You're comparing a 3.2 inline 6 to a friggin V8 corvette?? Dumbest thing ever. The E46 M3 uses 2001 technology and it still held up pretty friggin well for a shitty little 3.2L.
The interesting thing is the new Corvette gets better mpg than the new M3 with a bigger engine, more hp and much more torque. Talking about cutting edge technology sometimes looks alot better on paper than in practice.
@Marc99GT well also a stock M3 is roughly 350 hp where a LS3 Vette is over 400hp..so yeah its so real comparison..M3 vs a C5 would be a different story
The LS3 Corvettes smack around the E92 M3s as well quite easily. The autos trap 117-118 mph. C&D tested an 08 C6 Convertible auto, which is the slowest and heaviest of the C6 Corvettes. It ran 12.4 @ 116 mph. Against a base C5, I agree. A C5 Z06 would hand the M3 a beating as well.
@Marc99GT for sure bro, the C5Z keeps up with the C6 coupes no problem. I am not sure how the C5Z would do against the new grandsport though with the more track oriented package. I am a corvette fan but In drive a 370z LOL so I am not bashing the C5Z at all just stating the facts of the grandsport vs the coupe
@psmTARDCORE The C5Z06 is a serious machine even by todays standards. It beats the hell out of the E92 M3 on the Ring by about 9 seconds. GM was truly onto something with the C5 and then the C5Z. With the C6, they made the LS3 run even with the C5Z and the C6Z a freaking monster. I have been in my customers' 07 Z06 and it hits 120 real quick. With a drag radial alone, it is a 10 second car. I just read about the Z06 Carbon, it is unreal. The C7 is coming also.
@Marc99GT thats what I think I am going to wait for. Before I bought my 370z, I was looking a 2009 E92 M3, 2010 EVO GSR, 10 STi, and a 2010 corvette grandsport. I REALLY wish I would have been more patient and waited the 4 months to buy the vette and regret it now. But hopefully in 2014 or summer of 2013 when the C7 comes out I'll be able to get one. Although I think it might be wise to wait a year because GM is changing the whole drivetrain from what I have seen and read
@lindstrem: It has a clutch... the e46 m3 with smg has the same manual transmission as the manual e46 m3 does. The only thing different is that the clutch is depressed by a hydraulic pump.
actually, the smg is a Sequential Manual Gearbox. The SMG II M3 features exactly the same 6 speed gearbox (Getrag D) like the manual M3 - there is no torque convertor.
In the newer m3's (2007-present) it is the DCT = Double Clutch Transmission, which is what you were talking about. And since the M3 in the video is an e46 m3, it is NOT the DCT but the SMG transmission.
Comparing a M3 to a Z06 is like comparing apples to oranges.

hm, I guess this where I come in and tell you that it is an e46 m3 in the video. The all new V8 e90/e92 m3 is much faster. The e90 M3 (sedan), traps 112mph in the 1/4 mile, the e92 (coupe) 113mph-114mph. The LS3 vette traps 115mph. This is mostly because it has much more torque down low, but will the high rev'd M3 reel the long geared LS3 vette on the top end...physics say it most likely will. Not to mention the new M-DCT tranny permits uninterrupted shifts and constant acceleration.
Bone stock my LS3 vette trapped 119.94 MPH when I ran my 11.7... I've posted my video.
By the way, the power in the LS3 does not die off. The car is electronically limited to 195 mph (and I think drag limited too as you have to shift to 6th then).
The M3 is electronically limited to 155 mph. Physics would tell you that the M3 won't catch up.
Going by physics the clear winner is the Vette. Power to wieght in the vette is 7.55 lbs per hp and the m3 is 8.4. The vette is underrated too.
As I was saying. The M-DCT allows the M3 to trap up to 4mph more in the 1/4 mile than the Manual tranny'd M3. This means that the e90 will be trapping around 115-116mph and the e92 around 118mph. Not to mention they carry an engine that is 2.2L smaller, better quality and technology, better looks, more class and 2-3 extra seats. LS3 is a good car though. The ZR1 will be amazing.
As for that automatic (not really an auto, I know) it is an excellent tranny. Props to bmw.

The M3 just has better gearing up top. Your run is a personal run, I gave you an average run. Im sure some M3 driver out there will strip his M3 down, play with the tire psi, wait for the right weather, use the small amount of fuel in the car, etc, to run a perfect time as well.

6L80 6 speed auto LS3 owns SMG M3. No shock. That new 6 speed auto in the vette is a monster and handles tons of power because of its design.
