I fear this game suffers from the Pokemon Effect. Unless you were part of the fad back when it was new in the nineties, no one can possibly understand why Pikachu gets you excited or the old theme song makes you laugh and cry at once. In a time of HD graphics, voice overs, and first-person shooters, playing this game for the first time will feel slow and flat and boring, and you'll be confounded as to why it is so loved and praised. For that reason, despite my adoration, I don't recommend it.

@QuesoCookies I played it for the first time in 2008 on an emulator and loved the hell out of. Anyone with even semi-decent intelligence would enjoy the hell out of it for what it is. This game's graphics are gorgeous for a bunch of pixels. I have never seen sprites with so much emotion and life before.

@Mampfie I played through the whole game on ps3 with cutscenes and I must agree with you, the snes one is better. It took too long too long to load each battle, sometimes I didnt even want to hit my menu button because it had to load it every time.

Probably the coolest part about this boss was that he could use some of your attacks. All the elemental 2 spells. Plus he had a scythe! Yeah i did think he was the final boss the first time because he was so head and shoulders above all the other creatures.

@dragonstormx If he was at a higher level, maybe around level 50 or so I might've been inclined to believe. But only level 18 or so for the finale? Not really. But he's definitely hard as balls at that point to be reasonable!

He is defiantly the best fight apart from Lavos, IMHO, with the build up, and the fact that since there's all the plot going around him, he's a step above anything before him, and his own music, that I hear also plays against Zeal if you bring him with you to fight her, which is added bonus to that along with his dialogue with her.

Ah, I love Magus. He is one of my top three villains of all time (together with another blue-haired magic user and a giant A.I. xD). Everything on him was great. He was badass, his battle theme is great, his battle is fun, his story is touching, he turned Glenn into a frog (I'm so thankful) and made Frog into what he is this way, he never really was a bad guy, he is invloved in the games greatest endings, and he may join your party! Brilliant!

This song actually makes me think more of fighting Queen Zeal atop the Black Omen than Magus's battle, since if you bring Magus, this plays instead of the other boss theme. Her battle was immensely harder, even with everyone leveled way up; I had to have Crono, Magus and Ayla in there, since how fast they let me use those damned Elixirs and Megaelixirs was my freaking saving grace.

@9tgg No, first playthrough. After the Zeal Apocalypse, I saw Magus, and swapped Frog into the party. Then, Frog goes ahead and tells everyone to back off, and then it's just Frog Vs. Magus. Frog was majorly underleveled. So yeah, I really had a hard time.
