@thefourhorseman Hahaha. Are you guys tone deaf? Warren is great but nobody holds a candle to Derek Trucks. The man started touring with the Allman Brothers Band at 13. Thats saying something.
@MrFuckyouintheneck Actually, though he jammed with them a few times in 1992 (at 13), he joined ABB in 1999 @ 20. No less impressive of course, just setting the timeline straight...
This is sweet. So often, live recordings posted do not do guitar performance justice. Here, these fellows are taring it up in the green room and it sounds great! Derek's studio work is kills too!
@t0ej0b If you want to see someone that's also in the discussion check out Scott Sharrards version of Little Wing on youtube... Scott is the lead guitar player in The Gregg Allman Band
@TradeHecht derek always brings his A game but if you really want to see theses guys at there peak you need to catch a panic show when derek and warren goes out with a battle with jimmy herring its most intense thing you will ever wittness
i would say derek is the best slide player alive right now by a fucking long shot! but you gotta pay your respect to ole duane and i think derek would also say since he was his influnce and also b.b king that hes not better then them but just between us i think he may be, and warren just is one of the best all around players the only thing that this picture is missing is jimmy herring with an acoustic haha that would be unreal...
Duane Allman was better then both these guys. But I bet they'd be the first to say that. Saw Warren in Pitt just a few nights ago, he is amazing dude is one of best musicians alive. Derek is awesome to
@TradeHecht I was at the show in Pittsburgh. I will pre-face my comments by this: I saw Warren for the first time at Beacon Theatre 2011 (ABB run in NYC).. and I thought he was much better in NYC. I thought he deferred quite a bit to the saxophonist and organist. He was on another planet when he had Derek standing next to him on stage and pushing him. To see those two battle out the solo's is incredible. If you haven't seen it, you haven't seen Warren at his peak.
@Bodomchld I agree 100% sometimes I wish he'd just send everyone off the stage grab an acoustic guitar and a slide and go! Seen him at Bonnaroo twice and I am pretty sure he brings his A game there.
Ive followed the ABB since well lets just say forever, these guys came from there but have their own style rightly so.Derek is no.1 in my book, but never would i rate Warren a no.2.Both deserve a place in music history
Who disliked this!! Are they nuts!! Anyway, I miss Duane too but why is it that everyone who talks greatest slide players forgets Johnny Winter!! Live version of Highway 61 Revisited.... @dnteatylwsno9 Absolutely! Cooder has had relative commercial success, but I suggest checking out McIlwain to anyone who digs this clip and the style of blues being laid down. Man, great examples!
@kj677 Does anybody GET IT this was done in the basement of the Beacon Theatre.
No soundboard or amps just raw music at its best.Forget Johnny Winter he couldnt hold a candle to either Warren or Derek on slide .Warren is by far the hardest working musician out there today. And lets not forget he's has a helluva voice. Plays with 4 bands and is asked to guest at almost everyones shows. BTW DEREK IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST SLIDE BAR NONE n that includes Sonny landreth
@ABBFANFUKN4LIFE I think you are missing the point my man! These are the greatest players on the planet, but there are many others who join them there. Saying Johnny Winter doesn't hold a candle to them is strange as he is a hero to both of these gentleman. Yes, they have taken the blues to a new level and I love it, but they started somewhere. It's like saying Eric Clapton can't come close to touching Joe Bonamassa! Eric is his hero! I for one am glad we have all these guys keepin it alive!
@ABBFANFUKN4LIFE There isn't one better than the other, just individuality. Appreciate them all brother because, as we learned recently with the death of Gary Moore, their greatness and joy from their music can be taken at any time. Peace.
@t0ej0b Most of the guitar slingers from the sixties (other than the Blues greats) were not strong vocally (ie. Hendrix, Alvin Lee, etc). It was the total package that made them memorable and great. But you have a point brother, compared to Warren Haynes everyone has shit vocals!! Haha Peace!
@hector2010ification This is Warren's tune. It first appears on the 2003 ABB album "Hittin' the Note" - it's a great album and the only Studio ABB Album with Derek and Warren as guitarist for the band.
Music is an expression, and I get that. But you really would have to be a douche of life to dislike this. It's unprompted magic. Never have two acoustics filled the air with electric.
The best example of bottleneck blues the generation has ever seen. Absolute perfection. Thank you Derek, Warren, and the guy who posted this. THANK YOU!!!
Responding to crowesfan. Check out Sonny Landreth Zydeco Shuffle. Look at his other stuff too. Clapton introduced him on stage at the Crossroads Guitar Festival as 'my hero, Sonny Landreth' and Mark Knopfler said he was probably the best live guitarist in the world today. Personally, I love it all! : )
You can't judge guitarists from different styles on the same playing field. Buckethead: super shredding. Warren Haynes/Derek Trucks: Blues. Two completely seperate genres of music that require different levels of skill for each. On that note, Buckethead is no doubt a thrilling guitarist. However Warren and Derek are also incredible. I have seen them both about 4-5 times with the Allman Brothers. Couldn't say better things about their playing. Derek's stage presence is statuesque to say the least
There`s thousands of great musicians out there who you`ll never hear. My own personal choices of great guitarists all have an attribute that , in the beginning, was the whole purpose of playing.... I can feel what they play, no matter how fast or technical, it`s all about relaying emotion. You newbies out there keep that in mind when your praising people like buckethead or some of those lightnin fast players. Fast doesn`t mean a thing, fat does.
Well guys when you start the "who`s best" thing there`s never a resolution. That`s like trying to say any person is the "best" guitarist ever. He or she may be great but at what? which style? which era? etc.etc. Yes Derek is ONE of the best slide guitarist ever but Warren has won best slide guitarist a few times in his life. Yes todays music is crap for the most part which is controlled by teenie boppers because the parents are too broke to buy CD`s or tickets. The music industry is a racket
@guitars777actually the best guitarist one is easy its buckethead no proffesional will disagree big b is plays things that no other human can he may not be able to play the way he used to but he has taken the instrument the beyond anyone and does it with a mask and kfc bucket on his head

