@Geoxile I would assume you have given this matter some thought yes? Gundarium is such a lovely material that is proven to fail, time and time again, personally i don't think the main camera could take a few hundred hits from the gouf's mounted cannon, but this honestly moot. Norris did what he did and he died for it, i honestly think if he had decided to just gun down the gundam and use the spark plug on it and just hack it ribbons he would have been quite sucessful in doing so.

There are only a few occasions were kinetic weapons have damaged it and at best it includes things like the massive Grabro's claws. Even in 08th the joints are the only real weakness, which is . Karen's Gundam head is taken off at the neck and Sander's Gundam's knee joint is damaged by cannon fire.

The heatsaber isn't even active, plus you assume Shiro won't parry or block even though he showed himself capable of following Norris's melee

Let me put it this way, a GM made of titanium could go down in a single hit from the 120mm Zaku MG, a Gundam made of Gundarium (luna titanium) wouldn't even flinch

The Gouf's hand cannon is only 35mm, one of the smallest caliburs for MS weaponry in all of UC. A beam saber would easily overpower an unactivated heat saber. The RX-78-2 was only damaged by heat weapons, beam weapons, and the grabbro's claw. The MS in 08th have shown some odd joint problems but even then the Gundams and G GMs are tough
@Geoxile I give norris credit where credit is due he took a standard off the line mobile suit and it had slightly modified for more scouting and light duty assignments and used it as a effective asault weapon, and besides the terrian favors him more, i mean in a honest fight between shiro and norris with no emotional entanglment what so ever on the same ground they did fight? i cannot see shiro winning except by some fluke or with assistance.

In all honesty, Norris gets lucky a number of times. Like inadvertently dodging a beam because he was going to rappel. Shiro's only fault in the fight was trying to use machine guns at melee range after the Gouf closed in, he's an otherwise competent pilot, just an incompetent soldier.

Norris basically took the fall, futilely since the GM sniper destroy the shuttle and attack the apsalus as well. I doubt many aces could, most "Aces" were known for their deeds in space. Plus norris isn't even one of the top Zeek aces IIRC,for who there are some very low kill counts

Thats why i view this battle as a series of bad luck, bad timing and just producers wanting the "good guys" to win, Norris was skilled, compitent and had a decent machine and even against the odds he ddi not falter, he got a crummy death but its set in stone now.

Gundarium can shrug off most conventional weaponry including the Gouf Custom's measly arm mounted autocannon weaponry including high explosives, smaller rounds, and cannon rounds. People seem to forget that despite the paltry showings of the EZ8 and Ground Gundams, they were in fact Gundams in more than name. They were made from Gundarium and other left over parts of the V Project.
If if only that norris didn't have care about destroying the guntank and aim only on the three gundam then he would have won that match or so WHY DIDN'T YOU RECHARGE your gouf energy before heading out sigh if only he did had to do this mission then at least he might have live or he could just destroy those three guntank and ran away cause i hear that Norris actual have a space type gouf in that shuttle which got destroy by the sniper gm

I think it's the pilot. A good pilot can use a crappy mobile suit to it's full potential. Look at the beginning of 8th MS team. Shiro took on that Zaku custom with just a Ball. Deffinately about the pilot.. but Norris was wicked.
Honour sworn till the end, He did'nt stand idle when zeon lifes were at stake, nor did he fail his task.
His only weakness was his devotion to those he loved, for he could have easily killed Shiro but recognising him for Anias lover he let him live, in the end that cost him his life.
@hazzard1983 Heavy Arms would still get his ass kicked especially in close combat because the Gouf Custom is a faster, more agile, mobile suit. Norris has more experience than Trowa. Heavy Arms' advantage of have lots of big guns is his fatal flaw; they slow him down, and it's even worse for the Heavy Arms Custom from Endless Waltz. With all those guns you need accuracy and accuracy takes speed.

