  • He should be called boss berezovsky

  • he smokes :)

  • HEY! I searched for oligarch !

  • Nice... one of the few interpreters who can make this sound Tchaikovsky like Tom and Jerry show!!!

  • This interesting:

    Russian language

    French dub

    English subtitles

    German TV-channel (arte)

  • "it's out of tune" hahaa

  • Hey this is no Boris Jew from the Kremlin, please don't mix in music with politics, or at least watch the video before commenting you jerks!

  • i like his playing, but i hope he would play some chopin ballades~

  • Comment removed

  • @david213redmond he does, actually. do a youtube search. he played a few at his korea recital

  • i'm really surprised to see that he's smoking...

  • he smokes as a hatter...

  • dont you hate the way he plays chopin?

  • I agree, I often find the rubato inappropriate and ill-mannered.

i do not think he is musically sound with chopin. but I am an asshole too,

  • we are all asshole, don´t worry....

because we only speak, but Berezovsky plays...

  • sometimes yes...

  • i find his chopin-godowsky recording still below hamelin's par..

  • Agreed

  • Comment removed

  • @rvn10rvn17 then listen to them! :) Hamelin's are just dexterous, but the geniality and musicality found in Berezovsky's recordings, especially the huge tone he has.. hamelin can't even compare.

  • smoking is bad for you

  • ohh this gives me goosebumps

was very happy when i attended his performance last saturday

  • He says he hates chopin as pianist who can play chopin's all works and He obiviously knows about Chopin better than the other people . People who have never played the piano or chopin of course don't understand that . Don't misunderstand please . Why can't he doesn't like Chopin ? Chopin is still GREAT composer no matter what he said .

  • that etude is absolutely hard to play musically.

  • i dont doubt that it is! im learning it myself but im just saying that for such a famous virtuoso he should be able to provide a more musical approach than what he did in this video! 5 thumbs down is just lame i have a valid point

  • I agree, Berezovsky should have used his superb musicality in this.

  • @chopinandliszt he did

  • @bagdad4 dude, you are so deaf.... I bet you suck at playing it royally!

  • @bluesyboypete

Dude make yourself a couple of ears. Search for Liszt Berezovsky... then listen to his tarantella. Then immediately after listen the one by Yundi Li, one after the other, then look yourself in the mirror and self slap you five times and avoid betting somebody sucks playing piano because you don't know much about it... Regards

  • I think you're referring to Boris Berezovsky the business magnate - not BB the pianist. Did you not watch the documentary?

  • hes simply checking if the instrument is in tune.... for god sake give him a break

  • it's against the law to make a mistake on youtube LOL.

  • Vova47, he said exactly that, you understood it correctly. Thing is, I believe he didn't mean it literally. The key is what he says next.

  • chelomustis,

    you are right,

I too observed that Berezovsky and Cziffra

are similar as regard tecnic ,colour and interpretation.

Compare the Liszt'Etudes Trascendental of both(expecially the number 5) and you will see!:D

    Two giants!

  • ok He´s a virtuoso. He´s got the gift. Good for him! He plays just to show off how good he is.

He does not give more. May be that´s all that he can give. Good for him. Bad for the music.

  • partly agree

  • Boris is so great!!! I love this documentary!!! Thank's for posting it!!!:)

  • what concerto is that at the end?

  • At the end is Tschaikovsky Concerto no.1, 3mov

  • I really enjoy parts of this documentary, so much that I play them over several times a week. Great posting! Thanks.

  • Because he wants to show off his fast fingers.

He hates Chopin? Well, Chopin is not crazy about him either. To be honest, I´d rather hear somebody who loves the music they choose to play.

  • I take it you didn't understand what he meant.

  • O.K. maybe you can explain it to me. Russian is my first language and I heard what Berezovsky said clearly. Both french and english translations were quite accurate. What am I missing, IYO ?

  • Boris Jew?

Well, is much more pleasant for this, and

anyway a splendid man and a virtuose

pianist!Talent is no Jew or Islamic,

    is beauty, and charm,and

    dream.Music is no politic,

but a gift for the whole humankind.!

