It's too bad that Turner was scapegoated in all of this. From all indications he was my type of individual: no time for pomp and ceremony, just "get on with the job."
Probably some inaccuricies here. I don't think the Germans felt any guilt or remorse for the killing of so many people, and also they did not fear the U.S. They were seen as weak and not a threat prior to the first war.
Under international law, the Lusitania was a legitimate target. It was carrying munitions, it was listed as an armed cruiser and it was being used for trooping. Further, Turner testified that the second explosion came nearly 10 seconds after the first, eliminating the possibility of a coal explosion. He also testified that when the second explosion occured, the flire/flood indicators lit up for the whole forward ship
One of the biggest cover ups ever! The British Admiralty should be ashamed of their actions, sheer negligence. It may be war but it was to higher price to pay.
The way victims of the tragedy were turned into propaganda tools to cause more senseless killing and suffering... it was just wrong. War is senseless and hideous thing.
The germans should have watched and overlooked the outcomes of what would follow as a result. But they dident and ended up getting their butt kicked in the end. Revenge
Sinking ships are a way to get a recalcitrant public to backing the idea of going to war. So are burning buildings that collapse in seconds. Why did 7 WTC collapse? It wasn't hit by a plane, yet it fell down in 6.6 seconds just like a controlled demolition, supposedly due to fires from ordinary office furnishings. After 9/11 the US was attacked by weaponized anthrax, stuff you can't get in caves in Afghanistan. No WMDs in Iraq. Two wars, Patriot Act, Homeland Security Act: unconstitutional.
Yeah. people always want to say "who is to blame?" From what I see everyone was to blame. Germany, The british admiralty, even the Cunard line. Cunard records show the Lusitania was carrying ammunition for the british. You should watch the National Geographic film "Last Voyage of the Lusitania" It depicts the whole thing, ocean explorer Bob Ballard investigates the wreck after he found the Titanic and the Bismarck, its fascinating.
that Luitenant Captain Schwieger did a good thing to the world (sinking the lusitania was an extemely bad thing though) because he started a process that led to germany been defeated
What about the British? They're the ones who filled passenger ships with supplies and sailed in merchant ships under forien flags to avoid attack. Why didn't they give ships fair warning? Because the British also hid guns on their merchant ships making u-boats weary making fair warning. The ship is a passenger ship, clearly unarmed, and this was a case of poor judgement on Germany's part, but that doesn't excuse the disgusting British strategy to use civilians as human shields against u-boats.
Nor were they more crueler than their American counterparts in the Pacific who brought about the destruction of the Japanese Empire, or the B-29 Crews that firebombed Japan into submission, or the bomber crews that fire bombed Dresden, or the sailors that blockaded Germany starving civilians. The only difference is that the Allies won and they didn't.
