@Phazym It allows javelines to go after air targets, stops flares from a plane and makes it so javeline hits land vehicles from the top not side so you can hit even if you cant see honestly its kinda pointless

@Phazym the stinger is heat seeking. The javelin's target is the laser (soflam) While flares can shrug off a heat seeking missile, they do nothing for a laser designated rocket.

yea i agree with Timbermaw60 you got to keep that on the target because whoever is trying to shoot at it still has to lock onto what is bein designated, 2 seconds isnt enough. i had a few recon guys doing that one day where they would just LD it for a few seconds and right when i was about to get my lock they started looking at s diffrent vehicles after about 5 times i gave up and just when on my own javelin spree

Fully understand the usefulness of SOFLAM, but I thought the SOFLAM was the same gadget from Bad Company 2 where the Recon individual would send a missile strike at the target. I was kind of disappointed because it did not perform this strike when I first tried it out, and the fact that alot of BF3 players do not communicate, or use on screen indicators due to their idiocy and not playing the game correctly. It is totally useless like you said if your teammates are not truly TEAMMATES.

@boneknocker. IR Flares dont protect your vehicle against laser guided missiles. For example if someone uses the SOFLAM and designates your Jet/heli and then someone fires a javelin at you the Flares dont do anything you will still be hit. Flares only stop heat seekers, ECM jammer stops Laser guided missiles and heat seekers, but only for a period of time. ;)

unlike dart gun in bfbc2 that allow common rpg to run after what it sticking with. it require javelin that for me i think it too much.

compare with how fast all vehicles like tank and jet can receive flare, smoke or even stealth that make common lock on rocket nearly useless.

I think one of the reasons people don't use this (aside from people not knowing how to use it, or what it's for) is the sheer lack of points. You get no assist points in the destruction of air-based vehicles, and only 80~ on ground-based vehicles. I use it myself, but getting an average 10 points is worthless. I get almost 20 times that on average when I snipe.

Great vid you should also mentioin that a javelin CAN hit a soflam marked air vehicle adn it is way more effective on ground vehicles that have been lit. When using a jav on a painted vehicle you will see the missile do the go up and strike down that we all love so much, if the target isnt painted it wont have the same effect. Gr8 piece of kit especially if your in a squad that worx well 2gether. 1 eng, 1 scout, 1 supp and 1 med spot shoot supply revive baby >8D

In the air or in a tank the soflam is a big bright red dot, its weak as shit, no one uses javelins (they all use stingers which are useless these days) javelins need a buff to get people to use it, and the red dot needs to be less visable.

I always have the soflam equipped.It is pretty damn useless.

The JAV does too little damage and misses half the time. The laser itself is so damn visible. Also once you lock onto something, you have to hold it (something the video uploader doesn't say), which means that if they go into cover then they are fine. It sucks.

The SOFLAM is a good way of keeping out vehicles in a small area, when they hear that beeping their first instinct is to deploy smoke, of which it will already be locked on, disclosing the location of it even more.

EA should've made it so there's an AC130 or a jet way up in air above everything that shoots rockets at the vehicles, that way it can shoot down jets and choppers just as easy. It should be a jet, like in the Goin Hunting mission

To be honest they are much better than the Javelin - the Javelin travels too slow to be any good against aircraft and often misses, and it isn't much good against moving targets either (when in conjunction with SOFLAM using top-down attack mode). I don't know if it's a balancing decision by DICE that this happens or if it's actually buggy and will be fixed. But my experience using the Javelin with the SOFLAM wasn't great.

To answer your question, I believe all things lose their spotted and laser designations after a short time. The stealth vehicle perk makes it fall off even faster, and makes them take longer to acquire.

Hey d0dn7bl1nk, please correct me if I'm wrong but i think that you're supposed to keep the vehicle locked on and on target for more time so that someone actually sees that it's locked on and do something about it. The few times that i have used it, i kept on looking at a certain vehicle for a little longer than you do on this video and it actually worked. You just need to give the laser guided missile guys some time to actually spot the vehicle that you are looking at.

Yes, smokes and flares don't stop missiles that are laser-guided, since the missiles are locked onto the laser and not the heat signature.

What bugs me is that I have to unlock flares for planes. Missiles I can sort of understand otherwise everybody would blow eachother out of the sky but flares are needed to deflect the barrage of stinger missiles I encounter while in a jet or helicopter.

@iantend0 The Javelin for the engineer, the "Guided Shell" for the tanks and the "Guided Missile" for the light tanks, helicopters and jets. The "Laser Painter" for the helicopters or the "CITV Station" for the tanks can also laser designate targets by the way.

Obviously, the team-based gameplay of all Battlefield games - and this one in particular - can make it difficult for someone not in either a clan or squad of friends over comms to get the most out of the game. Having said that, when I've told my team through chat at the start of a pub round what I'd like to do and if anyone would like to help out that way, about a third of the time or more someone speaks up. Makes the game that more fun.

Engineers can use Javelins on undesignated targets. But it's limited to direct-fire, and it can only lock onto ground vehicles. The Javelin can lock onto designated helicopters, and when locked onto any designated target, it will switch to top-attack mode.

@TheBritzius I got my Javelin ready and I'm waiting for people to actually use the SOFLAM. Sadly I have only once seen someone use it and that was before I had the Javelin. I hate that DICE makes the game depend even more on teamplay. Sorry, but I don't plan on playing Battlefield 3 in some coordinated clan. They wanted to "lower the barrier" and make it more "publicly playable". What the fuck is this shit? Now they put in a Javelin and it's a piece of crap without voicechat.

If you hate that they made the game more teamplay-oriented then it seems like we have very different opinions on games. Perhaps BF games are not for you...
