China or COMAC didn't develop that aircraft independently because it is the MD-95/Boeing 717 project itself, just changed in instrument configuration, windshield shape, different and lighter engines used instead of RR or PW.

That aircraft is a recycle of the assembly tooling left by McDonnell Douglas in China when the company entered bankruptcy and, possibly, Boeing, the owner of MDD, sold rights to COMAC to built it instead of keeping the 717 building line open with few orders in sight.

that's Boeing 717 (aka. McDonnell Douglas md-95, a shorter version of md-80 with winglet and can carry 100 passengers or less) . Before being bought out by Boeing, McDonnell Douglas used to sent airplane kits to Shanghai, China to be assembled there.

yes, this news is misleading at best. And GE did not place 25 orders, or 50 orders as some chinese news suggest. GE placed 5 orders, 20 options, and another 25 purchase rights. Chinese TV needs to be more professional to explain what these really mean, instead of fooling Chinese domestic audience that China just sold 50 jets to the US.
