yes, it's a little curious to those players who don't know, that in the beginning the bassplayer should use his thumb to strike the strings. Not in the slap-style but in a way a classical guitarist use his thumb. Check it out. You place your FINGERS under the "finger rest" (not thumb rest ;-)...) and "voilà!" - strike - the strings down in the neck position. The sound ist soft and warm, great for Standards and ballads. The early Fenders all got finger rests until ca 1972.
Oh yes, imagine Bach sitting on his musical cloud, listening to you and smiling. Smiling even more because you dedicate your wonderful playing to your wife! Lovely, just lovely.
i'm trying to learn to play the bass a bit more like this. as in i try to play chords melody and bass etc but i'm quite new to it. obviously a lot is chord arpeggios, but do you have any technical advice on how to get comfortable with such styles and things?
Very nice playing man. There are very few Bass versions of this piece on youtube. I found this video when I was working on a Bass arrangement of BWV147. And it's been on my favorites ever since.
I just posted a -flawed- version of my arrangement and will be posting a better performance soon. Please check it out when you get a second.
Very nicely done! I play this on my 6-string Ibanez bass (SR506). I think that the bass just has the right tone for this piece, so mellow and warm. Did you have to transcribe it down a few steps to be able to play it on a 4 string? I know my version required too much playing on the 24th fret of a four string(which I don't have on mine!), so I played it on the 6-string. Again, well done.
Oh, thank you! Found a transcription for guitar in a book which was in the key of G major. While trying to play the original, I found out that my bass sounds best in the key of E major, because of my 21 frets, that allows me to play the melody. The capo helps a lot, so the open strings are tuned in c#, f#, b and e. To play it on a regular Precision with just 20 frets, you have to simply put the capo a fret lower. If you are looking for a mellow tone, don't play it too high on a 6 - string....
I arranged a guitar transcription from this piece for the electric bass by myself. I found the arrangement for classical guitar in a book by Marcel Robinson: "Fingerpicking J.S.Bach".
Hab übrigens auch schon auf diesem Bass gespielt. Schon Jahre her. Ich übe übrigens noch heute die Courante aus der Cello Suit :) Die ist irgendwie schon heftig schwer. Habe mir damals auch die gleichen Pic´s einbauen lassen. Irgend so ein Bass Freak in Kettwig oder so. Klingen schon verdammt gut.
Thanks a lot...why this bass? Because of its simplicity. Just like Bach. The music on paper looks quite complex but sounds like a folksong. The bass is my "Bass of Life",my favorite, I think he sounds simply beautiful. Yeah, it's the simplicity of the bass that fit like a glove.....to my ears.....
You know, even Jaco and Jamerson had their "off - days" - so don't beat me. I didn't had the control at any time, but it's rather good.....i think - and you think so, too.....i think...... ;-))
Glaub', Bach hat es ursprunglich componiert fuer Chor mit Streicher, Oboe und Continuo. Es gehoert zur Cantata 147.

Hi Berthold,
I was wondering, what is the little bar under your strings for? :)
I've got one to on my bass, but it's above the strings, so that I can rest my thumb on it :)
All the best,
Olivier

I love your arrangements, they demonstrate a profund knowledge of music/bass/Bach. I just don't know why you chose this kind of bass.