Norris has too much pride in the machine to ruin its tech with smoke, Oddly enough that never changes if you look at it, Even in the Alt universes of gundam that shit still gets smoke damaged. Although if norris had survived Zeon might well have gone on to at least survive the war if not win it, But this is like what if hitler had approved Werewolf and gone all terrorist rogue state after the war.
In all the Gundam series, there is no pilot that pilots his MS as professionally as Norris Packard. Put any other pilot against him in a comparable MS and he would probably wipe the floor with them. Amuro, Char, Kamille, Heero, Kira, they've all got nothing on Packard.
A brilliant pilot for a brilliant machine. I always loved the gouf for its form and grace, it seemed more powerful and up to par to main character gundams then anything out there. I loved this part of the series too, I was like holy fucking christ when norris finally went down. I loved the character personally just a bad ass soldier
He died that day because he dropped his guard after finding out that was Aina's lover. I'm sorry, but that's not how it would have happened otherwise. The story would have been done right there, because the main character, and possibly the whole 08th MS team, would have been taken out right there; Norris Packard is nothing less than an Ace, they're all just typical soldiers. Numbers don't matter, Zeon is always out numbered. Sieg Zeon!!!
@scruffydog8 Yes, he would have much better armor. Actually, the armor difference would be gigantic, as would the fire-power difference seeing that the Heavyarms packs maybe three times as much weaponry around with it's basic load than the Gouf Custom. BUT! The largest deciding factor is skill of the pilot, I mean Troa, or how ever you spell his name, is a great pilot; but Norris Packard is one of the best. Troa would need luck to win, Packard would take him out quick.
@WulfProject That is really not an easy call to make. While the Gouf Custom is an incredible mobile suit, designed for close range engagements and it's pretty damn fast, the Heavyarms has superior armor, and has the advantage of having missiles, while the Gouf Custom has the heat rod, heat saber, gatling gun, and 3 barrel machine gun, and a bigger shield, but look what it took to inflict damage on the Ez8. Much as I love Norris and the Gouf, I'm pretty sure the Heavyarms would win.
@LightningCount I would put my money on the gouf as it could probably easily dominate the battle field and make trowa use up more and more of his ammunation in a ghoose chase that would end in close combat and in which the gouf custom excells at It was designed off the normal gouf chassis for scouting and high intensity field missions in combat heavy areas and while the Gundam has the advantage in firepower and armor as it has been proven in history time and time again firepower is not everyhing
@akatsukifanboy102 The problem with that is: Trowa is still pretty capable in a melee fight. He may not have a heat sword, but that little knife he has is just as useful in his hands as that heat sword is. Finally, take into account that Gundanium alloy is so much more durable than the Luna Titanium of the Gouf Custom. Remember that Trowa has not only his hand gatling gun/shield combo, but he also has chest gatling guns, and head vulcans, plus all the missiles. He's got enough ammo to waste.
@LightningCount I recall several times in gundam wing when he ran out of ammunation and was a sitting duck and in a city scape battle field i think Norris just being in my opinion a better pilot could sucessfully wear down a heavy arms type gundam and eventually ding it up enough to make it unoperable. while the gouf does not have many heavy weapons i think it would still be enough to go through the armor and defeat it. espeically if as i said norris made trowa use up all of his ammunation
@LightningCount :/ i would not hold my breath either as the tech between the two is miles apart. but if you recall a zaku mark 2 defeated the alex gundam with cunning and skill so some times superior just wins the day and i think we all can agree norris has trowa beat in the skill department
@WulfProject the only problem would be the gundanium armor heavyarms has, i prefer the U.C. mobile suits for their realism, but gouf couldn't do much damage to heavyarms. of course then again he may be able to wear the suit down. norris manuevered better than trowa.
@MrDeadzaku You do realize he died basically for his daughter's (step daughter) happiness, I mean he was fighting her lover at the end. And while he easily could have tore the gundam apart with heavy chain gun fire, as his arm cannon still did in fact have rounds in it. He still wanted his daughter to be happy, but he was also commited to the mission so he decided to basically kill himself completing it. He was a honorable, loving man. A fine pilot and a respectable addition to Zeon.

