  • Help!!!!!

Canon EF-S 15-85mm vs canon 10-22mm.. which have the best IMAGE GUALITY?.

  • get the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM instead, or buy prime lenses

  • Hey there, wondering if you have any tips for shooting video with this lens. I seem to be getting alot of noise and not sure why. ISO is only at 200. I am yet to buy the polarizing filter for it but would still think that I can get alot better footage than I am as is. I see you have been to Queenstown too, that's my old golf course over the lake there. Thanks for the vids !!!

  • @TheJoshtree123 You mean visual noise? On which body? Fixing the ISO in manual exposure mode for video should procude pretty clean results at 100 or 200 ISO...

  • @cameralabs sorry I was a bit vague, I meant on the 7D. I seem to not be getting a very clean shot. It is quite grey and also noisy with this lens but great with the nifty 50. I have done loads of research (maybe too much ?) and have my picture settings good, I think. I'm shooting at 24fps with a shutter speed of 50 which was recommended for that frame rate by various different people. Thanks for the quick response and help

  • As ever Gordon provides the best camera/lens reviews on the internet. This will be my next lens purchase to replace my 18-55 kit lens. Glad I opted for square filters now as I can reuse them, however what size ring will I need for this lens?

  • I am having trouble deciding which lens to get, the Canon EF-S 15-85mm or Canon EF 17-40mm L? I don't care much about the focal length, but to me image quality is the most important thing. Do you think the EF 17-40mm L is better in term of image quality? Since its got the red ring. Thanks!

  • Btw, my camera is Canon EOS 600D.

  • @SamiJam Buy 15-85mm IS USM. It's great lens! Very sharp, and you can use it for everything.

  • Dear Gordon, please brush your teethes.

  • @Belichtungsrausch That's as clean as they get. I'm from England remember...

  • hiii gordon i bought a canon 550d 4months back with a 18-55mm lens n now m thinking of upgrading my lens coz m not getting the sought of results i need.... from this....so should i buy the ef-s 15-85mm or 18-135mm....i basically need a sharp and very good image quality.....plz suggest which one will be the best multipurpose lens.

  • @ThePurabMann The 15-85mm is better quality than the 18-135mm, so that's the one to go for if you prioritise image quality! See my review at cameralabs . com as I've directly compared the quality between these two models...

  • 6:58 "premiere lens not budget"

its a silver ring lens! which is the cheapest lens that canon makes........

gold is mid range lens and red being top or premiere "L" lens. only red ring are premiere lens. Silver is in the same group of lens as the Kits lens! what a good lens get the gold, 17 to 85 ef-s,

The only reason this has a higher price is because it goes to 15mm with is harder to make but the glass is still the cheapest glass put in canon lens.

  • @FructusSum If your upgrading from a kits lens, why stay in the same quitly group that does a lot of the same thing. ok if you have the 55 to 200 or the 18 to 55 but if your on the 18 to 135 better to go up to a gold ring or different brand like tamron or sigma. In my opinion,

  • @FructusSum I think you're placing too much weight on the colour of the plastic. Believe me, there are some EF-S lenses with cheap-looking bodies which will perform as well as a red-ringed L lens in terms of optics. Just look at the results pages of my lens reviews at cameralabs . com and you'll see. As for the 15-85mm is WILL outperform the 18-55mm in tersm of optics.

  • @cameralabs Not really I can see a good lens look at the ef 50m f1.8 it great and so cheap.

Also I never said it wouldn't out perform the 18- 55 everything does. it the cheapest ef-s I know of.

  • @cameralabs Also anychance you could have a look at the tamron 18 to 55 f2.8, looks great but there are few good review on it. canon mount if you can

  • i love this lense on my 60D

  • this guy is scary!

  • I bought mine a few days ago. I must say that this is a very good lens (aside from what I had before, 18-55 and 55-250). The focal length works great. But from what I have, when you said the zoom creeps from 24-50mm, mine works well and no creep at all. It's either I'm lucky, it's already been fixed by canon, I got a good copy, or maybe because it's new. Well, let's hope for the third one though. :)

  • I'm just about to buy my first DSLR camera and wanted to get it with a good general use lens to do me for a good few years. I was considering the Sigma 17-70mm HSM OS (f2.8 - f4.5), but would I be better off 'pushing the boat out' and going for this lens? Is it worth the extra money? Is this lens too big/heavy to use on a 600D? Thanks for any help!

