i think that the reason why so few people listen to music like this is because they have a hard time following rythym during some of the chaotic complex moments in the song. its not basic enough for them. simple people need simple musical patterns. people who are complex and contemplative need something more stimulating.

Good details I can give you from this Bay Area native: If you ever find a copy of this classic, give the amazing Producer David Rubison (ghastly underrated) for this project and his partner Fred Catero behind the faders & knobs, as well as Rubison over @ Different Fur and the the top studio, Wally Heider. So glad to be a Bay Area native without a job.... and a car stolen in Napa.
Check out the licks & the funky drumming by the drummer. would love to know who he is? Herbie Hancock is a genius. all you Jazz & Fusion Dancers i dare you to keep up with this tune & hold out to the end! Flex Groover/Jazz?Fusion Dancer Leeds UK
A friend of mine sent me a song called Bazooka by some cat named Webster, I think. It was cool but I was instantly reminded of Chameleon so I navigated to youtube & sent it to him as proof of how influential the Headhunters were & are. In 1973 I was a junior in high school & my mind was already blown by Hendrix, Cream & Led Zep. But when Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report & Headhunters entered my world, I was so swept away, I still haven't come back. How freaking sweet!
@lilbruddaproductions No, it's Hancock's gig. However, the folks on this Lp did form a band called The Head Hunters. The did two Lps for Prestige records.
Herbie and Chick Corea played with Miles davis on Bitches brew-the seminal fusion lp-real spacey. The band was a who's who of jazz for the next 20 years. Check out miles "on the corner for a more funk groove.
"Big Fun" is another favorite of mine from Miles from this period. Going back into the '60s, folks should give a listen to "In A Silent Way" and "Jack Johnson."
I put this song on yesterday when I was chilling with my friends. One of my friends said this was shitty elevator music that a 5 year old could play. I felt like punching him in the face.
@PsychoticFlows305 I'd be scared shitless if I was in an elevator and the main body of this tune was playing. Absolutely BLAZING Herbie and Harvey Mason killin' it on drums. Awesome.
@PsychoticFlows305 Obviously one of your friends knows very little about music....Bring me a five year old who can play drums like Harvey Mason (or horn like Bennie Maupin) and I'll hire him right now
@PsychoticFlows305 yo bro, I know it has been over a year that your idiot, no talent, close minded friend disregarded some amazing jazz fusion...... but just since he is so foolish to say a 5 year old could produce this type of musical explosion and amazing jazz funk, I think you should go find him now and PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE anyway. love the Clav on this track.
@PsychoticFlows305 That would have been my friend he would have became a foe that very moment.I can understand the feelin' of wanting to clock him in his face. For someone to speak such nonsense is quite upsetting.
@PsychoticFlows305 yep. my friends say its shit but they think its shit only because they dont know too much from music and they are listening to the stupid mainstream radios
@PsychoticFlows305 yeah man i feel you, when my friends are over i crank the herbie, stevie, but of sly and the fam, but they jst can't appreciate it.
@PsychoticFlows305 And if you ever punch him in the face, don't do a normal punch. Severe violations like this require a much more powerful punishment. The famous Falcon PAWNCH. That's right, flaming falcon punch to the face :).
@PsychoticFlows305 shit i wish they played herbie in elevators! or anywhere with speakers for that matter. grocery stores, waiting rooms. where ever. the world would be a more groovy place.

I like it a little more down and dirty. That was/is my problem with a lot of 70's jazz. A little too sophisticated. A little too Billy Dee Williams.

to the inquiry regarding other artists of this genre and era:
as one other member answered, start with a search on Chick Corea
then look up Creed Taylor Inc and check the artists he promoted during the 70s.
