  • Fred and Lamont may have fought a lot, but really they were eachother's bestfriend.

  • Notice how different the living room looked in the beginning of the series? The wood chair with the plaid cushion that was Fred's favorite seat was in the back towards the stairs. Early in season 2 it was just to the viewer's right of the sofa where it stayed until the end.

Visit the Vintage Toledo TV website for an ad about the series premiere, and another ad for a "S&S" comedy album released by RCA (the then-parent of NBC) that summer.

  • Sanford and Son-Crossed Swords

    Episode: 001 | Aired: January 14, 1972

Lamont discovers that the porcelain figure he has brought is worth a great deal of money and decides to auction off the piece.

  • January 14, 1972. It was 40 years ago today that Sanford and Son premiered on NBC.

  • Happy 40th anniversary, Sanford and Son!

  • wow Lamont collected used whiskey bottles and they "funnelled what they found into existing liquor? Nice lol

  • Lamont was CONSIDERABLY more argumentative and disrespectful to Fred in the early episodes. Viewers hated this, so the writers softened Lamont up midway through the series.

  • @FutureNewsAnchor As the series went on, it was established to make Fred the more dominant of the two. And sometimes, he had to bail Lamont out of situations. Lamont could be naive at times (copper, poker, "antique" commode, the wedding).

  • @FutureNewsAnchor I think Fred got a lot meaner too lol

  • I agree that Lamont was extremely disrespectful. However, I ALSO believe that there are some parents who don't WANT to be respected. If Lamont came home, & spoke nicely to Fred, called him "Sir", etc. Fred wouldn't appreciate it, and he'd keep pushing his son, unntil Lamont snapped at him, finally. This DID happen on this show B4.. I know whereof I speak; I've got a parent like this. They liked being "sassed". but I hated doing it. I decided to start being respectful, & THEY HATED IT! Strange?

  • LMAO!!! Fuckin' HILARIOUS!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! LMAO!!! Jay - FB Account, JaySmithBeast84@yahoo.com....

  • Lemont got under my skin the whole while, he was even worst in this. How can you talk to your father that way, I would've knock his dumb ass on his tail. He can't do nothing without Fred, he can't cook clean are nothing. Fred was he man, lemont was just dumb he make me sick. Always starting something then laugh about it. Ughhhhhhh

  • @Lovegurl2003 I know this is old but thought I'd comment..Well I don't think it's THAT one-sided. Fred and Lamont were almost more like brothers than they were Father and Son, and when 2 strong willed people share space they are gonna butt heads. I think Fred and Lamont depended on EACHOTHER a lot, I know Fred cooks and cleans for Lamont, BUT Lamont goes out and make a living for Fred. So it's kinda 2-way partnership they have. Fred couldn't really survibe without Lamont either.

  • Wow, look how skinny Fred is here!

  • I would have slapped that box out of his hands if I was his father

  • why in hell does lamont talk to his father that way man i've been watching this show for years and i just cant understand why he talks to him like that man thats totally not cool

  • that show is funy as hell ive been watchin this show forever im 46 years old now the show fictional becaause i real life lamont would get his head knock in a bunch of times he halfway talked to my father like that shit my dad is 81 years old and i still give him the upmost respect

  • aint nothing in the world uglier than a 90 year old white woman

  • the first 3 seasons was the funniest, but the rest was down the shits the characters wasnt as funny as the early seasons, when redd foxx took time off of the show, and grady stepped in, thats when it went down to the shits, dont get me wrong grady's funny but still red foxx was the shit!!!!!

  • Lamont needs more then five of these across his lips. Lamont needs to get his ass kicked.

  • A load of old crap

  • Was this their first episode????

  • @m0renaChoco89 yes it was...january 14, 1972

  • @m0renaChoco89

    yes it is....january 14 1972

  • @m0renaChoco89 yes it is....january 14 1972

  • how would you like one across your lip!

  • I think Cleavon Little was originally offered the role of Lamont. Cleavon Little and Demond Wilson guest starred in All in The Family before Sanford and Son was created.

  • Nothing wrong with being a junkman it's a honest living. besides Lamont is not smart enough to be anything else if he was he would have left a long time ago. plus he is not a smart as he thinks he is. he is like all people who think they are better then they really are. nothing wrong with improving your life but don't pretend your smarter then you think you are. all of lamont's idea's fail.

  • in the morrrrrrrring.....

  • Does anybody know the name of the song at the beginning?

  • @kingoliver45 Carolina in the morning

  • fred needed to beat Lamont's ass

  • @hitsville4ever , I agree 100%. he needs to learn respect.

  • after this episode, the piano is gone from the Sanford house without any explanation.

TV Land has always edited parts out in syndication. The part where Fred is cleaning the Piano is taken out from the TV Land episodes.

  • @405Cowboy ....Which is one of the reasons I now boycott TV Land. I have all six seasons on DVD, and thoroughly enjoy watching Sanford and Son on Antenna TV.

