You guys are so right. Criss and Jon as composers were a deadly combo. I love Gutter Ballet album and much more albums after that. Check out Jon Olivas Pain, thats pretty good to, they use alot of old savatage material.
So TSO is rerecording Gutter Ballet but it's going to be more of a bluesy Motown feel according to Paul O'Neil. If they mess with this song I am going to be so pissed. They didn't tone down Christmas Eve....they shouldn't tone this down either!!! It's freaking perfect!!
Even after its creation in 1989, I still get goose bumps all over and tears always try to form evrytime I hear it. The greatest rock opera of all time. RIP Chris Oliva. We miss you alot.
Throughout my career I've had the honor of working with some of the best in the industry. Criss Oliva was one of them. He was taken from us way too soon. I worked on 2 records with him. This one and "Hall Of The Mountain King". What an amazing guitarist and one cool dude!
@lacytim I had a guitar duel with him at a music store once in new york city,I was just in the right place at the right time,I am getting old now, but we had a good go of it, and a massive great time playing guitar I thanked him he was a real down to earth guy,I truely miss the man and his riffs.
I have been calling it orchestral rock ... I'm glad you wrote "symphonic" because that is much better. I listen to Savatage while I drive. I can play their CDs over and over again and never tire of listening.
THIS was the REAL stuff!!!! Rock at it´s BEST!!! The video is one of the best music videos EVER!!! And Savatage was the MOST underestimated metal band EVER on this planet!! Only real Sava-fans know what they did!!
@BossWorthy Well said. Discovered them through Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Love This Video. Jon Oliva said That TSO is re-recording it now in its original rock meets blues meets gospel format but also with new song and Paul O'Neil are writing. Heard Paul on a radio interview confirm it and that Jon would also be singing on it. If he is half as good as he was as Mephistopholes on Beethoven's Last night I will be in Metal Heaven.
Does anybody know what happened to the official "Edge of Thorns" music video (the one with over 400,000 views)? It just seems like it disappeared very recently.
For my money, THE most underrated metal band of all time. Savatage should get MUCH more credit for helping to kick start the symphonic metal subgenre. Wonderful bands like Kamelot and even Nightwish owe so much to the Gutter Ballet album.
@BossWorthy every single person that knows/listen to metal, has always a special place for savatage. The fact that some organization didn't gave them some prizes doesn't mean they are underated .
@RismDez Every single person that listens to metal? Please. I guarantee you if you walked up to 10 random people who listened to metal and said "Can you tell me who was the first metal band to seriously incorporate pianos and symphonic arrangements into their work, creating a very unique style?" you would get maybe 1 or 2 people who said Savatage. Maybe. That is what I am talking about. Most people nowadays learn about them through Trans-Siberian Orchestra instead of their glorious reputation.
@BossWorthy i agree with you. All i am saying is that people that know metal music, know that Savatage did something unique. They are underated, but in the public audience. Or that is how I get the feeling.
@RismDez Totally. People who really appreciate symphonic metal or even just unique metal in general should always admire Savatage. Man, I wish Criss Oliva was still alive. Such a miraculous talent.
@BossWorthy I agree that they are a bit underrated but this makes the difference. I remember when they visited Budapest (Hungary) back in '97 during the Wake of Magellan Tour and played for about 1000 people (even less) in a small club. I was there in the front row and I can tell IT WAS THE BEST LIVE GIG I have ever seen. The atmosphere was stunning as there were only true fans and no "fashion fans". No security gap between the stage and the crowd....and they played for more than 3 hours.
Yes chris olivia has been dead since 1993 he was on his way home from LiveStock in Florida and got killed y a drunk driver caues i was there didnt see it happen but did get to see them 3 times before so and once for the benifet concert they had in his name to help raise money for his wife
I've been a Savatage fan and Maiden fan for over 25 years and a guitar player for that entire time as well.....and I never drew a comparison to the riff in this song and the riff in Hallowed be thy Name. Yeah...there both metal riffs by metal bands besides that....there's no similarity!!!
@13shivan He's not saying that they stole from Maiden, just that it sounds remotely similar. Using the same pattern, kinda like Smoke on the Water and Iron Man.
one of the best songs of all time! they should have been one of the biggest rock bands of all time no one has a voice like Jon an Criss well his guitar say's it all!!! SAVATAGE RULES THEN NOW AN ALWAYS!!! rock on my brother's in metal \m/