  • who ? you ? (haha) ....

  • You're an idiot.

  • Cristal stamp and incredible

    smoothness in playing

    Chopin,and he hates him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    :))))))

  • "To be honest I hate Chopin"

It's true, with this compositeur the interpretation is

    very difficult.

    I hate too !!!!!!:))

  • nvm

  • wat's the first piece called

  • chopin etude op10 no1 in C major.

  • omg the black keys etude was played at a breathtaking speed :)

  • i think boris is technicaly perfekt, indeed i think he is the best technician nowadays.

i feel nonetheless he lacks A BIT of imaganition, depth, characterisation. that's why i still prefer Cziffra.

  • I agree with you, i think cziffra is the best clasical pianist of the 20th century and berezovsky is going to be one of the best pianist of the 21 century. If you think well Berezovsky and Cziffra are very similar, they're both jazz pianists too.

  • Haha, I just saw him play Rachmaninov 1st live here in Finland. This guy is such a virtuoso, he makes everything look so easy and that just makes me smile. Absolutely one of the greatest pianists of our time. Ofcourse not everyone must like his style of playing but you can't get through that he is excellent musican!!!

  • I can't believe what he just said. Does he hate Chopin or his music?

  • In case you didn't understand, Chopin structure comes from the baroque 1-4-5 ratio. That era defined improvisation. He hates what has been done in the name of Chopin.

  • he was just joking !! lol do u believe what he says?

  • Not anymore...

  • Despite all the respect I have for this man, I feel that Berezovsky is only a prodigious technician and suffers from a lack of imagination, that's why he's afraid of the liberty given by the composing style of Chopin and prefers to play very virtuous pieces from Liszt, Balakirev... It's like he tried to compensate this weakness by seeking the difficulty at any price.

  • friend, you are totally missing the mark. when he said he "hated" chopin he meant that it is a challenge, but he endures this challenge well, check out any video of him playing Chopin's scherzos, or etudes - phenomenal stuff! he himself said that he was a improviser and loves to imagine how to play things in his own, personal way. so the lack of imagination in berezovsky is really an oxymoron.

  • Neither a mistake nor an oxymoron: this is merely my opinion. Just take Lugansky, they are similar in lot of ways: same native country, same age (or roughly), same repertory (maybe more rachmaninov for Lugansky but romantical and neo romantical for both undoubtedly). However, I feel Lugansky has so much more musicality... Les etudes? Go check and listen the full record of op10 and 25 by Lugansky, you'll see what I'm talking about.

  • He himself said that he was a improviser but the part when he 's improvising jazz is more dramatic than convincing... They really should have to remove it from the final video.

  • I was not really talking about jazz - that is more of a funny interlude than anything else. I was talking about improvisation within classical music. Personally, I dont feel that Lugansky has more musicality than Berezovsky, vice versa, I would argue. Berezovsky provides with a more passionate, built-up interpretation than Lugansky.

  • @nobulle Yes, his play is very physical and masculine and I sometimes wish, he would explore a more reflexive, profound, or even "feminine" style. But who knows, he may change to that (like Gilels did in his later years). Boris is still a phenomenon with all his dexterity. He makes look very difficult pieces seem lightweight.

  • @flippert0 he definitely has that. just listen to his performances of medtner´s fairy tales - both imaginative, reflexive and when needed full of drive!

  • Indeed very interesting. Great pianist.

  • the spelling mistakes in the subtitles are hilarious. i think berezovsky is a monster but better suited for liszt than chopin.

  • Now we know why his art has been blunted over the past ten years. Smoking, drinking, and gambling. He looks terrible. :-(

  • I was in Ekaterinburg when Boris played this concerto! It was Great!

  • What do you mean darn? Music is richer than riches.

  • lol you're so dam right !! :|

  • yes clear off you pleb!!

  • thx very much for posting, i only catched the last 5 minutes of this wehn it was on tv and hated myself for having missed the rest.. until now :)

  • Very interesting! thanx for posting. It would be nice to know beforehand what music is played in the video.