@konmanreviews Heavy arms or Heavy Arms Kai? Kai would destroy anything in No Name's (Trowa's) path including Norris or Gouf ignited Custom. Heavy Arms would have a good chance at beating just about any Gouf as well, but I do not wish to undestimate pilots like Norris.
While Norris was indeed one of the better Ace Pilots, and he did stick to the mission, I can see why he wouldn't destroy a gundam when there were other gundams in the area - It would only cause them to attack at once. Having been outnumbered, Norris did exceptionally well, even completing his mission. Throwing away his weapons like he did was a major flaw in his plan, and he would have been able to survive had he kept his weapons on him at all time.
Why his heat sword was turned OFF? Lack of energy or some kind of malfunction? If it was turned ON it would slice enemies like hot knife slice butter (literally).
If you think that MS-07B3 Gouf Custom is Badass, look for MS-07F Gouf Hunter, made for CQC and Guerrilla warfare.
One thing i don't get Norris... You see, he is definitely a real badass... when he was in the gouf custom he always plan ahead of his actions. He didn't waste his moves that leads to unnecessary outcome which is not what his mission intended.
However, try and watch episode 3 when he fought shiro in the zaku He is a bit rushing and outsmart by Shiro. I mean he is an ace he supposed to act like in his Gouf. He look like a total different character in episode 3. I cant think of anything possible
Nevermind my previous post.Norris is still the badass Zeon Captain we know & love. After a lot of time rewatching chapter 3 I think I understand his reasoning. In the beginning he did mentioned losing 2 Zakus is a lot of wastage. And after knowing the guerrilla & ms team joining force he order his troops to withdraw while him buy time for them to escape. So within that short time he must delay Shiro while protect the zaku in which he succeed(protected his own Zaku & decrease casualty)
He didn't destroy Shiro because it is time consuming as it is a Gundam and will results in the other forces to arrive to aid Shiro which will result in him losing his own Zaku that is why he keep punching the head to destroy the sensor and camera instead of destroying it.

ya this always made me question in wonder. because in i recall in the video game gundam uc and zeonic front you can turn the saber on and off. the only logical reason that i could think of is that in anime it was said before the battle the zeon mechanic said there is not a much ammunition left. it could be assumed that the gouf was low on "power" and could not power up the saber....image if it was powered up :P he would have won
I made the Gouf Custom on Armored Core for Answer and I pwn with it. It got everything looking accurate except the head of course. AC head is just a Cube like head with one eye and a guard in front of the mouth. But I got the Gattling Gun and sword just no shield cuz AC doesn't have shields.

@WulfProject True i would take Norris over Heine any day, Although they were both skilled pilots who got killed in bull shitty ways. But still you have to respect them both because they were just owning machine's in their gouf. Although i find Heinie's gouf a bit more fancy then need be, and that is why his machine fucked up at the last second and got him killed. His plasma vulcan's overheated when they got servered and fucked with his radar system making him relay on the prox warning.

@Geoxile However apparently the rx is so simple just removing and replacing the motherboard fixes it, And i have no doubt that if the rest of shiro's squad had not arrived when they did, shiro would have died, that is just a fact . Thats why i view this battle as a series of bad luck, bad timing and just producers wanting the "good guys" to win, Norris was skilled, compitent and had a decent machine and even against the odds he ddi not falter, he got a crummy death but its set in stone now.

Top rated comment is over a year old but it's dead wrong. Gundarium can shrug off most conventional weaponry including the Gouf Custom's measly arm mounted autocannon weaponry including high explosives, smaller rounds, and cannon rounds. People seem to forget that despite the paltry showings of the EZ8 and Ground Gundams, they were in fact Gundams in more than name. They were made from Gundarium and other left over parts of the V Project.

