there's a guy holding the camera right? why the hell is he zoomed in on his upper body when he's on a stair master working his legs? where's the benefit in watching his face?
Seems like a great guy, but thought this video was supposed to illustrate why you should not hold on to the rails which he is doing most of the video. I realize it gets tougher when you increase the intensity, but if you don't have the core strength to keep up with the double steps or intensity increase then you should probably not workout at those higher levels. Workout for thought...
Actually, Rob demonstrates what he means by "holding on" at 00:20. He doesn't actually start holding the rails until about a minute in, and a lot of that time he's resting his hands, not really gripping the rails. Plus, he's also talking the whole time he's doing the work, which increases his oxygen demand. I'd cut him a little slack, guys.
wight lifters do the worst job ever in cardio, instead of climbing 2 stairs at once [which is dangerous and sometimes embarrassing if you fall], he probably have to try getting those hands off the handlers by moving his arms to make the exercise more natural and more effective. That will increase the blood flow through the upper extremities. Those machines have the program called "intervals" so, there is no need to change intensity manually to get the work and rest bouts.
I suggest everyone give the stairmaster a try. It's brutal after 5 min. I go to level 11 at times. I think it is harder given the fact that you have to concentrate a bit so as not to miss a step and fall...
@bigtonutz HIIT is short explosive cardio, so the most it will tap into is your carbohydrate and glycogen stores. This is of course depending on how long your intervals are. The longer you go, the further into the next energy system you tap into.
@bigtonutz Just dont do cardio in my opinion its to risky during my cutting phase i choose 2 days out of the week to just do my regular exercises but in high reps 20-30 reps and with every exercises for 3-4 weeks that will get your bf down crazy
Have always avoided these darn things since used to think a row machine would do the same job but add more use of the arms too, however seeing this video changed my workout plan for tomorrow, how hard can 20 mins be ( gulp )....
A sincere thank you Rob for all the great info. You've helped me achieve the mind/muscle connection and break through my plateaus. Im rooting for you in your upcoming competition!

So you advice doing 20 min in each of these 3 machines in a total of 60 minutes?

You should hold on to the rails just lightly enough to keep balance...but not to put your weight on. BOO-YEAH!!

What a hypocrite and a sham of a video. He says to not hold on to the support bars, but he does for nearly the entirety of the video.