Why the fuck does Youtube think Pat Boone is responsible for this?!? lol. This is one of my favorite Savatage songs. Really emotion packed. Not to mention the video is fantastic.
whoever dislikes any savatage video needs to be shot in the face and placed in the hall of the mountain king. seriously all you people are doing is trolling over fantastic metal songs and completely disrespecting the memory of the great Criss Oliva
I thought Power of The Night was their best! Criss Oliva's guitar tone is great on the earlier stuff, to me it kinda gets lost with all the keyboards and the orchestra. imo.
The best thing I really love about Savatage is their playing and their stage setting for Trans Siberian Orchestra with the help Jon Olivia and his brother Chris Olivia(R.I.P.) to this day i still listen to Savatage my favorite song is 24Hours ago.
@Seedling132 Their career goes back many albums and it is all massively awesome. This is nothing compared to some of the stuff they've done. Look up Hall of the mountain king.
Yes 10redjet ... sad but true. I'm 17, and all of my friends doesn't know who is Savatage. But i really like to know and listen those old bands... and i love it! Savatage! \,,/
I dunno if I should feel sad or happy that Savatage isn't recognized by the mainstream. Sometimes I feel sad 'cause they really deserved a place in the mainstream and should be remembered as one of the greatest metal bands of all time. But Somtimes I also feel that is kinda good for them to not be recognized as it, it turns their music more impressive and gives it a kind of mystery... and when I ask someone "do you like Savatage?" and they say "yes" I know that they REALLY know good music.

@Big77Jim No one is "forced" to do anything. If you have no willpower of self control thats your problem. We don't all need to get hammered or stoned to enjoy ourselves.
I think the 80's have been the worst decade in history for what concerns music (the corruption of "true" music began), but Savatage is one of the few things that make me think that though being an absolute shit those years produced tons of great music!
@LeoTadde 80s was the best decade for metal, especialy when it comes to production, the sound was bigger and more powerful than before but still analog and "human". And you had everything from hard rock to death metal. Pro Tools and digital recordings killed a lot of spirit in metal. Also music was more complex than in 90s
@Katanus Yeah man, I agree with you on that point, I know that there was great music at the time, but I think they were shit because of the birth of commercial music! Come on, what the fuck was glam metal? Just shit, shit and shit to be sold to deaf people!
@LeoTadde Such thing as glam metal never existed (glam rock is part of british 70s rock) , there was a trend in 80s with big hair, zebras and stuff that made impact in every metal genere but in fact Poison, Bon Jovi etc, were pop bands. The point is that I also can menton a ton of hard & heavy, even power and speed metal bands that looked glam and were ok, even Savatage had this look and what?
@Katanus Yeah man, I already told you I agree with you on that point! What I can't stand about the 80's is the birth of "commercial rock" like Bon Jovi etc. that, how you said, is just pop sold to people as rock, because people feel cool if they think they listen to rock, although they know nothing about that kind of music! Come on, how can you call such bands like Tokio Hotel, Bon Jovi, Nickelback etc. rock? That's just to sell more records!
@LeoTadde i do agree with you on tokio hotel,..bon jovi somehow,..its not rock more ballad, but nickelback has some heavy rock songs :O ok ,..songs like rockstar is commercial balls,,.. but they have real rock stuff, like, side of a bullet, burn it to the ground, so they should be in the list
the greatest injustice that ever hit the metal scene was me hearing young metal fans saying Savawho? If you know what's good for you people, educate the masses!!!
@10redjet me being one of those young metal fans (I'm 12) can guarantee you that he who got me into metal did it properly by not letting me listen to any of the new metal before having made me liste to some classic metal :)
After Randy Rhoads, he was one of my favorite guitarists!!! He had a uniqie tone and style. May he rest in piece, and jam with Randy and Dime in heaven!!!

@Katanus Yeah man, I agree with you on that point, I know that there was great music at the time, but I think they were shit because of the birth of commercial music! Come on, what the fuck was glam metal? Just shit, shit and shit to be sold to deaf people!
LeoTadde 7 months ago

LeoTadde 7 months ago
@LeoTadde i do agree with you on tokio hotel,..bon jovi somehow,..its not rock more ballad, but nickelback has some heavy rock songs :O ok ,..songs like rockstar is commercial balls,,.. but they have real rock stuff, like, side of a bullet, burn it to the ground, so they should be in the list

the greatest injustice that ever hit the metal scene was me hearing young metal fans saying Savawho? If you know what's good for you people, educate the masses!!!
10redjet 8 months ago 53
@10redjet me being one of those young metal fans (I'm 12) can guarantee you that he who got me into metal did it properly by not letting me listen to any of the new metal before having made me liste to some classic metal :)
