The boat is a 1964 Cal 28 and VENUS III was her original name. I remember the delivery. Yes Will I do....I remember Franja bouncing the stick on the ground...I was almost 2 years old!
ahh. THOSE.. are reef point and reef lines on the main sail They are to let you have a smaller sail. You lower the main sail, and tie those ropes (reef lines) around the boom to make the main sail smaller. That is what you do in heavy winds when you can't just stop sailing because you are far from harbor.
ahhh... those are 'tell tales" they show how the wind is behaving over that spot on the sail. Because the sail is translucent, you can often see the one on the other side of the sail, too, so you know if the wind is smooth over both sides of the sail. or smooth on one side and rough on the other. The sail sometimes acts like a vertical wing.
Nice video. Ginger seems like a nice lady. Looks very peaceful out there on the water.

Captain Mack, do you have a copy of the home movies Dad made? Ginger has a copy and Dad has the originals, now transposed to DVD.

What was the name of the boat in "Sabrina?" The 1954 version, of course.

The "True Love" is the name of the sailboat in the movie classic "Philadelphia Story."

Being a total landlubber, I have a stupid question:
What are those little loose chain things attatched to the mainsail...or is that the gib? and what do they do...they must have a purpose.
audionautix 2 years ago
Many people don't know, but gib or jib is from the same root as algebra, or al jibra, and that's why it's triangular.
I have no idea what the chains are that you mentioned.
wildbill1911A1 2 years ago
they're attached to the surface of the sail. All those things dangling there. They look like little dancing worms or something.

you can see them clearly around 1:21
