@Timebubbles Lend lease had been around since before the fall of France in all but official name. But i don't bother responding to your troll-bait statements, i make it a point not to feed the trolls. ;)
i couldnt find the original comment to which you are responding, but I thought that while Britain and America were friendly leading up to the war, Lend lease was something that came in in 1941 when Britain ran out of money, and as part of the agreement Britain gave America all the technology that they were working on such as RADAR (the Brits were ahead of the Americans in development at this point) and quite a few other things.
@darkmossie633 I really doubt even half of them acually participated in the battle of Britain. I think it's fair to say Britain won, with a little international help. Lend lease and foreign pilots played a good helpful role, but the large majority of the blood spilt on the 'allies' side was British.
the british where on thier knees(lack of pilots and aircrafts, they were totaly destroyed by the luftvafe)!!! every body knows that well...but the big error thet hitler made was that he changed the tactics in the last minute>instead of carring on bombing the military targets(wich were also totaly destroyed) he started bombing the cities and towns wich later was proved as a disaster!!!!!!!

Can anyone with a good sense of British history explain to me why Simon (the pilot who tried to land without wheels) was so disliked by the other men? Sure he was not very bright, but where was the camraderie? Was there something about Simon's economic class that made the other Brits unhappy?
Hitler never wanted war with England or France, those countries declared war on Germany (ie. their war guarantees to Poland) at the behest of Roosevelt and his European envoy William C. Bullitt (and international Jewry pushing both of them). Hitler just wanted to unify the German people by gaining back the land Germany lost in 1919 (that which had large ethnic German populations).
Hitler also wanted to smash Jewish Bolshevism, ie. the USSR (which is a good thing, of course).
Proberly they knew his chances of surviving long enough to gain enough experience to have a chance in combat were very slim, must be hard to get to know someone who you thought was going to die soon, I dont think it is a british thing but a human thing.

