  • great player, phrasing blues perfectly in a sea of jazz

  • Fantastico come sempre !!!!

  • Too bad artists have to play in noisy clubs like this where some people are trying to listen while other jerks have to see how loud they can talk. I've been there, and it's no fun to try and listen to an artist while some joker is hollering out, "Do some Skynard".

  • fantastic video, your left hand slipping on the neck and freet very nice, I never seens before, I always admire jimmy raney here in brasil, since I listened oldies rare recordings from my father, thank you for post this video.

  • it's so great to hear and see this master playing up close!

    thanks for this post.

any videos of jimmy or his talented son doug are greatly appreciated.

    thanks again!

  • what great lines.he does not mess around.

  • Beautiful Jazz Guitar...Jimmy-- Tal and a few others were doing this back in 1950.They built the FOUNDATION.

  • Awesome. Thanks for posting this. It's great to see how he plays these lines. He seems to glide over the fretboard rarely using his pinky. Very similar to Wes Montgomery.

  • Great video. Not only because its Jimmy Raney, but just to see only the fingers playing the guitar.

  • Swing , preciso , gusto , logica nell'improvvisazione e belle scelte di note , accenti , gran suono , bel tocco , armonicamente giusto , grande senso dello spazio , ect... JIMMY RANEY ti adoro !!!!! Da te si imparano migliaia di cose tutti i giorni.

  • amazing once again! i can never get enough of jimmy raney!

  • 10000 stars, for the first 10 sec, than it keeps going up after that.Endless thanks for one of my heros.

  • The best thing about Jimmy is he knows when he shouldn't play -- and that's when he's not hearing an idea! The man doesn't waste a single phrase.

  • This is just like charlie parker himself singing through the the chords

  • Way Cool !! : )))

  • wow! another fine example of the world's finest bebop guitarist! This is the first time I have seen his left hand doing what Jimmy did best, playing what he heard! Incredible flowing, endless melodic lines. Thank (videographer) you for this very informative clip of Jimmy playing.

  • Wow what a fantastic gift to guitar players to see jimmy's hand like this. Sincere thanks Jon. His masterful technique, relaxed fluency and amazing rhythmic freedom in such detail! So few people genuinely imrpovise with all aspects of music while being at the same time so rooted in the harmony. Jimmy was a beautiful player and has enriched my life for many years. I very muched enjoyed your Clips on your site too Jon and am now off to find your album.

  • Thanks Jeff. Glad you enjoyed the video. You know growing up seeing him play at the time I realize how much I took for granted the experience of seeing him play and those magic fingers. So thanks really belong to the videographer for being so obsessed! My father used to joke about his facial expressions on this video. Little did he know that the world we be enjoying his everyone move, expressions and all!

    Cheers

    Jon

  • Absolutely beautiful music! Please, please, please keep these coming, raneyjr.

  • The great Jimy!!!!

  • Ogni tanto faccio un giro per sentire questo grande chitarrista e mi accorgo sempre di più di quanto era grande. Rimarrai per me il numero 1 tra i chitarristi di jazz al mondo. Vera improvvisazione !!!!! Viva Jimmy Raney.

  • Jazz guitar wizardry from one of the absolute greats. He was so fluid and his improvisations seemed to flow through his fingers.

  • Who built the guitar he's playing? Looks like a hand-carved non-production model.

  • Looks like it's a Hofner.

  • Yeah, but it's the same instrument he's using in the "Guitar Show" clip, which has a notch in the headstock, which is something I've never seen in a Hofner. I know what you mean though, the way the part of the headstock you can see looks like Hofner. Could it be an early Benedetto?

  • that's a guitar built by Atilla Zoller. Atilla not only played but he also built guitars - he also was known for his pick ups. Right now that guitar the same one belongs to Peter Leitch, a Canadian jazz guitarist.

  • My God, what a master, and to see his left hand so close up... Pure expression. These clips are a revelation...

  • your welcome!

    jon

  • Jimmy's playing, the shape of his lines, is a thing of beauty. I never got to see him live so watching these videos is a real treat. A giant on the instrument, thanks for posting this!
