This makes me happy to study Uechi-Ryu... :) Well done, my friend.... :D If this offends anyone, than maybe they are not humble enough... " 2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.l" Proverbs 11:2 .....
Your video is informative and inspired. I had the privilege of studying at the Futenma dojo with Master Uechi and consider that training to be some of the best I've ever received. Although I was the only American at that dojo, I always felt included and respected as a student.
got to my brown belt under clay hicky from sackville nova scotia he was a small man in stature but could walk though anyone he wanted thank god he was a peaceful man lol
If you are going to make a video documentary of Uechi Ryu, maybe you should explain better and use the actual Japanese animals and words with english explainations. I studied Uechi ryu in Okinawa under an actual UECHI, the grandson of Kanbun Uechi. I am still very good friends with the family, and this video brings great disrespect to the family and stlye of karate. TAKE IT DOWN, and replace with a correct and explained one.
@tilyfo1 Plus, so far as I know, he is correct about Uechi-Ryu... He was not in depth, as you said... And I guess he included a picture of his Sensei as well.....
@tilyfo1 Sir I trained with Mr. Shimabukuro of the Naha Shi Uechi Ryu Dojo near Kokusai Dori in Okinawa Ken Japan in the 1990s and I found this clip to be ok. I would like to ask where and by what means do you feel this clip disrespected the Uechi family and or Uechi Ryu Karate. Thank you for your time.
@1banryukyu The Video Explains nothing at all. Uechi-Ryu is a well respected style, and should be displayed as such, especially by those of us who have had the privilege of studying under the family. One that truly respects the culture and history of Uechi-ryu, would either make a video providing more info than just the tiger crane and dragon, or not make one at all.
okay,it's time to say the history of uechi-ryu ... actually this uechi ryu is a basic strengthening exercise done by the chinese especially the southern chinese, not the northern chinese to confront any opponent in any difficulties .... we can find this uechi ryu practitioner in southern shaolin, not the northern shaolin, the monk who found this uechi ryu is Ma Tan Liao Wang(马坦了旺大师),not only this, even wing chun also originated from southern shaolin, developed by a female buddhist nun,
@brenfroster1 uechi ryu founded in wen zhou,as i said before,by master ma tan liao wang,a monk refugee running from the shaolin temple, feared of being killed by the goverment soldiers lead by emperor Yong Zheng after the incident ''the burning of southern shaolin''.Master Ma ran to wen zhou located in the province of zhe jiang,a bit north of where the southern shaolin temple located in fujian province. At Wen Zhou,he taught local people martial arts and of course, the uechi ryu,to be continued...
@brenfroster1 during the middle ming dynasty, almost all the province located at seashores had been receiving threats from japanese pirates who eventually sacked everywhere they arrive ... at that time, unfortunately, wen zhou is also not excepted, many people died during the confrontation with japanese pirates. Therefore, the local people of wen zhou organised an army to offend the japanese pirates' invasion under the leadership of general Chi Ji Guang and Yu Da You,to be continued..........
@brenfroster1 during the offence against japanese pirate, general qi zhi guang accidentally found that wen zhou was a place fulled of martial art genius(this place has borned more than thousands of martial art officers who passed the martial art test carried out once in four years) in the capital. So,general Chi formed a formation to fight japanese based on the speciality of uechi ryu ... and this had helped the wen zhou local people to independently fight japanese pirates ... to be continued...
@brenfroster1 Sir Okinawa did not become a prefecture of Japan until 1879. Uechi Ryu was named after Mr. Uechi Kanbun by is oldest son Mr. Uechi Kanei and top deshi in 1958. Mr. Uechi Kanbun was born in 1877 and died in 1948. Mr. Uechi Kanbun traned in a style of Chinese Chuan Fa he called Pangainoon. So there was no Uechi Ryu Karate Do during the Ming Time Period.
this style seems to have elements of white crane kung fu, tiger claw, and dragon fist, interesting that it was created in japan, well okinawa is a part of japan so its a japanese style
This style came form central china in the late 1800's, when an Okinawan - Kanbun Uechi - went there for ten years and studied with the shaolin monks then brought it back to Okinawa. It was originally called Paingainoon until the students renamed it in honor of Kanbun.
Thanks for posting the little history lesson... but instead of George Mattson, my lineage would be Shusiwa, Kanubun Uechi, Kanei Uechi, Nakahodo-sensei, Shihan Neil Dunnigan, Sensei Manuel DeSa...me!