  • Dear Gordon! Which lense would you recommend to a Canon EOS 1100D entry level dslr? This one, or the canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM lense? I have only that much money for upgrading, can't afford spending more. I would like something quite good enough for making landscapes, night photography, portraits outside in the nature. Big zoom range is not necessary, i prefer making photos close to the subject. Thanks in advance for your help. Peter

  • @SkyEurope1988 The 15-85mm is the best general purpose lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C cropped frames (like the 1100D), but if you can't stretch to it, juts go for the 18-55mm kit lens. It's still good and will let you decide later what you're missing - if anything. Please see my lens guides at cameralabs . com...

  • @cameralabs Thank you for your kind reply. I have read myself through your lens guides which i found really useful. After that i was hesitating between the ef-s 17-85mm and the 17-55mm lens, but since i would use it in low light conditions as well, and big zoom range is not necessary for me, i am almost certain that the constant f2,8 aperture 17-55mm lens would best satisfy my needs. You saved me the price of the 17-40mm lens, thank you very much! Best wishes. Peter

  • @cameralabs Or doesn't the 17-55mm ef-s lens worth twice more money than the 17-85mm one?

  • can u suggest me a macro lens foe EOS 1000D

  • @Ananthu90210 Sure thing, the Canon EF-S 60mm macro.

  • I have this lens, is excelente!! for every day zoom lens,i have no complains so far, well only one, the manual focus ring to small, and the creeping. But that is matter of taste. in my opinion. i dont use that much, the MF.

  • Man! I have just REALLY checked out your website, you are a blessing to anyone considering lenses and stuff!!! The way you detail stuff and the diversity of the comparisons and you have like 3 to 4 pages of comparing 3 lenses with like 100 images each! Thanks alot! You are a star! I'm at my office and I just can't log out! Lol!

  • is this the lens that comes on the 550d?

  • @ZERO3cairns Sadly not. This is a mlens you normally buy separately.

  • a great review....

  • why is the loudness(or lack of it) important in cameras? are you all just creeps trying to take spyshots in the ladies room unnoticed, or whats the point?

  • @animeonperseest if taking photos of wildlife, the sound can startle them away

  • imagine a 10-100mm f1.2, 1:1 magnification sharp lens

  • @bennybong360 if only, if only (:

  • @bennybong360

    EF 8-1200mm f/0.95 DO L IS USM

    Imagine that!

  • @1mannlan for the same price as the 50mm 1.8

  • @bennybong360

Okey but we have to pay 10.000$ for the Lens Hood... CANON.

  • @1mannlan Yeah! i can, the price will be very ridiculous... If, if tey can make it.! ha,ha!!

  • @1mannlan Then imagine the price and the weight hahahahaha

  • thats an amazing range, pentax needs to make one

  • this lens isnt that good apparently. my friend owns ones and this is the second time the AF has broken. right during the middle of his trip to china

  • Your review bought me over to upgrade from 18-135 to this lens :)

Good review with pictures to clearly illustrate its strong points which really aroused my interest. Not too lengthy either, where those who are interested in the technical details can check out your website.

Please keep up the great work!

  • should i buy the 600D or 60D with this lens?

  • @lookatme4 60D is the better match for this lens. I own 60D and always pair it with my ef-s 15-85mm and ef-s 10-22mm. Both lenses produce AWESOME IQ with 60D...

  • @lookatme4 Keep in mind that the 550d, 600d, 60d and 7d all use the same camera sensor and processor - so the quality and resolution of the photos you take is the same between those cameras. They can also all use the same lenses. The difference between them is just things like body build quality and weight, speed of how many photos you can take per second in continuous mode, amount of photos taken before battery goes flat, and what video filming features are included, and stuff like that.