Appreciate any help, thanks!
Great video, thanks for posting. No matter who your favorite artist is, it must be awesome to be in their living room while they are just playing around like this.
@ezekielwahwah respect to duane he laid the foundation for derek, but i think derek takes slide to another level. i think we can agree duane would be proud
@ezekielwahwah I have to think of it like this, Derek was born just a few years after Duane. Warren and Gregg touched on it a bit in a Guitar World interview, Greg saying "I don't know if I believe in reincarnation, but if you listen to Duane, and where he was when he passed away, and you listen to Derek when he joined the band, it's almost like a continuation." So, we won't ever know what Duane was capable of, except in the shadow and guise of Derek, he's the closest we'll ever get.
@ezekielwahwah i'm going to have to disagree and even say he's better than duane. you can't pull the "what would have been" card because no one will ever know. you gotta take what they gave when they were here, and derek has surpassed duane. derek is the greatest slide player ever.
@ezekielwahwah 24?? fuck man, I would seriously have said he was about 45, wow that's what showbiz does for you i guess? thanks for telling me though.
@crowesfan1332 Couldn't agree more about Duane Allman. If you haven't listened to "Live at Fillmore East.." Listen to the first 3 songs on Disc #1.. And the long jams on Disc #2 (Whipping Post, Mountain Jam). Your spine will be numb from Duane's pure genious.
@Bodomchld Live at the fillmore is the blueprint for which all musical genius is based no doubt. One thing I don't understand... what are these disc's you speak of? Vinyl... brother ...Vinyl. peace to all
@crowesfan1332 Warren aint no slouch with the slide himself. I've seen him with Gvmt Mule and The WHB several times. Up close and personal. Derek 'is' amazing though.
@pistolpaul21 Hm. Well for me, I have to use a pick to get a stronger sound out of my resonator which has heavy gauge strings, but with normal acoustic guitars or electrics I think there is no difference
@pistolpaul21 some of the best slide players use there fingers youve got much more versatility with your fingers so much more you can do. the only exception roy rogers uses his fingers and a flat pick and that guy blows your fuckin mind.
wow you hear the drummer talkin a little shit at the begining doin that thing where he answers questions that are not a dderssed to him yeah no I think ill go ...............
i didnt hear him talking shit but youre right he sure did leave in a hurry, maybe he had a hot date? or maybe hes tired of his nephew stealing all the thunder at such a young age. haha.
poor butch he never gets the respect he deserves, a loyal man all the way through and through and a great addition to the ABB too..
@caveman1968 well iv watched this 100s off times I think it has something to do with dereks father he seems disrespected by them playin this or offended by the fact that warren is goating derek into playin this song theres alot more to this vid than just the music you can see the broken relationship between the band members
Yea oggi3 drop d is the correct tuning. It amazes me how Warren can wear a ring finger slide and still make all the chords not playing in an open tuning. Esspecially in the early ninties when he playing all duanes parts before dickey left.
I love these guys!!! They are really awesome musicians and really nice guys!!! I miss the beacon theater and the wetlands... I miss NYC and going to see these guys!!!
@Honeypietwinny Went and saw them 2 nights in a row this past spring brother. Was there for the 40th Anniversary show of Live at the Fillmore East. Just pure magic to the ears.
The beginning slide dual or whatever you wanna call it, made me cry. Powerful shit right there.

