Jackie Gleason, as he did with Art Carney (Norton), found the perfect counterpoint to the big, bellowing bully that was Ralph Kramden in Audrey Meadows' Alice. But all the yelling, all the threats, all the insults between the two only worked because fans knew how much Ralph and Alice truly and deeply loved each other. Thanks for posting this wonderful collection of clips.
I loved that show. It made me laugh b4 going 2 bed played on channel 11. I wouldn't describe this show as 'a domestic violence' show back in those days!!!! It's more of a marriage with a verbal abusive husband!!! completely different from domestic violence!!!!
Not so funny looking back. Very threatening and abusive. I have 3 daughters and any husband of theirs who spoke to them in this fashion would go : BANG ZOOM, TO THE MOON. POW,...RIGHT IN THE KISSER !
Fantastic... Just the way a man should take control and how a woman is to be able to respond without ever being touched... Not a threat just a feeling.. This is so classic. This was a man who is a genius! Respect what our elders teach us we can learn alot about respect...
God i just love the "Honeymooners". A show where the husband is always threatening his wife with physical abuse & violence! Because the husband is the MAN of the house! "ONE OF THESE DAYS ALICE! ONE OF THESE DAYS!", how come we dont have anymore shows like that? "POW RIGHT IN THE KISSER"
The technical reason was that it was wrong (and still is) for a man to hit a woman. That'd never get past the network censors back then. The threat was always played to comedic effect - especially when she told him to shut up. But despite his frustration, he really did love Alice and realized he was a very lucky person indeed. Most episodes, Ralph was wrong, and she'd forgive him. How many times did the show end with him saying 'Baby, you're the greatest?'
This was socially acceptable back in the 1950's, try putting something like this on TV today with such consistency. Im glad I dont live in an era where women have to put up with this.
i remember the bang zoom at 8:51 it was in back to the future 1 its show ralph dresses up as a man from space. did you know that episode was aired on nov 12 1955 for the first time and they show this in the movie on nov 5 1955 1 week now thats what i call a paradox
I always liked watching reruns of this show with my dad when I was young, it's a classic no doubt! what I find funny though is that so many people (particularly older people) complain that tv now is brutal and sets an awful example for kids, but this was acceptable. Not saying I have a problem with this show- it's just a show! A funny show at that. I'm just saying it's kind of ironic.
I loved this show growing up. My favorites "Aah Shaddup and You're the king of nuthin'" When my husband and I have a disagreement, to diffuse it I always use the line Alice says "AAAAAH SHADDUP" It gets a laugh and smile everytime...
We always loved this show growing up. Then once, I got thinking how I couldnt blame Alice. She's stuck in this dirty apt all day. He works and comes home with his demands. Maybe goes to the Racoon lodge with Norton. Once in a while Trixie comes down, but she never get out of this rat hole apt much. Then has to put up with his big mouth too. Lucy was the same thing only nicer home. Always wondered why Ricky wouldnt let her out either. ESP she could not come down to the club. mmm ?
@beadsandbraids This is really a perceptive comment. Thanks for writing! Both Ralph and Ricky were jealous, possessive husbands, to be sure. But while Lucy was a restless complainer and active rebel about her "home status," Alice was more resigned. Occasionally, her long-suffering patience cracked and she'd cut and slash with her wonderful deadpan sass; but, truly, in the end she seemed to love life AND her big palooka in spite of "everything."
I just read NASA is sending Eugene Shoemaker's ashes to the moon. I propose they send Audrey Meadow's ashes as well...Thank you for this well done compilation.
We watched Jackie Gleaon, live, in our un-air-conditioned house, when all the neighbors were doing the same. Johnny Olsen was the announcer ("And away we go!")
Then, Jackie Gleason and staff, including the June Taylor Dancers, boarded a private train to Miami Beach, "the Sun and Fun Capitol of the World"!
Later, in an interview, he denied he was dying of lung cancer. He said the doctors said he had the lungs of a 17-year-old. And then he died.
I've hear that in the fifth season they were planning to actually make him punch her in the face every time he said that! WOW History is so amazing to learn...
I am looking for an episode where Ralph was telling Alice a joke that he wrote for a speech and had his raccoon hat & jacket but he had no pants. Alice had his pants cleaned or something but as Ralph told the joke ( i think it involves beavers) I remember Ralph saying:
Ralph: "So you don't think it's funny?
Alice: "I don't think it's funny at all"
Ralph: "So you don't think the guys would laugh at that huh"
Alice pauses for a second and goes: "Only if your pants don't arrive"
Northbreed, thank you so much, this is exactly what the doctor ordered for me to laugh like mad....could always count on when Alice would make fun of Ralph and his weight, the "Bang, Zoom" was coming. lol
@TheMohdd00 cause it was and is funny....thats the difference with the shows today to yesterday....the shows today dont even come close to the comedy they dished back then, perfect example is this show is 1952-1956, here we are in 2010, and the show is still going strong with millions and millions of fans, including young people like myself today....I could never laugh at a show like I do this one and I Love Lucy, Bewitched....