  • I got my Canon EOS 7D with 15-85 lens and it doesn't creep and has a lens cap, so guess I got lucky. Got the camera from Lens & Shutter, 100$ cheaper than other stores that I looked at. Sales person was real nice and helpful. The camera is SO! AWESOME!. Now I need to get a camera bag to protect this beautiful camera. Think i'll head back to the camera shop to see what they got.

  • Would this lens be bad for photographing paintings? I want to photograph landscapes to use as painting references but I'm worried that it won't be right for taking photos for my portfolio/ printing which is what I need it for most. I guess I'm just wondering if this lens is going to cause my paintings to skew if shot up-close. Any advice/ lens recommendations would be appreciated. I will be using a dslr with electronic leveler and a bubble level tripod.

  • Is the 18mm on the Dslr lenses wider than 24mm on compacts like Canon Ixus 220HS or Panasonic TZ20?

  • @MacEliot Definitely.

  • Hey Gordon, do you live in Queenstown?

  • This video really helped me !! :D

.. but umm, it is a GOOD lens for beginners though ?? ."

I'm just starting in photograpy ^.^

  • @lacsed I'm the same, just beginning.

  • @lacsed Great lens. It has a really comfortable range for the crop sensored cameras and has really quick AF-ing along with great image quality. I have one.

  • Hi Gordon, thanks for the review, I'm getting this lense! (is on it's way to Chile from USA, for here's quite more expensive) can I ask you a non-camera question?

where are you from? I wonder because of the accent (I don't natively speak english to recognize it) also, I encourage you to make even more reviews (in video), you are the best DSLR lense-camera-etc reviewer, so I ask for more!.

  • @aisles23 hes a kiwi from new zealand queens town south island just like me!!

  • How does it feel on the 60D?

  • I've seen quite a bit of barrel distortion out of Canon and Tamron 18-200mm lenses. It adds to the fun of having a wide angle lens if you ask me. Should I expect any barrel distortion in this lens at 15mm ?

  • Comment removed

  • @VannMichaelKohler hahah but he knows his stuff

  • thanks for the review.. i'd like to get this as multipurpose lens

  • i have just bought this lens i have it about 2 weeks and now experiencing lens creep from the 35mm mark it falkls back to the 25mm mark... im less than impressed has anyone else same problem with new lens? especially as its such an expensive lens only have it 2 weeks barely!

  • @ChaosRiddenReaper You can buy a band on eBay to solve this. It will cost about £2 £3 max.

  • @HarlequinJitsu a band? as in a rubber band? how does it work!!?

  • @ChaosRiddenReaper Yes. Search stop lens creep on eBay.

  • I've just bought this with a Canon 7D,

would it feel okay with a 60D - because I'm thinking of selling the 7D and getting a 600D or the 60D with a kit lens.

  • @Jonnyriffic Why the hell would you sell the 7D? I have one & wouldn't trade it for anything except the upcoming 5D mk III

  • Milli Metaaaaaa XD

  • i'm glad canon doesn't include the lens hood with its non L lenses. Including the hood would add ~$40 onto the lens price.. and I always buy my hoods 3rd party. In fact, I got all my hoods for $2-3 each, and i can't even tell the difference.

  • @evanvideo thanks for the info.. gonna get 3rd party as well.. it's only a hood :)

  • @majestixblue Just look carefully at the photos of the hoods, there are great ones, and bad ones all mixed together for around the same price.

  • @evanvideo Yes, you're right.. I saw one which is not so similar with the original and one similar to the original.. and they're same price

  • @evanvideo only different is model number, and price have compare my 3rd party with official canon ones in the shop, which now shocks the 3rd party ones for a 5er ok bit more than online but still handy if your in a hurry

  • Got the lens a few weeks ago and while it does have a bit of creep if you place it upright as in the video it wasnt nearly as great. Rather folding right down in an instant it slowly creeps down to around 20mm over a few seconds. Perhaps Canon have improved the design a bit over time?

  • is this ok for the 500D?

  • Comment removed

  • Just got this lens today. No lens creep, feels great in the hands, built well it seems and is sharp as a tack throughout the entire focal range!

