  • Being a bass player in a C of E church band I doubt Mrs Beamish would be my best friend.

  • Mrs Beamish (and thereby Richard Stilgoe) is my hero. Speaking as a 20-year-old who cannot stand happy-clappy muzak, and whose preferred environment is Tridentine-rite Roman Catholicism, with Gregorian chant, robed choirs, organs, bells and incense, I can but share Stilgoe's anti-evangelical sentiments. These hand-wringers are not only not satisfied to allow real music to dominate, but will stop at nothing to destroy our traditions altogether.

  • 4 people are modernist heretics...

  • My church is doing an arrangment with the tune of this song, but diffrent words. It is to commemorate the 10th annaversairy of our modern building

  • I love that so many Mrs Beamishes have supported her views in the comments. Well done guys. Where's the light switch?

  • dont send the police!!! lol

  • A few more like Mrs Beamish, and the C of E wouldn't look like going down the plughole!

  • anyone know where I can get the sheet music for this?

  • I know her! ( not biblically speaking, I don't mean )

  • Mrs Beamish rocks !!

  • i think i am mrs beamish.

  • @blackboysie me too!

  • they played thins in my church on the big screen lol

  • Brilliant! Love it! Oh my gosh.... this is too true for words!

  • Brilliant! Too, true.......

  • Watch the premier episode of "The Vicar of Dibley." This song fits perfectly with the conflict of old and new that is seen in that episode.

  • Hilarious!!!! :-)

  • love it, so funny

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhh this is just so wonderful - dont we all know somebody like this - we love them but they are jUST like this what would we do without them! wondrous tytyty for uploading this

  • She has a point though. Modern-style churches can be over-intrusive.

  • Never heard this before. So glad I have now. Brilliant!

  • Marvellous! God bless!

  • has anyone got the lyrics for this ?

    GREATLY appreciated

  • I think this is taken from the CD Quiet Night In from the final tour of Richard Stilgoe and Peter Skellern.

  • Very Funny Very Good Liked Hyacinth in there aswell. Good Song aswell

  • Wondeful - when did they come to our Church ?

  • Who is the rector in the video? Is he an actor from some British TV show?

  • Hello! Help wanted!! We are in desperate need of the music for Mrs. Beamsley! If you don't have the music, can u pls. help with the chord shifts? We'd like to add it to a skit for next week. Many thanks!

  • Hey Mr Tamborine Man, why so serious!!! Surely 1 lesson all Christians learn is to love thy neighbour, and their differences I would hope that meant. Check out the Decalogue!

  • Then again it does tell you a fair few things Re what not to do without giving guidance as to what good you could be doing?

  • Mrs Beamish is never going to go for the Peavey Amp or mexican wave is she, and what's wrong with that, if you think you have found god, great, though I can't see how it will be found by keeping the stiff upper lip OR by shaking a tamborine at 'him' We aren't meant to idolatrise and I am sure that I heard or read somewhere that if you are to worship it should be in a quiet place? that certainly doesn't involve a large Organ or a High Hat!

I loved the video by the way :-)

  • I agree with everything you say Spinach! The thing is is that Christianity is an evangelical religion and followers believe they must spread the 'word' as loudly as possible! You might want to check out Tim Minchin 'If you think too much your brain will fall out' - tried to post a link but it won't let me do that!

  • Christians are *called* to "love thy neighbour", but most Christians are also human and do not manage to be perfect all at once.

  • My previous comment was in response to MrsMiggins66. Thought it would post as a reply. Anyway, this is hilarious!

  • Ah well, we are all entitled to our opinion, shame some of the comments from Christians aren't very Christian thinking now are they? The last time I went to my local church - which has the most beautiful Victorian interior- it was full of drumkits and Peavey amps. We should be preserving our churches not desecrating them! Sorry, but the happy clappy brigade HAVE ALREADY driven most of us away!!

  • Well, now I can agree that the contemporary worship is not necessarily for me, either, but some flexibility and variety may be needed to bring a new generation to Christ. That being said, I think your references to the "happy clappy brigade" and the idea that modern Christians are a "nest of vipers" might be construed as pretty un-Christian sentiments as well. Bottom line, variety in worship experiences works. Not just my version, or theirs, or yours, but many. God's peace to you.

