My name is Nicole and I also play the cello in my school band. However, one other cello player in my cello section has a problem with keeping his wrist strait. He tends to collapse it while playing, and I wanted to know what would be the best way to break this habit of his.
Hi Nicole. Your friend has a bent wrist because he pinches the string down with his fingers against his thumb. Pulling the string down with the arm, not the thumb results in a straight-ish wrist because the arm functions then as a large unit. The bent wrist, then, is a symptom, not the cause. The cause is pinching with the thumb. Try it! You'll see that pinching excessively will let you feel like it doesn't matter what the wrist is doing since the force is all in the hand
A very poor attempt. His analogy of the "free-throw"? thing did not work and I couldn't disagree more with his pencil marks on the finger-board. The last thing you want is to encourage a pupil to twist to the left, this will affect the bowing and body posture quicker than anything. He does not understand teaching of technique.
And as for the GUM! Spit it out and get yourself a teacher.

Thanks so much for this video. It really helped. That finger training is so helpful. I got rid of my finger tape and used a pencil like you said and started your training 'game'. I gotta say, my pinkie hurts! Thank you for your videos, I hope you continue!
I really appreciate these videos. I'm just starting out on the cello and your videos are helping me (amongst other things) identify and correct what could become bad habits.
How serendipitous! I too am 55 years old and I just bought a Cello and attempting to teach myself to play. I was feeling a bit insecure about what I was doing and finding a Cello instructor in the backwoods or South Florida is not an easy feat. These videos have been a Godsend. I am very grateful to John for sharing his gift.
Hi John-Wow, what did we do before Youtube?! Like many others, I have just taken up the cello. I have been trying to find pictures to demonstrate some of the basics of playing the cello, but have been unsuccessful- your videos are much more dynamic, and I can practice right away. What a great resource, and your generosity in sharing your expertise is much appreciated.
Thank you so much! At 55 years old, I've just purchased my first cello. I'm actually playing it after 2 weeks, thanks to you...keep the videos coming!
hey john, i was wondering if you could make a video on playing fast notes and fast spiccato. I just started learning I haydn concerto in C, 3rd movement and theres a lot of fast notes. If you could make the video it would be great. Thanks a lot and its a great thing what your doing, you've probably helped countless people.
Thank you for that very clear lesson! I was so confused about the left hand posture before this. I can now see the light. THANK YOU! Keep up the good work.
Good to have you back John. I really love your vids. It's given me some really good tools in coaching my daughter in her cello lessons. One request: could you play Dvorak's concerto 3rd movement for us? Thanks.
Nice vid for beginners. Thanks for posting videos of you that are so clear!! I'm studying the suites and I really appreciate being able to see where the fingers are going and the bowings. It helps a lot for interpretation.
again soooo helpful, i really thank You for your short, exact and easily understandable explanations :)

The old way to stop the habbit of this rist is ro put rose thorns on the cello's neck/where your rist lies.