  • can any one tell me how much zoom does it make in X like is it 15x or 20x or something like thaT?

  • @Hussam231 to simply work out the X/Zoom factor you divide the larger "mm" / the smaller "mm" eg 85/15 giving it almost 6X zoom , (5.6X)

  • thaaaaankkkkk uuuuuu!!!

  • how much is it

  • I like to to street photography; specially political protests, festivals, rally etc. Is this lens would be ideal for my canon 450d?

  • I'm hearing Canon will be releasing a 15-60mm 2.8 IS lens this year.

  • I really wished this lens was F4 throughout. Would make a great lens for video then.

  • @Dr0MjNoOoN i got both 15-85 and 24-105.. i get sharper images with my 15-85.. 15-85 is a lil bit warm than 24-105. the only thing i hate about 15-85 its not constant f4.. and canon gave me a good deal thats why i bought this 15-85, i only got it for 765$..

  • what is the kit lens like on the 500d?

  • why is it flashing when u zooming in?

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow

I believe he has put manual exposure control on the video mode, and ISO on auto, when the camera reads new metering, the ISO changes, therefore there are flashes

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow probably because the aperture is changing from f/3.5 to f/5.6 as it is not a fixed aperture lens

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow Most prob bumping the ISO as he zooms in due to the changing F stop

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow AF assist light. That's ridiculous.

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow aperture changing

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow Because it is a variable aperture lens, every time you zoom, the aperture changes. Because the aperture changes, you see a slight flicker in the video

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow It's because the aperture is changing as he zooms. (not a fixed aperture lens)

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow It is AF assist light from integrated flash.

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow The camera is changing aperture while he is zooming, that's why you see the brightness changing abruptly

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow it is because it is not a constant aperture lens (3.5-5.6) therefore it is changing exposures

  • Hey Gordon! I watch alot of your videos and they are all excellent. Very clear and to the point. I was just thinking though that you should try and change things up a bit from video to video. So many of your videos have so many of the same sentences down to the enthusiasm in the words! It makes you seem kind of like a robot. Get creative about it! Either way...keep up the good work! I learned all of my basic knowledge about cameras from you!

  • I just received mine for the 550d and its an amazing lens which will always remain on my camera. I'm also lucky to have one with NO LENS CREEP throughout the full zoom range :)

  • i love your reviews and especially tips. i would really hope for an advise, though. im looking for a new lens for my Canon 550D, that does good with sports shooting (snowboarding mostly on sun, rarely in night time) and small, always on-the-move kids (playing, running around, in water,..) and that is a good all-rounder. my 18-55mm IS kit is not wide enough, as well as i would like a better zoom.

is the 15-85mm f/3.5 IS USM good (or better atleast than the kit lens) for those things?

  • @willytrouble Yes!

  • @justreider i bought the 17-55 f2.8 instead about 3 months ago and i dont regret the buy :) the constant aperture is a blast

  • VERY helpful review!

  • You remind me of john malkovich :)

    Awesome review...

  • f/3.5 is the maximum aperture.

  • This is the best lense for video. I got one from ebay since this lense is pretty expensive elsewhere.

  • maximum aperture??

  • Wait you said 5D, but will it work on the 5D mark 2?

  • @TomCampOH APC-S sized lenses (EF-S) do not work on a full-frame Sensor (such as the 5d), those require EF lenses

  • @TomCampOH No, it only works on crop sensor bodies e.g. 50D, 50D, 7D, 550D etc..

  • is this lens zoom in more than the 55-250 lens?

  • @iafeka No, the 55-250mm lens will zoom in a lot more. The 15-85 is more of a walk around lens.. Wide angle and a better zoom than the kit lens, but the 55-250 is a zoom lens, which would nicely compliment the 15-85mm lens.

  • I have heard from many users of this lens that it suffers form vignetting at wide angles with a fully open aperture. What are your views about that? Thanks!

  • Hows this lens in dark scenes? Such as night time video recording.

  • hey i'm new to cameras and stuff. why are the leica cameras so expensive?

  • Canons are so gay.