  • Ahhh, but I don't class myself as a Christian. I was just stating a fact of my experiences and the way that I have seen some Christians behave, I am not passing any judgment on them, I was just trying to point out the judgments that were being made about Mrs Beamish and her friends. Peace and love to you but please don't hug me! ;)

  • dudes mine isnt as good this one but look my mrs beemish :D

    oh and PEACE OUT :D

  • I am a CofE priest and I too know several Mrs. Beamishes. They are faithful members of the congregation even if I wish they could enjoy our more modern services they are as valued as those who do. The video did have me in stitches.

  • As an Anglican priest, I really enjoyed this, and agree with teh person who hinted it soulded like a 'Flanders and Swan' rendition - even their voices sound the same. We do have 'The Peace' in our church here in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and I am aware of the 'Mrs Beamishes', and I respect their 'hands off' attitude - I just smile at them and greet them. As Christians, we need to accept people's differences, and boy, we do enjoy laughter and joy. Praise God!

  • best line -

"one false step in my direction,

you'll need to believe in the resurection"

the rest of the song is also helarious.

  • Great stuff, made my day!

  • Brilliant!

  • Excellent! So true to form!

  • im a 12 year old church goer, and my dads a vicar, and we love it tbh. just except the way times change, and except that kids do like to laugh, otherwise there will be no church left at the end, cause the mrs beamish's wont let us in! loved it, favorite video on here :D

actually made me lol actually :L

    x

  • I'm with Mrs Beamish on this one. If it weren't for the likes of the Mrs Beemish's there probably wouldn't be any churches left for you all to go to! Speaking as an ex practising Christian, most Christian fellowships that I have attended are all very nice on the surface but a nest of vipers underneath! And some of the comments about the likes of Mrs Beamish just confirm that! Shame on you.

  • You must be daft like the fictitous but true to life Mrs. B. If the church is left to the likes of her, THAT will be the end of the church. Nothing about that behaviour will do anything other than drive people away. Wake up and smell the coffee hour!

  • Love it - hahahahaha - I used to be a church organist and have seen all this stuff.....hilarious.

  • If you want to see faith stories and no Mrs. Beamishes try the internet TV for Monmouthshire. Go to MONTV on internet then hit on Mon Faith. Some really good short faith programmes.

  • The comments are far funnier than the video.

  • Lols this was mega

  • Priceless!

  • As vicar of an Anglican Parish....we all have a Mrs. Beamish or even two or three.

    They keep us humble!

  • This is a hoot.....loved it....

And it is good therapy to laugh at yourself.

  • Brilliant!!

  • Was this originally a Flanders & Swan song? It certainly sounds like it!

  • This is so true! I loved it and I have sent it to every Anglican priest I know! They loved it to!!!

  • The "kiss of peace" was quite common in the pre-reformation church, but was banned as being "popish", together with chancel altars, candles, vestments, crosses & incense. Many of these are now coming back, even in "low" churches. I've nothing against "the peace", but the limp-wristed, politician style, robotic "God-bless-you" is false & off-putting. If they want popery in again by the back door, try saying "pax vobiscum" to the vicar, that will confuse the socks off 'em! :-)

  • Okay ... people are taking this video/song way, way too seriously. It's scriptural to laugh, ya know! :)

  • You are so right. Sometimes we are allowed to laugh at ourselves. It made me giggle.

  • I love whoever created this song! It brought a smile to the faces of our worship group!

  • It's Richard Stilgoe and Peter Skellern

  • I think that some of you who "disapprove" of certain liturgical and/or musical styles had better stay home. Congregations have an "annoying " habit of reflecting the tastes and predilictions of their members, despite what the "rule keepers" may say. And so it SHOULD be. If you dislike what's happening in church, why should you bring everyone else down with your sour opinion? There are surely some who wouldn't set foot in the place if suddenly it became solemn and unfriendly.

  • Solemnity isn't the same thing as "unfreindly." Quite frankly I think that the assertion that "sloppy" is the same as "authentic" and that the Church serves no other purpose than to make people feel good are both dangerious assertions.

