I've been caving in Waitomo New Zealand with a guide who uses the old antique carbide lamps . My one got waterlogged in the end and I had to rely on the other cavers for light .Had a lot of fun though but I did nearly set fire to someone's jacket when going down a squeeze through
It doesn't have anything to do with facing your fears. It's about having help if you hurt yourself. A sprained ankle can kill you in a large cave if you're alone.
It will be a cold day in hell before I go into a cave with anything other than some quality LED lights and lithium battery backups.

I allways go in alone mate. Its a very fullfilling experience. Face your fears and try it.

Nice video, although not that many cavers around here are using carbide anymore.