Ahh the wonder of generalisation's :) Nobody kicked my English arse because I'm not English. I'm of Irish extraction, living in Austria, riding a German motorcycle and living in 2010. I think every so called civilised nation can be ashamed of itself in the 20th century. To have a scenario where 50 million people died is outrageous. I think we can say nobody was a winner. And before the Yanks say they were fighting for freedom ask yourselves why you used Nazi technology to go to the moon?
No, I didn't - I've learnt about it in school, I have books on it; books on individual battles.
But what you're stating is meaningless and disrespectful in what the video represents.
You're going on about battles won and German progressions, but what is winning battles worth when you lose the war? It is worth nothing, because it has only prolonged the inevitable loss of everything gained.
There's no need to argue about war, especially when you have nothing to boast about.
If you didn't notice, I actually mentioned that I didn't learn everything in school - so your argument there is pointless.
It's disrespectful because you're going on about your victories on a page which involves a cut from a film which is dedicated to the few - that's why.
The reason the invasions were so successful is because it wasn't expected; Germany illegally built up it's forces and out-weighed every other countries' might.
the invasions were expected - not in Normady but near Cean. why is it disrespectful to talk about the stuff my Country men has gone under? you think the allies were the only to suffer on the front line?
and the fact that people talk about that Deutschland manufacterd its army is wrong - yet right. the treaty of Geneva dont allow an army of more them 100 thousand men, for a country with 19 Mil. people!?
No, I'm not saying it is only the allies who suffered, but gloating about your army on page with a film dedicated to the men & women who lost their lives in the sake of fighting against the Nazis is disrespectful.
Are you honestly surprised at the limitations, be serious, your country instigated two world wars for crying out loud.
My Country diden;t started 2 World wars. the First 1 is by an assassination and the second by the British, check it out. the Füher did not wanted war. Churchill did. well, he got what he wanted. he destroyed the UK by doing soo. the UK was broke and had a debt that took 60 years of payment, Germany not?
I never said Germany started the wars, I said it instigated them!
The UK wasn't destroyed by any means; far from it. Britain hasn't been invaded in nearly 1000 years - the Battle of Britain is the closest we have ever come near to being invaded, and we held on. The Battle of Britain was the most crucial period in the war, and we were far from destroyed.
The UK was in debt to the USA; never Germany... Germany had to pay reparation up until the late 80's/early 90's
The assasination was just the excuse, the detonant. Everyone wanted that war, Germans, British, French, Austrians, they all schemed for it to happend...but also all of them made a misscalculation on what they were going to unleash.
@mrrmancunian if Britain and France hadn't dropped such Harsh reparations on Germany at Versailles, Germany would have never suffered the horrendous Inflation and depression that allowed Hitler to come to power. everyone is at fault, not just Germany.
and technically, Austria and Russia started WW1, not Germany. germany was just the strongest Nation
I agree to an extent; but Germany deserved the consequences of the reparations - Britain, France & USA failed to enforce the treaty by appeasing Hitler. That's the only way everyone else can be put to blame.
Actor Robert Shaw was taught to taxi a Spitfire for the purposes of filming, as were Christopher Plummer and Michael Caine. However, Shaw had a little mishap during filming when he was taxiing a Spit, applied the brakes too hard and stood the plane up on its nose. Luckily, the only damage was a bent propeller and one actor's bruised ego!
This film shows the difference in national character between the British and the Germans, the British pilots are all throughly nice chaps and the Germans are all robots who follow orders blindly.
i love the polish pilots in this, they just did what they wanted, the english were shouting at them to stop talking over the airwaves but they didnt give a shit lol its a good job they were awesome fighter pilots
@darkmossie633 Your point is right, but there was a right bit more than two US pilots, the smallest estimate was 10 but also impossible to know the actual number as most claimed Canadian citizenship (with the help of the Canadian government) in order to get around the US's isolation policy. Within several weeks of the US's official entry into the war year later, around 250 British pilots claimed US citizenship who would be placed into three 'Eagle squadrons' and later suffer over 50% loses.
@darkmossie633 Let's see statistics, be honest small amount of polish pilots shoot down confirmed!! 45% of all german aircraft in the Battle of Britain. So, no matter how many of them fighted. They are brilliant and British Nation had amazing support to won the battle
@Rex1987 Well yeah man throughout history Poland was occupied, but they always fought back. The november uprising, the january uprising, the warsaw uprising, the Lowlz uprising. The list goes on
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH But then, don't you wonder the movie shows Poles' tendencies to ignore law and procedures- thing they had learnt due to years of partitions, when disobeying the enemy was an act of heroism?
@goldyn12345 Well....in the film thay were 'awesome'. In reality however, eh............well, let's just say the casultis for the Poles were high and their kills were few.
@grobo11 what are you on about? the poles had a very good kill rate. in fact one of the polish squadrons had the amongst the best kill rate of the battle of britain.
@grobo11 the polish 303 fighter squadron had the highest kill rate in the battle of britain!! check it out!! you shouldnt say crazy shit like that, its an insult to the polish pilots who put there lives on the line to defend this country. highest scoring raf squadron of the battle of britain FACT
@goldyn12345 No I checked it, you're wrong. Also, do you think the Poles were honestly fighting for Britain? Come on, you can't honestly think that. The Poles were fighting for vengence because of the Germans invading their country. I'm sure the Polish were grateful to the British for allowing them to fight with them, but they weren't fighting the Nazi's to defend Britain.
@grobo11 what history books have you been reading? you may have a point on the motives of polish fighting. but the fact of the matter is that the polish pilots shooting down luftwaffe planes directly helped britain prevent nazi invasion thus defending britain. also without the polish and czech pilots britain would have been finished the nazis would have been marching up whitehall. hugh dowding himself even said so!!
@grobo11 : The same can be said about the Brits declaring war on Germany in response to the German attack on Poland. The Brits only declared war to safe face. The Brits declared war and proceeded to drop "leaflets" over Germany. The Brits didn't fight for Poland just like the Poles didn't fight for Britain. The Brits fought to save their own asses.
@whaddupmf well you can't blame the poles for not fighting for britian while they where ocupied by the germans, at least a few of them tried to, unlike the british who never lifited a finger for poland
Polish pilots were among the most experienced in the Battle; most had hundreds of hours of pre-war flying experience and had fought in the September Campaign and/or the Battle of France.
Polish 303 Sqn claimed the highest number of kills (126) of all Allied squadrons engaged in the Battle of Britain. The death rate in 303 Squadron was almost 70 percent lower than the rate for other RAF squadrons., despite the fact that the squadron was the highest-scoring Allied squadron during the battle.
Great film. I remember seeing it on the screen as a kid. There have been two versions over the years. I have a copy on VHS, and one on DVD. The older VHS release is a US version, the DVD is from a UK print. Different scores, and a different quote at the end of the film. If you collect, it's worth finding both.
Actually the version I have I think you can get both scores on the one DVD. Which is what I did here - I've got the other score - Probably the only DVD I've bought!
@buzzmaverick ....US version?............is that the one where all the pilots are US pilots and save Britain and show the British pilots how to fly Spitfires.
@Aussiephil99 No, there are two slightly different scores for slightly different film cuts for length etc. Quite common with films to have different versions for different markets. Also the UK version has a better quote at the end of the film which would have been better remembered in the UK. The US one being one better ID'd here for those who don't quite understand what that part of the war was about. I prefer the UK version. I was talking about FILM, not HISTORY.
@buzzmaverick The reason for the different scores is because William Walton (the original composer) was fired during the making of the movie as his score was deemed "inappropriate" (or there about) Ron Goodwin was then hired. The only part of Waltons score that made it into the final film was "Battle in the Air"
The UK DVD as a audio option has both scores available. Also the UK soundtrack has both scores too