  • You assume a lot. Obviously since I listed "solemn" and "unfriendly" as two separate things, I am aware that they are not the same thing. Nowhere did I even mention the words sloppy or authentic, nor have I asserted that church exists only to make people feel good. Deal with your own prejudices please and don't make assumptions about others'.

  • Very funny, however very true.

Its time for a reality check if the CoE are going to reach their communities with the Good News of the Kingdom of God

  • Loving the comments as much as the clip. Absolutely hilarious, clever and in my opinion some real life commentary. I agree about CofE being in transition and think they always will be and there will always be those at either end of the trad and modern scale. Let's try christian charity and allow everyone their own opinions (including how to spread the peace!)

  • I don't mind a bow and and exchange of peace, but everyone running around from one end of the church to the other is another matter entirely. For one thing, it ends up with some people getting greeted more often and more enthusiastically than others; we're supposed to be all equal before God--church should be somewhere that the distinction between the cool/popular kids and the nerds/geeks is laid aside.

  • Exactly. Save it for coffee hour, for crying out loud!

  • Best laugh I've had in ages. I know a few Mrs Beamishes. More to the point, we as the C of E are in transition and the flambouyant passing of the peace of Christ is a part of it. After all, Jesus set the example (So let's be rid of the Frozen Chosen)

  • St. Paul commands that all things in church be done 'decently and in order.'

A lot of what I see at the Peace is hardly 'in order', and some of it is hardly decent.

The best music is the best theology. Bach, Brahms, Gibbons, Attwood, Bairstow, Stanford, Vaughn Williams, Britten, Sowerby, Willan---not Peter Paul & Mary with sacred lyrics.

  • hmmm.....yes hugging people or shaking hands is obviously grossly inappropriate, perhaps a good old stoning would be more appropriate....idiot

  • Dear Crowhurstian, Ok, some of the respondents to this posting might have been over-the-top in their descriptions of their favourite style of worship or Church music. That's no reason to be abusive

  • Um, people. I think this is making fun of Mrs. Beamish. And by extension, you.

Pass the peace, and hurrah Episcopalians (and the C of E)

  • Superb. The Anglican Communion could do with a lot less of all these public displays of affection. Heaven only knows what it might lead to: I've even heard reports of some bishops encouraging same-sex marriages!

  • Priceless :)

  • I'm with Mrs Beamish; the Peace is ridiculous.

  • Why? If you're supposed to be a family - and you're supposed to be at peace with others before receiving the Eucharist - why NOT give the peace to your neighbors in church?

  • I don't think a handshake is a reliable indicator of whether or not you are at peace with your neighbor. And if it were only a handshake with your immediate neighbors, it would be much less objectionable : when the congregation spills out into the aisles, hugging and chatting with everyone in sight, it disrupts and derails the Mass.

  • indeed as i'm sure Jesus would shoot you on sight for hugging another human being, damn all the heathens and your fellowship!

you are so deluded its unreal....do you honestly think that God gives a toss one way or another HOW you show a sign of peace? or if it takes a couple of minutes longer before you drink your watered down wine? get a grip

  • Of course, crowhurstian, the entire point of the liturgy is to pat ourselves on the back for being "God's people". Why else would anyone darken the doorstep of a church, after all? Certainly not because we're sinful human beings in need of God's mercy. In fact, let's have Canon Synthesizer strike up another chorus of "Shine Jesus Shine" and don't spare the tambourines!

  • Definitely true of TEC here in the States!

  • Excellent. The truth is always funniest.

  • Very funny, I've met lots of Mrs Beamish's

  • Just sent this to all my cousins in England and my friends at church here in America.

  • Love it!

  • the best tonic I've had in years !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ""Lovely""

    ""Relevant""

  • lolol

  • fantastic as it was sent to me by a dear friend who is a Priest. I have sent it on to other friends fab.

  • This is really cute. I'm young, but I can kind of relate to Mrs. Beamish. "Insulin Church" is annoying!

  • Marvellous! But we're not really like that.

  • Anyone know if it's possible to get the sheet music of this?

  • Wonderful! As an Anglo-Catholic in the States, I really enjoyed it--even sent it to my rector...

  • Hehe funny! ^^ And Mrs Bucket fits perfectly to that description.

  • Brilliant!