  • @ExNihiloJimmy I agree. Their cameras are so homosexual.

  • @cheezecakeV2 not that there's anything wrong with that! ;)

  • hello. after watching a lot of your vids i want to buy a 550D and have to choose between 550d with 15-85lens or 550d with kit 18-55 and 50mm 1.4 usm ... can you give me any advise ?

  • @paterkekarel yea, get a nikon

  • hi gordon i am a begginer. i have a problem with taking flurecent ,very bright , red it comes up as very washed out color i have 550d . any other red would be fine . i just wonder if this is not a camera fault , and its me not knowing what to do/ thanks

  • great review

  • Thank you.

    I think it's overpriced..

  • as i rotate the zoom ring, it zooms in and then out . is it normal?

  • @laskan2k yes, its called zoom creep

  • Alot of peole have vignetting problem with this lens at 15mm, but I never have any problem, wonder why? is it because my Peripheral illumin. correct is ON or do I have the only limited edition from canon?

  • Is the lens metal or plastic?

  • @taneli2288 As with all non L- Lens, plastic.

  • i learned what zoom creep is from this video =)

  • Is the 55-250 a good choice.. Please reply

  • @spurtipreetham It's a good choice if you are on a budget. I personally own the 55-250mm, so I speak from experience. If you have a much larger budget, consider an L lens.

  • Which "all around" lens would you rank first?...The Canon, Nikon, or Sigma/Tamron? (18-200mm)

  • can you recommend this lens for shooting videos with? thanks, philippe

  • Gordon can you please review the Sigma 17-70 OS Lens seem alot of people want to compare it with this lens? :)

  • Gordon, Was trying to decide between the canon 15-85 or the sigma 17-70 OS lens... How does the sigma compare to the canon for IQ? Is it worth speading the extra money for the canon?

  • Gordon,

Love your work, your reviews inspired me to spend a bit more money than I was actually intending too, but I thin the 7D is just fantastic. I only got it today so theres a lot of practice coming up. One thing, I also bought the EF-S 15-85 due to your excellant review of that lens and I do not get the lens creep you mention. It is a brand new lens though. May be Canon watch your reviews! Great reviews.

  • I have currently an EOS400D, but thinking of upgrading to a 60D with this lense, could you tell me if this is a recommended upgrade? Will I feel a big difference between the 2 cameras?

  • @Danrho Can i give you a tip?

If you want to film a lot, the 60D is the perfect camera.

If you are in still photography than the 7D/50D/40D is an better upgrade.

7D: Fast burst, Fast autofocus, feel like a stone (weight included), magnesium alloy, HD Movie

50D: The same as 7D without the HD movie option.

40D: Exactly the same camera as the 50D, but without some new features.

  • @PhotoPressH

    Thank you very much :)

I have already actually decided on the 7D, mostly because of the buildquality since I will use it in alot of demanding vacations etc. I hope I will be happy with the 7D + 15-85mm

  • judging by the reflection, it looks nice outside. and, I have an 18-55mm kit lens, which disappoints me in contrast, aberration, and focal range (for a zoom lens). in the similar price range, bearing in mind i am looking for a wider angle lens, do you believe my money would be better spent on on efs 10-22mm or this 15-85mm?

  • What is this lens like on the 550D?

  • @05mpwright It's a great choice for any Canon body with an APS-C sensor - such as the 550D / T2i.

  • @cameralabs better than the nikon 16-85mm VR II?

  • @cameralabs hi i got one question remained unanswered..so if you please. im going for a trip to canada and ill be photographing in the worst wheater conditions.. does this means this lens is not the type im looking for because its unsealed and moisture will take effect on the lens focus engine and in general? and if i want to assure good lens for this kind of situation i should think of buying a proper L canon lens? cheers thanks..

  • I’m looking forward to buy a good quality general purpose lens..me!Lenses I have in mind1. Canon 15-85mm F3.5-5.6 USM 2. Sigma 17-70mm F2.8 Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 is a macro lens. So I hope it will allow me to shoot macro + wide angle+ general shooting the sales man in Australia is pushing me to buy this lens..He recons that Sigma is a great lens (All in one package) Is Sigma 17-70mm F2.8 a better choice when compared to Canon 15-85mm F3.5? Is there any big difference in quality of optics?

