@Salix800 Blasphemy is mentioned in the Constitution and we have never had a referendum to remove it - so there is a constitutional requirement to have a blasphemy law on the statute books until such time as the government decides to have a referendum.

Dermot Ahearne made a mockery of his Government's position in the U.N. when he introducced this backward law. Ahearne should be ashamed of himself. Listen to Muslin leader Ali Selim at 7:30 says " We dont impose it on anyone". This is a barefaced lie. The penalty specified in the "holy" Qu'ran for leaving the Islam is death. And there are enough crackpots out there to do it too. For "degrade" it read critise it. This religion of complete "peace" could kill you as an infidel for that.

This law was enacted simply to boost trade with the Middle East. It harps back to the problems the Danes faced in the wake of the Mohammed cartoon fiasco. You will remember that the Irish Government sent a trade delegation headed by the President to the UAE and Saudi Arabia in an effort to capitalize on Demarks unfortunate problems. This happened while the Danish and Swedish Embassys were still smoldering after being attacked and burned.

This is completely stupid, it is the year 2010 not 1210, we have evolved into what we are today because of saying no to religion, just look at the comparison`s between a non-religious westerner and a muslim from the middle-east, the diffference is staggering, the non-religious are more intelligent, honest and peaceful.

i agree with the blasphemy law, ur religious beliefs ar as innate to ur being as ur skin color and nationality, u can change ur beliefs but should never ever be tormented or ridiculed for them (as long as they are not hurting ureself or others) the institutions ar at fault as the recent scandals hav shown but if all people hav in time of great suffering is faith then why try take that away from them. Religion has been responsible for the deaths of millions of people and should be open to critical response as much as politics, racism, violence, art, entertainment.

the mistake everyone makes is religion has caused so many deaths but it hasn't, people have. Amazing people do good in the name of religion, but it is bad people who use religion to find differences and hate others. I agree that any institution that condones violence should be regulated but that is because the people condoning it must be regulated. The "golden rule" of most religions is treat others the way you would like them to treat you". Anyone not following that should be held accountable.

I find it odd, the Irish media always challenges the govt while the US media is always biased regardless if it was red or blue. Credit where it's due to RTE, but FOX and CNN are running the show,shame
