That is not to say Nirvana wasn't isn't without their merit in terms or revolutionizing Alternative music (I hate that term for music), but The Pumpkins were way better musically. And the direction Billy went in the later part of the 90s definitely influence "Alternative" music to come. I remember listening to Siamese Dream and Gish in the early 90s as a teen more than Nevermind or In Utero.