I think it's the pilot. A good pilot can use a crappy mobile suit to it's full potential. Look at the beginning of 8th MS team. Shiro took on that Zaku custom with just a Ball. Deffinately about the pilot.. but Norris was wicked.

His only weakness was his devotion to those he loved, for he could have easily killed Shiro but recognising him for Anias lover he let him live, in the end that cost him his life.

@hazzard1983 Heavy Arms would still get his ass kicked especially in close combat because the Gouf Custom is a faster, more agile, mobile suit. Norris has more experience than Trowa. Heavy Arms' advantage of have lots of big guns is his fatal flaw; they slow him down, and it's even worse for the Heavy Arms Custom from Endless Waltz. With all those guns you need accuracy and accuracy takes speed.

@fatherpladin09 I disagree with one thing you said, Other then the cigar remark hell yeah. Norris has too much pride in the machine to ruin its tech with smoke, Oddly enough that never changes if you look at it, Even in the Alt universes of gundam that shit still gets smoke damaged. Although if norris had survived Zeon might well have gone on to at least survive the war if not win it, But this is like what if hitler had approved Werewolf and gone all terrorist rogue state after the war.

In all the Gundam series, there is no pilot that pilots his MS as professionally as Norris Packard. Put any other pilot against him in a comparable MS and he would probably wipe the floor with them. Amuro, Char, Kamille, Heero, Kira, they've all got nothing on Packard.

A brilliant pilot for a brilliant machine. I always loved the gouf for its form and grace, it seemed more powerful and up to par to main character gundams then anything out there. I loved this part of the series too, I was like holy fucking christ when norris finally went down. I loved the character personally just a bad ass soldier

He died that day because he dropped his guard after finding out that was Aina's lover. I'm sorry, but that's not how it would have happened otherwise. The story would have been done right there, because the main character, and possibly the whole 08th MS team, would have been taken out right there; Norris Packard is nothing less than an Ace, they're all just typical soldiers. Numbers don't matter, Zeon is always out numbered. Sieg Zeon!!!

Actually, the armor difference would be gigantic, as would the fire-power difference seeing that the Heavyarms packs maybe three times as much weaponry around with it's basic load than the Gouf Custom. BUT! The largest deciding factor is skill of the pilot, I mean Troa, or how ever you spell his name, is a great pilot; but Norris Packard is one of the best. Troa would need luck to win, Packard would take him out quick.

On top of that, he Gouf weighs at least 10 times more than the Heavyarms 7.7 metric tons vs. the Gouf Custom's 77.6 when fully armed)
Yet Norris still pilots it with such great speed and agility. Even the bridge section the Gouf flipped over is heavier than the Heavyarms.
With that in mind, imagine how hard the Gouf Custom can hit the Heavyarms, let alone use its weapons.

The only thing scarier than a Gouf custom is the Gundam UNIT 2, assuming its ready to launch its nuke.
On the ground the Gouf custom and the DOM are easily my favorites.

@WulfProject That is really not an easy call to make. While the Gouf Custom is an incredible mobile suit, designed for close range engagements and it's pretty damn fast, the Heavyarms has superior armor, and has the advantage of having missiles, while the Gouf Custom has the heat rod, heat saber, gatling gun, and 3 barrel machine gun, and a bigger shield, but look what it took to inflict damage on the Ez8. Much as I love Norris and the Gouf, I'm pretty sure the Heavyarms would win.

@LightningCount I would put my money on the gouf as it could probably easily dominate the battle field and make trowa use up more and more of his ammunation in a ghoose chase that would end in close combat and in which the gouf custom excells at It was designed off the normal gouf chassis for scouting and high intensity field missions in combat heavy areas and while the Gundam has the advantage in firepower and armor as it has been proven in history time and time again firepower is not everyhing

@akatsukifanboy102 The problem with that is: Trowa is still pretty capable in a melee fight. He may not have a heat sword, but that little knife he has is just as useful in his hands as that heat sword is. Finally, take into account that Gundanium alloy is so much more durable than the Luna Titanium of the Gouf Custom. Remember that Trowa has not only his hand gatling gun/shield combo, but he also has chest gatling guns, and head vulcans, plus all the missiles. He's got enough ammo to waste.