Sanchin is one of the 3 primary katas brought from China by Kanbun Uechi, who trained for ten years under Shusiwa, a Shaolin mon from the Fujien province, who took moves from both northern and southern kung-fu styles and combined them to create a powerful style called Pwangainoon.
Uechi Ryu has many grappling techniques, and throwing techniques that are very similar to contemporary forms of Aikido. To say that Uechi Ryu is a "striking art" is incorrect. Or to think that Karate in general is only kicking and punching is also wrong. The more you train, the more you will understand this. If you do not practice Uechi Ryu, then you should train in it and discover this on your own.
Nathan Johnson and his research group, Ko-do ryu, discovered that Uechi Sanchin and Seisan, like Matsubayashi Kusanku are only Sai kata, or forms with specific sai techniques intended to be used in order to disarm a swordman (Seisan) or a Bo-man (kusanku) while Sanchin is the basic kata aimed to teach how to use/manipulate a pair of Sai (a chinese police weapon/tool for civil arrest)! See kodoryu video for demo.
BULLSHIT, johnsons book on seisan n sanchin bein a sai kata is so mocked by researchers and been picked apart by bullshido that its almost funny..1. Sanchin is a chinese kata, used in almost every fujian and hakka kung fu style, and its used only as a chi gung, conditioning exerisce. NON of them use it with a sai, so how can it be originaly a sai kata? 2. The chinese never used the sai and the police were only equiped with a spear and saber(dao) 2 say the used a sai is a out right lie.
Actually the chinese did in fact used Sai. It was brought over from India as a weapon oif the royal army. However, u r rite in the fact that the chinese police didnt use them but it was handed down in various martial arts through out china and okinawa.
Hes only tryin make money off his book dats riddled with holes n history n fabricated delusions, lucky only idiots beleive him. The chinese police never used the sai, thats a lie. We chinese know ur history, u can even google it, chinese police only used a spear or DAO(saber). why would we used a farmin tool?(sai).. agian SANCHIN is a chinese form, look at the chinese versions on youtube NON USE a sai...johnsons just tryin sell a lie(money).
nathan johns a funny man, first he says sanchin and tensho are two person pushing hands kata...then in his next book he takes it back and says its a SAI KATA n always has been...umm ok? so which one is it? an another funny fact is he said that tensho done in ancient times as pushin hands drill...news flash miyagi chojun CREATED tensho in the 1930s based on crane techniques n as a softer sanchin...its not ancient n its not a push hand drill, miyagi the creator would have mentioned it. =P
There are a few Takedowns and stuff in Uechi,... but if you want to learn PROPER Grapling, Uechi of course isnt the place to look for. Judo, Ju Jutsu, Pankration and other Arts are the way forward in terms of throwing,.. most Uechi ka i know (and i know quite a bunch of em, training for almost 12 years in this style myself :) ) just have zero knowledge of proper Thnrowing mechanics (unless they are cross trained, which is certainly a good thing).
If I am not wrong, the crane is an attack with the fingers of an opened hand, the dragon is the "claw" closing a bit the fingers and hitting with the bone under the index...but the tiger?!?
very cool its a lot like my style goju ryu karatedo but a lot more open hand my sensei said the two styles are sister styles the same but not the same
I remember circle blocks with your hands and feet was a big focus, and we kicked with our toes not the ball of your foot, also you learned to have a body impervious to blows, you were tested on this each class. One story had Sensei Kresge letting a VW Carmen Ghia drive up on his stomach to show how tight it was, I think they were asked to stop the demos due to ins reasons. There was also mind focus that is for instance try to punch a hole in a piece of paper w/o touching it, things like that.
lower ranks start with points and the contact increases with your rank. I studied Uechi Ryu in the 70s thanks to my friend Drew Perkins under sensei Ted Kresge in Pinellas Co Fla.
hello. I'm practising shito ryu but I would like to begin uechi ryu. I would like to ask something about. The students in uechi ryu are they practising the point system karate or are they training for full condact matches?
hi, :) i am very interested in the uechi ryu style. but i wonder about some things. first, i come from a shotokan style. very little grappling is used as my sensi believed in striking gard, fast, and then getting away. would i be able to carry this over to uechi ryu,or is there a lot of grappling ?
i am a practitioner of uechi ryu and a member of the karate organization Ji Teki Jeku and am now training with Master Ken Nakamatsu during his trip to florida. you forgot to say that the three katas you mentioned are just the katas brought over from china by Kanbun. Kanbun never actually finished his training in china.
