The entry of the Nazgul into the fight was definitely terrifying. Tolkien based part of the siege on the real WWII battles of Tobruk and Bir Hakeim. At Bir Hakeim, the Free French withstood assaults by the German Afrika Korps and the Italians under Rommel, despite being outnumbered 25 to 1. And then, when the French seemed to have a handle on the situation, out of the sky came hundreds of Luftwaffe Messerschmitts and Stukas while the Allies had no air power to reply with.

The battle was changed for the movie from the book. In the book, the Orcs don't enter Minas Tirith after Grond breaches the gate. Only the Witch King does. In the movie, they couldn't meet the logistics of the thousands of soldiers who relieved the city after the Army of the Dead killed the Corsairs of Umbar who were laying waste to the coastal cities. So, the Army of the Dead was kept on, meaning Minas Tirith had to be invaded by the Orcs to make the rescue more dire.

In the book, the character of Denethor is more tragic and way deeper, and he does realize that the city must be defended. Also, Faramir never goes into a suicide mission, and the romance story between him and Eowyn is also told.

He sought to gain domain over all of them but he only gained control over the nine greedy ringbearers of men. Slowly becoming wringwraiths aka Nazgul. 10 Rings against 10 Rings, a fair fight, right? Wrong, Sauron was actually only a maiar like Gandalf, who are servants to the Valar who are the gods of M.E......

I know it's hard to imagine how someone like Sauron who was so powerful actually served a higher being. Melkor was renamed Morgoth after his treachery and most of the first age was about the elves and men contending with Morgoth. Morgoth eventually threw down all resistance and won. So an elf went to ask help from the other Valar. The greatest war of all time ensued. The War of Wrath..............

And Sauron who is a much more powerful Maiar than the wizards sent by the Valar had regained almost full strength, I think that if Sauron won the War of the Ring, he might have been enough of a challenge to fight the Valar and free his master. Yeah, they would have been fucked. Background makes this story so much better. :)

I hate the way they portrayed Denethor in the movies...troubled, yes he was...but he was not this utterly deranged lunatic that they show him as in the movie. He was also a great lord of the Dunadain and the blood of Westernesse ran almost true in him.
