I used to love riding the Skyway. I was so sad when they took it out. Oh well, at least I could still go on the submari... wtf???!!! The Magic Kingdom has changed and, sadly, not for the better.
EVERYONE!!! This is the reason why it was shut down! A worker died fixing the ride so they closed it. I think what happened was he was at the top of one of the towers fixing something when he fell. He fell right in front of "It's a small world." It wasn't closed because of wheelchair problems or staff problems, It was because a worker died.
@TheCrazyCoasterKid This is not the reason the attraction was closed... This attraction was not ADA accessible and since WDW wants all guests to be able to experience as many attractions as possible it was not deemed a attraction that should maintain in the parks. It was also a huge liability to have for insurance purposes. People throw items, Spit from the attraction and this is part of what Disney considered too much of a distraction and Liability.
@MusclemechanicOrl I've heard and read tons of different reasons why this ride was closed. I wish someone from Disney that KNOWS why, not thinks why, it was closed could tell us.
@TheCrazyCoasterKid I am telling you why it closed... My partner is in Upper Management at the park and has been there for MANY years... Sky way is a HUGE safety issue... They had tons of issues with it, its not ADA friendly, it all added together... This is why they removed it....
@MusclemechanicOrl Oh, Thanks. I didn't say that i didn't believe you, I was just saying I wanted to know the exact reason from someone like a castmember because I've heard many reasons why it closed. I didn't know you knew someone in Upper Management that knew why it closed. Thank you for letting me know why it did and your reason made sense.
I miss that ride. Rode it when I was a kid back in the 70's but I hit an age where Disney didn't interest me so off I went to do other stuff. By the time I returned to Disney the Skyway was gone and so was 20K under the sea. Don't miss 20K all I remember was being trapped in that sub with some people who spoke Spanish and didn't believe in deodorant, Do remember going over the cars and their smell along with the smell of cigarettes etc. Also the ride was a little scary for me at the time.
@givepropstotherich They didn't, a worker died fixing the ride so they closed it. I think what happened was he was at the top of one of the towers fixing something when he fell. He fell right in front of "It's a small world" so next time you go try to find out where the tower near small world was and remember he died near there.
You may be right about why the skyway was taken out. However,it really would not have cost all that much to have two or three specially made skybuckets with a wider door to accommodate a wheelchair to rollinto it and then be locked inplace like on the disney buses. Then a small seating area for wheelchair people's families to sit.But then again,a weight issue would be in play, but a regular bucket is always right behind the handicapped buckets for families as well.it would have worked.
@funspot101 Nope. Disneyland has had the submarines since 1959 when the original atraction closed in 1998. WDW had their subs from 1971-1994 but they weren't moved to Disneyland. Disneyland brought the subs back Nemo themed (but not as good as the original) in 2007. The subs were stored inside the show building with all the sets rotting away. At WDW they did the same but only for a while when they took them out and destroyed most of them. Only 2 subs are left.
I just visit WDW a couple of days ago, my first time there, I have fun there and I never had a chance to ride the skyway because it closes 10 years ago
The Skyway ride, which had been scheduled to be closed before the accident occurred, was permanently closed on November 10, 1999.[73] As a result of the accident, OSHA fined Walt Disney World US$4,500 for violating federal safety codes in that work area.
On February 14, 1999, a 65-year-old part-time custodian was killed when he fell off the gondola. He was cleaning the Fantasyland Skyway station platform when the ride was accidentally turned on. He was in the path of the ride vehicles, and grabbed a passing gondola in an attempt to save himself. He lost his grip and fell 40 feet, landing in a flower bed near the Dumbo ride. He died shortly after being taken to a local hospital.
Great video...first disabled people get to go to the front of the lines...then they take out Skyway because of them? They already get the best parking spaces...what more do they want!?
My guess would be because wikipedia doesn't CREATE anything. They only post what other write and since they don't give credit to the actual writers,,,,,, no credit is given is correct.
Did they sell the Skyride (minus the gondolas) to Busch Gardens Africa in Tampa, FL? I swear the layout is exactly the same. Think of it, the ride from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom is virtually identical to the ride from Stanlyville to the station near the Crown Colony Restaraunt at Busch Gardens Africa in Tampa, FL.
Walt would roll over in his grave if he knew they took the Skyway out, not to mention other things they have done here at WDW. So sad

tjtechie08 2 years ago
i think it was too old, and it couldent support anymore, but then again, idk

I believe this was the first Skyride to have a bend in it's course. I think it also had one of the longest stretches between towers as well.
In any case it's nice to see what WDW looked like back then when 20,000 Leagues was still around. Anyone know what they did with the original boats?
You viewers may not know this, but Fantasyland is about to be expanded and drasitcally changed as well.

You're very wrong, the GFDL is set up so that authors are credited. Check the History page and you can see who contributed what.

No, not that they were jealous. That was a adding factor, but not the main one. It was closed mainly due to staffing problems I think.