  • FYI...The earlier episodes of SAS lamont was very harsh and disrespectful .. I think they got a lot of viewer complaints on why he was like that. And if you see the later episodes where lamont is slimmer with shorter hair his charcter is kinder and gentler to his father ..

  • Does anyone know the name of the episode where everyone mistakenly thinks Fred is gonna die in a few months so they give him a party and set up a dream date with Lena Horne for him? Also is it uploaded, or can someone upload it? I havent seen it in a long time

  • I think this may be the only episode where you can see Redd's true hair color before they turned him into Sam Jackson with all those far out do's! Lol! He was barely in his 50's when the series began.

  • I agree Lamont was disrespectful and needs to be knocked off that high horse of his if he had a father like mine he wouldn't be speaking that way.

  • I dont think Lamont meant to be mean....I think he was just having a bad day.

Maybe sometimes Lamont wants to do more with his life and he resents his father for being lazy, while he does all the hard work. Lamont loves his father just in a bad mood and taking it out on Fred.

Probably saw all those rich movie stars and wanted more out of his life.

    just my 2 cents

  • what the hell was lamont doing with those bottles

  • I agree with some of the comments. I consider Lamont more of a kill joy than anything. There were times when I wanted to kick him in his nuts until his mouth opened wide out of pain and proceed to shove a pile of horseshit down his throat.

  • @Goukimessatsu2 very mature

  • @xanderluv I can type whatever I like, if you have an issue thats your problem.

  • classic

  • @bigrene2

It is the first episode. I've been lovin the show for 28 years. Just noticed it tonight. Thanks for pointin it out.

  • For once and for all. Redd Foxx's government name is John Elroy Sanford. He had a real-life brother named Fred Sanford who died at a young age. When John Elroy Sanford started doing stand up comedy, He changed his name to Redd Foxx, due to his red skin complection, and major league pitcher Jimmy Foxx, hence, the name Redd Foxx.

  • "I wore my shoes until they said kuh-suh" Classic stuff!

  • i never like lamont..he was always disrespectful to his father...and any elder at that

  • They should have gotten Richard Pryor to be Lamont Sanford instead of Demond Wilson. Pryor would have been funnier.

  • @AMEwrestling HELL NO!!!! Demond Wilson was the perfect fit!

  • @xanderluv Demond Wilson was not meant to be a comedian. People mostly watched Sanford and Son because of Redd Foxx. Wilson was a decent supporting actor, but Richard Pryor would have helped Sanford and Son be number one. Eventually Pryor became the greatest comedian of all time.

  • @AMEwrestling Sanford and Son was number one man! Allstar cast never work...

  • @xanderluv Richard Pryor was nothing when the show started. He didn't gain popularity until 1975, this show premiered in 1972. Therefore Pryor could have made a better Lamont had Bud Yorkin wasn't a damned fool. Wilson was not a very great actor, that's why his acting career failed in the 1980s.

  • @AMEwrestling Not trying to start anything, lol, but isn't there a difference between a "comedic actor" and a "comedian"? I mean Redd was a comedian by trade before the series. But Demond was a comedic actor with small parts in All In The Family, etc.

  • Now you've done it!! You really got me upset! This is a bad one! ooooh!!

  • GET THE FUNNEL

  • lamont be dogging pops

  • Hey, where did the bottle of Burbon go. lol. When they went outside they left it sitting on the table and when they came back in it was gone.

  • This is not a patch on Steptoe and Son. The original and BEST!

  • ain't nothin on earth uglier than a 90 yr old white woman

  • That truck is the most! Would love to have one.

  • "white women" don't mess around with them boy

  • Lamont talked to his father any kind of way.

  • @xxashyy I see that :( Richard Pryor is hilarious but this was mean and pushy. Sorry I know this was a year ago but I'm glad someone else noticed!

  • @bigrene2: Maybe it was just an open room?

  • Was he really playing the piano?

  • @smjjohnson no he wasnt playing the piano, it was a player piano. and im guessing thats why the people were laughing.

  • holy shit

This is just like steptoe and son

the script is almost the same.

  • I swear to god, I'm 50 percent Archie Bunker and 50 percent Fred Sanford.

  • This was the 1st episode ever.

  • "I reads all about this stuff." ...Pretty uncharacteristic of Lamonte to talk that way. Of course, this was the very first episode.

  • Lamont has an extremely weird way of communicating with his FATHER. There seems to be a huge role reversal.

  • @amolapaz1 If you have been living with your father as an adult as long as lamonte had, and you've had a father like fred, you'd understand ;)

  • My favorite SHOW EVER!! Soo,this eposode is the one that started it all,is that correct?

  • Yes. This was the pilot - and absolutely one of the best!

  • Yeah,I have always loved this show.I remember to this day watching it as a small kid w/ my father...."youuu bigg dummie!"..LOL

  • I second that.

