  • So effort less for both horse and rider. The horse must have been very talented but more importantly he was taught to carry himself correctly and was brought along to have the muscle tone and fitness to move this well. I love how forward this horse is and how he carries his gaits himself. Horses today rely so much on leg to create the gait, impulsion, and movement instead of being taught to stabilize themselves. It must have been truly incredible to work with a horse like this.

  • One of the really big moments in equine sports history..

  • Best Rider in the World, unmatched in Skill, Respect and Love for the Horses!!! THIS IS CLASSICAL RIDING, no wild stomping around in the Arena, no pulling and stiff hands, no permanently using of the spurs !!!! GOLD it was for then, for now and forever!!!!!!!

  • What a cool dude! And Klimke's not to shabby himself!

  • that are by far the best a tempi changes i have ever seen. the last real dressage riding artist of the competitive riders.

  • Oh dear - its absolutely stunning, breath taking. Beautiful, beautiful dressage riding. I get goosebumps every time I watch this victory lap. I can only repeat everybody else - as dressage was meant to be.

  • love how he's doing all that with one hand whereas nowadays you see people gripping on for dear life!

  • As it should be!!!

  • Compare to the victory laps at WEG 2010. Thanks for posting this video to show me what correct dressage is, and what it should remain.

  • @RussianSportHorses would you happen to have a link? out of curiosity I searched for a dressage victory lap from WEG and couldn't find any :/

  • I remember this so well. It was wonderful to have been there and seen it in person.

  • gosh .... the changes are so fluid and effortless he could just be out for a sunday afternoon hack . .a joy to watch, how dressage should be ....

    agree totally with Yzenriderh.. :)

  • Whilst not being at this Olympics, I feel so fortunate and privileged to have known them both and to have seen them in action so many times. I remember being at Ahlerich's 21st Birthday at St.George's and the reception he had at Munster. What a Horse and a superb Horseman. Lovely to see this piece of film.

  • Absolutely superb in all respects. Thank you Dr. Klimke, Alhlerich and Equimusic for sharing this wonderful footage of dressage at its best. We can continue to learn so much from Dr. Klimke. An incredible mentor... As Dr. Klimke would say, "as it should be"...

  • wow that is beautiful!

  • Fantastic-I remember watching this and am still in awe all these years later;

every dressage rider in the world should be made to watch this to see what dressage is meant to like:)

  • I waited a quarter century to see this much heralded victory lap, and it was worth the wait. Who today has the patience and skill to convince a horse like the strong-willed Ahlerich to submit so willingly, so classically? Klimke once chuckled that "when [Ahlerich] was young, he liked to buck and run away." He added that if he could ever convince Ahlerich that he "was not so much in power, he would be the best ever." He did. He was. They both were.

  • I can only imagine how amazing it would feel, riding that horse. It'd make your own one feel like a peice of cardboard. :o

  • This video does bring tears to my eyes. Such freedom of movement, it is insane how freely and willingly Alherich moved forward. Anytime I have a "bad day" riding, all I have to do is watch these videos and learn- NO ONE can touch this horse& rider combination. Steffan Peters is close, I have watched him ride many times in person and he comes so close.......The horses today are SO stiff looking, just legs moving..not for me, I want to feel my horse reach FORWARD for that bit!

  • god i wish we could go back to this. losse, relaxed horse with nice, light hands...

  • Just think how much better this horse could have been had he been trained in rollkur. NOT! Too bad so few have the ability to train correctly anymore...

  • gorgeous

  • Thank you for posting this; I didn't get far in terms of lessons before doctors banished me from horseback, but even I can see a huge difference. (I wonder if this is why half the horses in my '96 Olympics video look drastically different from the rest, since the 'newer' style likely hadn't completely taken over at the time?)

  • if you pause the piaffe, it looks EXCATLY like an old Master had painted them during the Golden Age of dressge. absolutely MARVELOUS!!

  • wahnsinn wahnsinn wahnsinn, gänsehaut pur! DAS war noch reiten!

  • Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. So light and fluid. This is riding at its best. You can tell Klimke and Ahlerich shared a wonderful relationship.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this with us all. It is a much better view of the tempis than the 'official' clip. I am mesmerised by it!

  • wow... O.O they are amazing!!

  • I'm speachless.. really amazing!

  • Holy crap! That was amazing!

  • What an amazing horse and rider team!

  • Now THAT is one happy dressage horse!! Amazing! :o)

  • Most beautiful is the lack of Rollkur, the horses nose pushing into the bit, slightly ahead, relaxed poll no evasion of the bit by tucking into the chest. Love it, love it, love it. Wonder if we can ever get back to it?

  • Wow... I honestly didn't know tempi changes *could* and are probably *supposed to* be so fluid and free. The modern horses perform them with a lot more hesitation and "lag time" between strides. Here, if you cover up the horse's legs, it looks like a very natural forward canter. The rider is also so relaxed and his cues are truly effortless. Thanks for the link to this, FuglyHorseoftheDay!

  • Trully, when a horse enjoys his work, this is how tempi's are done!

Can't lie, made me cry too.

  • beautiful!

  • That clip almost made me cry! They are both so relaxed and happy with each other :)

  • Hah, not going to lie. I did cry.

  • How relaxed they both are! These are true champions. Today's "winners" should watch and learn.

  • Poetry in motion =) =) =)

I wish he was still alive, he could teach so many things that´d change today´s riders world and make it better!

  • A true legend - now THAT is what dressage should be all about ... harmony ... just beautiful!

  • It looks like he's skipping around the ring, like "booyah!"

  • aw, he looked so happy doing the one-times =)

  • i love this!! thanks for posting it!! What a pair~

  • equimusic - thank you so much for sharing this video and getting it out there - I am sharing it as much as I can - what a delight to see dressage, that is so beautifully light, harmonious.... :)

  • You're welcome! And thanks for spreading the "gospel". :)

  • That was very cool. Not only does it show how well Klimke trained, but how much his horses loved performing!

  • I have been searching for video of this ride and victory lap FOREVER! I put this performance right up there with Secretariat's win at the Belmont as my all-time favorite equine events ever. Klimke and Ahlerich show exactly what dressage should be about - obedience, suppleness, and IMPULSION. This was a horse/rider pair for the ages and I feel so privileged to have been able to see this. Thanks again for posting this series of videos.

  • You're welcome and glad you enjoyed watching the "master" at work!

  • Watching this incredible partnership makes todays dressage riders look so bad.

Thank you for putting this video up.

    Watch and learn Anky.

  • and watch and learn Anky fans...why cant they see the difference???

  • I hope western riders don't think they're the only ones who ride with one hand...

  • Goosebumps! Thanks Mike for getting this up. Wow, now that is riding in harmony!

  • and no sign of a spook, either! fantastic

  • That is how a dressage horse SHOULD be ridden.

  • Looking for INSPIRATION? There you have it!

  • I hope all the recent gold medalists watch this and learn that a GP horse should be "UP" and "OPEN" not cranked backwards and being leg movers, instead of back movers.

Viva Klimke and Ali: inspiration for anyone who wants to ride correctly.

  • So true! This riding looks so much different than dressage that we see today...it's insane how "free" this horse looks and is...

  • I agree also - if anyone feels inclined pls urge the fans of the "modern riders" to watch Klimke et al....the more people exposed to correct dressage the better to resist the current trends..and the better for the horse :)

  • alls i can say is 'wow'

  • Thank you for posting! :)
