On a car ride with Lou Thesz, Lou told Bret stories of the old days of wrestling.
"Ed Strangler Lewis, Thesz’s mentor, was impossible to beat, so he eventually worked a title loss just to pump some new blood into the business and make a nice payoff—and that was when it had all changed."
Damn. I'm not even sure if this was choreagraphed or an actual wrestling match. These guys were real wrestlers. In a history of pro wrestling I read, it listed Lewis as one of the most important people, that his group started the idea of storylines and feuds with flyers that would explain how there was a match because this guy did something to that guy, etc, also that Lewis invented the sleeper hold and once he clamped on a headlock, if the guy got out it was because Lewis let him out.
Frank Gotch, Georg Hackenschmidt, Ed Lewis, Mitsuhiro Momota (Rikidozan), Buddy Rogers, & Satoru Sayama (Tiger Mask I). The true pioneers of the sport that was and is wrestling. Great classic upload, thank you :).
Ed "Strangler" Lewis actually defeated Ed Don George for the World Championship in a no-rope barbed wire, hell in a cell, ladder match after hitting a shooting star press 20 minutes into the match.
Are you fucking dumb? Stupid, slow, dropped on your head as an infant? Everyone knows Ed finished off Don George with an explosive Thunder Fire Bomb seconds after clearing the ring of George's nWo lackeys.
But you forgot to mention that Lewis had countered the go to sleep in the 14th minute of the match leaving George & the crowd totally stunned, enough so that it attracted the attention of space aliens that decided to destroy the planet & put an end of that parallell universe. Man, those were the glory days...
oh yeah forgot that, but remember when george used lewis' arm to pull off a barbed wire rope and then proceeded to stap lewis in the eyes with it? thats why lewis went blind, silly goose!
thank you, i watched the story of wrestling on the bio channel and have been interested in seeing the strangler in action, you really know your stuff thanks
Thank you so much for researching, finding and uploading this event. Your contributions to the history of wrestling, and to the history of popular culture in America, are sensational. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
