1: They didn't interpret it in any way. Jesus spoke, apostles listened, Jesus died, and decades later other people wrote stuff down and claimed that it was written by the original apostles.

2: I have no reason to believe that their "interpretation," if they had had one, would be correct. Since the book itself is fiction, there is little point in deciding which is the correct interpretation beyond literary fascination.

If one of my family members was raped and killed, yes I'd probably want the person who did it dead. But laws are meant to be fair and I would be glad for the law to protect against my emotionally driven rage. I'm not against life imprisonment, because at least that's reversible if the person is later found innocent. They'll never get that time back, but at least they're not dead.

Unless we could be sure that everyone killed is actually guilty, I'm against it, and such assurance is impossible.