Bodomchld 5 months ago
@Bodomchld Live at the fillmore is the blueprint for which all musical genius is based no doubt. One thing I don't understand... what are these disc's you speak of? Vinyl... brother ...Vinyl. peace to all
crowesfan1332 5 months ago
@crowesfan1332 Warren aint no slouch with the slide himself. I've seen him with Gvmt Mule and The WHB several times. Up close and personal. Derek 'is' amazing though.

Amazes me how Trucks plays with no pic.....maybe normal to most....but it blows me away......Warren sings his soul out.....!!!
pistolpaul21 6 months ago
@pistolpaul21 Hm. Well for me, I have to use a pick to get a stronger sound out of my resonator which has heavy gauge strings, but with normal acoustic guitars or electrics I think there is no difference
ridgeruna 6 months ago
@pistolpaul21 some of the best slide players use there fingers youve got much more versatility with your fingers so much more you can do. the only exception roy rogers uses his fingers and a flat pick and that guy blows your fuckin mind.

@dellinger1000 ?
i didnt hear him talking shit but youre right he sure did leave in a hurry, maybe he had a hot date? or maybe hes tired of his nephew stealing all the thunder at such a young age. haha.
poor butch he never gets the respect he deserves, a loyal man all the way through and through and a great addition to the ABB too..
caveman1968 6 months ago
@caveman1968 well iv watched this 100s off times I think it has something to do with dereks father he seems disrespected by them playin this or offended by the fact that warren is goating derek into playin this song theres alot more to this vid than just the music you can see the broken relationship between the band members

Derek trucks has a really long thumb.....like its huge.
ttristan97 6 months ago
Yea oggi3 drop d is the correct tuning. It amazes me how Warren can wear a ring finger slide and still make all the chords not playing in an open tuning. Esspecially in the early ninties when he playing all duanes parts before dickey left.
jingram5353 6 months ago
Btw Trucks is playing in Open D ( D A D F# A D) rather than his usual open E. Warren, as always is playing in standard.
jingram5353 6 months ago
verses are D F G
Chorus is. Am C G
jingram5353 6 months ago
any one with a better ear than mine know what tuning they are in?
akxeman 6 months ago
@akxeman Warren is in drop D- low to high( DADGBE), and Derek is in open D tuning low to high (DADF#AD).
oggi3 6 months ago
@oggi3 Thanks! I knew Derek was in open D, but the tuning Warren was in was throwing me. Figures it would be something as simple as drop D standard!