yeah thats right, ive spoken to quite a few british battle of britain pilots and they said that they loved the poles.
goldyn12345 2 years ago 2
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Especially when they have the photos of their Lancers going after Panzer tanks. Damn brave
keane16cantona7 1 year ago
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH yes but don't get carried away, as there were only a couple of Polish squadrons
in Battle of Britain
-the amount of thumbs up almost suggests they won Battle of Britain by themselves?
-that is of course excepting 2 USA pilots (Tom Cruise one of them LOL!) who also claim they won the Battle of Britain!
darkmossie633 7 months ago
@darkmossie633 Your point is right, but there was a right bit more than two US pilots, the smallest estimate was 10 but also impossible to know the actual number as most claimed Canadian citizenship (with the help of the Canadian government) in order to get around the US's isolation policy. Within several weeks of the US's official entry into the war year later, around 250 British pilots claimed US citizenship who would be placed into three 'Eagle squadrons' and later suffer over 50% loses.
XxxSakura101 3 months ago
@darkmossie633 Let's see statistics, be honest small amount of polish pilots shoot down confirmed!! 45% of all german aircraft in the Battle of Britain. So, no matter how many of them fighted. They are brilliant and British Nation had amazing support to won the battle

@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH i think if i had my county occupied i would also have a burning desire to get revenge
Rex1987 5 months ago
@Rex1987 Well yeah man throughout history Poland was occupied, but they always fought back. The november uprising, the january uprising, the warsaw uprising, the Lowlz uprising. The list goes on

@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH But then, don't you wonder the movie shows Poles' tendencies to ignore law and procedures- thing they had learnt due to years of partitions, when disobeying the enemy was an act of heroism?
Wykletypl 4 months ago
@goldyn12345 Well....in the film thay were 'awesome'. In reality however, eh............well, let's just say the casultis for the Poles were high and their kills were few.
grobo11 1 year ago
@grobo11 what are you on about? the poles had a very good kill rate. in fact one of the polish squadrons had the amongst the best kill rate of the battle of britain.
goldyn12345 1 year ago
@goldyn12345 Sources please.
grobo11 1 year ago
@grobo11 the polish 303 fighter squadron had the highest kill rate in the battle of britain!! check it out!! you shouldnt say crazy shit like that, its an insult to the polish pilots who put there lives on the line to defend this country. highest scoring raf squadron of the battle of britain FACT
goldyn12345 1 year ago
@goldyn12345 No I checked it, you're wrong. Also, do you think the Poles were honestly fighting for Britain? Come on, you can't honestly think that. The Poles were fighting for vengence because of the Germans invading their country. I'm sure the Polish were grateful to the British for allowing them to fight with them, but they weren't fighting the Nazi's to defend Britain.
grobo11 1 year ago
@grobo11 what history books have you been reading? you may have a point on the motives of polish fighting. but the fact of the matter is that the polish pilots shooting down luftwaffe planes directly helped britain prevent nazi invasion thus defending britain. also without the polish and czech pilots britain would have been finished the nazis would have been marching up whitehall. hugh dowding himself even said so!!
goldyn12345 1 year ago
@grobo11 : The same can be said about the Brits declaring war on Germany in response to the German attack on Poland. The Brits only declared war to safe face. The Brits declared war and proceeded to drop "leaflets" over Germany. The Brits didn't fight for Poland just like the Poles didn't fight for Britain. The Brits fought to save their own asses.
whaddupmf 4 months ago
@whaddupmf well you can't blame the poles for not fighting for britian while they where ocupied by the germans, at least a few of them tried to, unlike the british who never lifited a finger for poland
alonmerlin 4 months ago

If you collect, it's worth finding both.
buzzmaverick 2 years ago 6
Actually the version I have I think you can get both scores on the one DVD. Which is what I did here - I've got the other score - Probably the only DVD I've bought!
yamum51 2 years ago
@buzzmaverick ....US version?............is that the one where all the pilots are US pilots and save Britain and show the British pilots how to fly Spitfires.
Aussiephil99 11 months ago
@Aussiephil99 No, there are two slightly different scores for slightly different film cuts for length etc. Quite common with films to have different versions for different markets. Also the UK version has a better quote at the end of the film which would have been better remembered in the UK. The US one being one better ID'd here for those who don't quite understand what that part of the war was about. I prefer the UK version. I was talking about FILM, not HISTORY.
buzzmaverick 11 months ago
@buzzmaverick The reason for the different scores is because William Walton (the original composer) was fired during the making of the movie as his score was deemed "inappropriate" (or there about) Ron Goodwin was then hired. The only part of Waltons score that made it into the final film was "Battle in the Air"
The UK DVD as a audio option has both scores available. Also the UK soundtrack has both scores too

aces high is not that good a film unless youre really keen about this sort of thing.
The book too while being reasonably good doesnt stand out.
I wouldnt reccomend it to your average person.
If you like ww1 on the other hand its good.
