the customers are typically people who do not know how to wash or just don`t want to wash their car, they have a hand wax special for like $59.99 but I`m pretty sure we just do engine and engine bay, bottom of hood, wheels, tires, wheel wells, and interior, windows, dash, and the trunk...

  • I will be getting a pro grade stuff a.s.a.p. but I`m pretty sure bebo`s supplies their employeeswith most of what they need...as far as I know (forgot to ask) but pretty sure we just do engine, wheel wells, and interior after it has been through wash and wax. So the way I figured it is about 4-5 maybe 6 cars an hour tops, 8 hrs a day...plus tips...guess I`ll just have to play it by ear...thanks again...those hid`s are awesome

  • Are you talking about working for someone or working for yourself? No business is going to detail cars like I do unless they cater to the rich and famous. Six to eight car an hour? It takes me that long to do 1 fender!

    Who Bebo's?

  • I know it can potentially be a lot of work but I hope and think I found a new passion,,,detailing, but I was wondering what I should have expected to be paid per vehicle b/c I was`nt offered a whole lot but to get into the business I accepted..No idea who else to go to with inquiries..the last person would simply tell me what I had told them and how to fix it which I had done..great vids on headlight restoration, can`t wait to try it out with someMSX thank you for your time Bebo`s in Alabama

  • Meguiar's Scratch X is consumer grade stuff used to mask scratches and imperfections. If you are truly going to get into the business, don't start off cutting corners. If you do, you'll just be another dime a dozen detailer out there in a sea of other scrubs. Get some professional grade detailing equipment and products and do the job right.

I would charge anywhere from $1000 - $1500 a car just to correct the paint and I get it too. But I don't use that consumer grade junk. I do it right.

  • also its what I have so I was saying I cant wait to use it on the 2 older cars that are here and have hazed/scratched headlights...not at work : )

  • looks like Adam puts quite a bit of clay in that tub...also looks more aggressive than my smooth surface kit : ( also I only got two 50 gram bars so I use then in quarters : ) maybe I should use more next clay job...

  • I grab the entire thing and go at it. I don't break it up at all.

  • So what do you think of the Clay Bar "Holders" ? Would that help you avoid getting cramps claying the Whole car in a Day ? The ones I've seen, are made of Urethane Rubber and almost have a Velcro type pad that locks into the Clay. A Clay Bar kit up in Canada, costs about $26-$30... so you don't want to be dropping it on the ground like you did. Your thoughts on the Holder ? And thank you for making these Videos. Your sense of Humor "shines" through your Paint !

  • the lazy man buckets are sweet

  • ... and you can sit on them and work too!

  • What did you use to wash the car?

Looks like a really big wash mitt, nice!

  • That's a Adam's wash mitt. Really holds the soap and won't scratch the car.

  • Wow...talk about taking care of your precious... i bet your wife told u she rather trade place with your car ; )

  • It's the not having a wife which gives me the opportunity to spend this much time on my car. My girlfriend learned that if she helped, she would get to see me more! lol!

  • great video tutorials!

  • Thanks!

  • Quick question junkman what do you do with your wash mitts after you're done do you throw them in the washer?

  • No, I rinse them out and hang them up to dry. Once they are dry, I put them in a big plastic baggy.

  • You mentioned that you have one for the Top Half and another Mitt for the Bottom Half. Do you label them as such ? If you never wash them, then how do you know that each Mitt is good for the next time ? Why do you put the Mitt into a Baggy ? Don't they get all stinky and smelly ?

  • I never wash my mitts because they never get dirty enough to need a washing. They get washed simply by me using them.

I put my mitts in labeled bags to keep them clean and free of dirt.. I don't put them in their bags until they dry out (which they do rather quickly when left in the sun).

  • I have two questions.

    1) When do you know when to stop claying a section? When the surface is completely smooth?

    2) How are you suppose to know when you need to buy a new clay bar? I mean with all the contaminants collecting in the clay bar with each use, how are you suppose to know?

Thanks! Your videos are real informative. I really am amazed how your subscribers list is still fairly low.

  • Question 1: Exactly. The surface will be smooth as wet glass.

Question 2: When you flip the clay and can no longer find clean clay, it is time for a new bar. Also, if you drop the clay on the ground, that clay is finished, end of story.

I guess if I knew how to promote my videos, I would get more subscribers. Oh well, I can't be good at everything!

  • yeah and then junkman convinced me to buy grit guards!! lol so worth it!keeps all the rocks and grit at the bottom!

  • I remember when you were skeptical on the grit guard, glad I got you to be a believer! - Jason

  • I was skeptical? I don't remember that!