  • @Kiraraa500 Optical is the canon 15-85 better. But the Sigma has f/2.8. Decide for yourself what is more useful. Shaper photo's or f/2.8

  • @cameralabs Hi Gordon, just to say I have been admiring your work ever since I got into photography this past summer.

Your reviews are great and I just want you to know that!

So, I bought the Canon 60D and I'm thinking of the 15-85mm as a starter lens for me. Would this be the ideal option for a starter walk around lens?

And could you make a youtube video detailing your photography skills and what YOU like shooting etc.. I think after all these reviews, we want to get to know you more.!

    Regards

  • great review ;)

  • Hi Gordon, I just got a 550D with kit lens and a 50mm 1,8, want to upgrade, I use mainly for vid but stills too, I was looking at 15-85mm or 24-105mmL, how they compare respect to quality and sharpness of the image, is the glass similar? what would you recomend, ?

    please help!

  • Thanks, nice review! My mind has an intense interest in the very fast lens's My budget is another story... :), Thanks again for the insight!

  • there is aproblem with this video, i was looking at the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS page on cameralabs, but when I click the video tour tab on your site, this video comes up ...wrong lens.. gordy...

  • @robblac On the 18-135mm video page at cameralabs I explained that I haven't done a video for that particular lens, but since the video for the 15-85mm included some comparisons, I re-used it on the page.

  • @robblac Fuck off!! were all freeloader here!! BEGGAR CHOOSER?

  • @pogi09282805724 oh your angry, whats wrong did you find out your dad is fucking your brother instead of you ?

  • @robblac i already know that!! but thats not the point!!

  • All your videos are great Gordon!

Just purchased the Canon EOS 60D and now I need to buy a lens.

Should I get this or the 24-105 L lens?

Or maybe even the 70-200mm non IS for sports and wildlife?

If you could choose 1 (for a cropped body) which would it be?

    Value for money etc...

  • i would jizz in my pants if this lens had f/2.8 or something better. I'm loving my 17-70mm f/2.8 on my 7D but I am browsing around an upgrade or a new lens to get. do you have any comments on this lenses durability/weatherproofing?

  • hey gordon, if you could only have one lens to use for as many difrent type of photos (landscapes portrait zoom ect.) and didn't want to spend tousands what would you choose please

    regard

and thanks for the vids they help me alot

  • @mosstd I think this is the best general-purpose Canon zoom at the moment - for non full-frame bodies anyway.

  • @cameralabs thanks you for helping to spend my money well :) really appreciate and value your advise

looking forward to some more vids

and i will visit cameralabs and buy my lens through there so you get some comission

    best wishes

  • Great review, lots of good information! But I have a simple question; what is ISO?

I am thinking about buying one, so do you have any suggestions of where I could get it for a good price with warranty, preferably in Europe?

  • hi wanna ask one thing , that big lenses is only used for zoom ??? or it has more focus ... or Ability to take good Portraits as compare to 18-55mm lenses ??

    please Reply Soon

    Thanks

  • lol

    does this landscape never change?

exactly the same as the 17-85mm lens review recorded 3 years before

  • @PlatSoul I have to use the same views and photos so that you can compare the quality and coverage between different products.

  • @cameralabs, i understood. you are really very very professional even when sharing your knowledge here. i really appreciate your videos. thank you for doing this!

  • is there any weatherproofing on this lens?

  • i know grams is what the rest of the world uses but also hearing the weight in pounds would be nice too :) you dont have to im just saying lmao. love all the reviews

  • just brought the lens but have no lens creep problem, it stay at 50mm - 45mm, no fall back at all *v*

  • @cameralabs Hi Gordon, i want to know if you can recommend any lens to Canon EOS 550D? I am thinking on buying the EF-S 18-200, but i don't know if i can use it on it. Thanks!

  • @GamerManni You can use any Canon lens on your 550D.

  • another great review. One question, how would this lense suite the T2i?