@LightningCount I recall several times in gundam wing when he ran out of ammunation and was a sitting duck and in a city scape battle field i think Norris just being in my opinion a better pilot could sucessfully wear down a heavy arms type gundam and eventually ding it up enough to make it unoperable. while the gouf does not have many heavy weapons i think it would still be enough to go through the armor and defeat it. espeically if as i said norris made trowa use up all of his ammunation

@MrDeadzaku You do realize he died basically for his daughter's (step daughter) happiness, I mean he was fighting her lover at the end. And while he easily could have tore the gundam apart with heavy chain gun fire, as his arm cannon still did in fact have rounds in it. He still wanted his daughter to be happy, but he was also commited to the mission so he decided to basically kill himself completing it. He was a honorable, loving man. A fine pilot and a respectable addition to Zeon.

While Norris was indeed one of the better Ace Pilots, and he did stick to the mission, I can see why he wouldn't destroy a gundam when there were other gundams in the area - It would only cause them to attack at once. Having been outnumbered, Norris did exceptionally well, even completing his mission. Throwing away his weapons like he did was a major flaw in his plan, and he would have been able to survive had he kept his weapons on him at all time.

Why his heat sword was turned OFF? Lack of energy or some kind of malfunction? If it was turned ON it would slice enemies like hot knife slice butter (literally).
If you think that MS-07B3 Gouf Custom is Badass, look for MS-07F Gouf Hunter, made for CQC and Guerrilla warfare.

One thing i don't get Norris... You see, he is definitely a real badass... when he was in the gouf custom he always plan ahead of his actions. He didn't waste his moves that leads to unnecessary outcome which is not what his mission intended.
However, try and watch episode 3 when he fought shiro in the zaku He is a bit rushing and outsmart by Shiro. I mean he is an ace he supposed to act like in his Gouf. He look like a total different character in episode 3. I cant think of anything possible

Nevermind my previous post.Norris is still the badass Zeon Captain we know & love. After a lot of time rewatching chapter 3 I think I understand his reasoning. In the beginning he did mentioned losing 2 Zakus is a lot of wastage. And after knowing the guerrilla & ms team joining force he order his troops to withdraw while him buy time for them to escape. So within that short time he must delay Shiro while protect the zaku in which he succeed(protected his own Zaku & decrease casualty)

He didn't destroy Shiro because it is time consuming as it is a Gundam and will results in the other forces to arrive to aid Shiro which will result in him losing his own Zaku that is why he keep punching the head to destroy the sensor and camera instead of destroying it.

ya this always made me question in wonder. because in i recall in the video game gundam uc and zeonic front you can turn the saber on and off. the only logical reason that i could think of is that in anime it was said before the battle the zeon mechanic said there is not a much ammunition left. it could be assumed that the gouf was low on "power" and could not power up the saber....image if it was powered up :P he would have won

I made the Gouf Custom on Armored Core for Answer and I pwn with it. It got everything looking accurate except the head of course. AC head is just a Cube like head with one eye and a guard in front of the mouth. But I got the Gattling Gun and sword just no shield cuz AC doesn't have shields.

The problem with that idea is that by UC 0079 humans would have used up most if not all of the worlds oil, i dont think there would be enough to run every guntank on

@WulfProject True i would take Norris over Heine any day, Although they were both skilled pilots who got killed in bull shitty ways. But still you have to respect them both because they were just owning machine's in their gouf. Although i find Heinie's gouf a bit more fancy then need be, and that is why his machine fucked up at the last second and got him killed. His plasma vulcan's overheated when they got servered and fucked with his radar system making him relay on the prox warning.