  • memories are forever

  • The opening episode of this series. Lamont is tired of busting his behind while Fred sits on his behind watching TV and messing with the piano player. On a future episode, Fred tells Lamont that if he doesn't take the business, the State of California will get it. "They wouldn't want this place...they got enough pollution to deal with."

  • uh oh now you've don't you got me upset

  • Lamont needs to respect his father, shame on him lazy son of a bitch, he would be out of a job with fred dying!!!

  • does anyone know who made the piano roll in the beggining. i know its called carolina in the morning. who performed it?

  • One of the best theme songs ever along with Cheers, Lizzie Mcguire, and Silver Spoons!!!

  • This is one of the best sitcoms of all time - now we have crap like the Office and new adventures of old christine

  • Office isn't too bad but the Old Christine is worthless to me because that chick was on Seinfeld and I hate anything to do with that show

  • you know this is british as well the origional is step toe and son started in 1960's.

  • Lol,What The Hell Are You Talking about? Freds real name was NOT John Sanford. Its Redd Foxx. Damn, MOSt of you need 2 do a little research before u post ignorant comments.

  • You're the one who needs to do the research. Redd Foxx was his stage name. His real name WAS John Sanford....

  • OK BITCH. (:

  • Yep, your right. He got the name redd earlier when he was working in the 1940s

and got the name foxx when he told dirty jokes and his clothes style. In the show, he picked ''Fred Sanford'' as a tribute to his brother, who died.

  • True - The name "Fred Sanford" is a tribute to Redd Foxx's brother. Redd's real name is John Elroy Sanford.

  • Lamont was the straight man between the two,he played his part the way he

was instructed by the writer's. As the show evolved they made his charter

less bitter. His real name is Grady Demond Wilson Fred's real name was

    John Sanford.

  • Episode 1.

  • pop you know moms been dead for23 years lol

  • @ 6:39 ----Its funny to see the roles switched cuz you kno Fred wudnt be having none of that usually lol

  • I never liked lamonts character. He was a dick in the first episode. Lamont gets owned more later on in the series. The other seasons he wasnt as big of a dick. More of a squarehead with stupid ideas!!

  • I think Lamont forgets He IS THE CHILD and FRED is the parent.....not the other way around.

Who is Lamont to be telling his dad what to do or not to do...Fred can do what he wants he is the parent not Lamont.

I remember a episode A lady was part of some spiritual group Lamont wanted to be part off. She was shocked that Lamont was disprepectfull to his father and told him so.

  • Lamont goes african...That's the episode..

  • the banter between Fred and Lamont is good..this parent/child thing...i don't know..it would be nice if more children could have that kind of freedom with their parents without being put in their place..i don't see it as disrespect, more like equality..besides, this is television: don't take it so seriously!!

  • Lamont deserves one across his lips. He's showing more than disrespect. He's bordering on elder abuse.

  • Shame on you Lamont!

  • that is why I value this episode. the roles certainly changed over time to better fit the talents of each actor.

  • the name of the song fred sanford is singing is "carolina in the morning"

  • does anone know what that piano roll is called?

  • Man Lamont was a disrespectful punk!!

  • @my4kidsandwife: You'd be frustrated too if you had a dad like that. :)

  • @smjjohnson I would be frustrated...but i wouldnt disrespect my father

  • @my4kidsandwife Yeah...I really dont like him at times. Often.

  • hello i grew up when this show was still new on television please keep this show on here because it is a true testiment to tv in the 70's. It is the pilot show for the sanford & son tv show. I think Lamont Sanford is to rude his father if i had treated my dad that way i would have been waking up in intensive care. But this is a great tv show i love it i use to have this show VHS but they were stolen from me.

  • Laomont is a disrespectfull punk...I agree he is rude to his father. That's no way to treat your Father.. This show is great I agree but that character was rude.

the show is now on DVD.

  • Lamont aint rude he jus acting the only way he can........you try living with a nut like fred sanford and then youll see that there's no other way to be....

  • wat was the song on the player pinao called?

  • I would have woop his tale!!!

  • I think he is a little rough on his father.

  • where have you been with the videos?

    Holiday i suppose

  • I don't like this Lamont.. he's too grouchy. Grouchiness suits Fred better.

  • @Texa41 Lol! That's NOT grouchiness. You're right Fred is grouchy but you know he's just an old guy and part of his personality. Deep down inside he wouldn't hurt a fly. But Lamont(at least this early version) is straight up BITTER,RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. That's one of the reasons I rarely watch this first episode. He's rude in other eps like Happy Birthday Pop but only after Fred gets on his nerves throughout the evening, lol!

  • Lamont uses the "old folks' home" as a threat. I wonder if that occurs to him later when he tries to convince Fred how nice it would be for him to live there.

  • That piano was made by Steinberg and Son.

  • First ever ep of the show!

  • Is this the pilot?

  • yes it is!
