@jjfranky123 Sure, but it's also easier to replace a cracked windshield with a piece of plywood, or to find a refrigerator box instead of buying a house. :p
Thanks for posting this video. I'm going to be fixing one of my car speaker foam rings soon. The only other choice was going over to the jeep dealer and paying $170+ for a new speaker because it has a stupid amp attached to it.
@dragossh Google "refoam speaker kit" There are several sellers online, and the kits are not very expensive. (A 12 inch woofer kit costs about $12-$16 US per speaker.)
humm.. how did they check that the voice coil was not close to the magnet, I mean I saw no specific centering goin g on here. I'm looking for a video to ensure centering. My LX1000 bass uint only need a minor touch on one side (the foam has almost gone by itself, and one immediately notices the contact of coil to magnet which I want to avoid by perfect centering if I try to refoan (with rubber this time!!!) myself.Anyone guidance would be appreciated.
@trident3b Good point ! in my opinion -or as i would do- i'll just make the spider do the centering and leave the (cone and foam gluing to the end ) but i don't think it would work !! i'll think about it
rubbing alcohol helps a lot when removing the old surround/gasket material. it softens it up and also cleans the surface so the glue sticks better. just make sure the alcohol dries before applying the glue.
Please put a note on your video to never use the chisel in that manner where you point it toward your own hand. Always point the chisel away from your hand while using it!
Boooo! The dust cap should have been removed as you need to shim the voice coil to make sure the voice coil is centered. Otherwise it's a total crap shoot as to whether is will have voice coil rubbing or not. Otherwise, it was a pretty good video.
@89grand What are you talking about? The only way to achieve what you say is to play a REALLY low freq, high power signal in the woofer while the glue is still drying.
@MrEinstain What? When you refoam a speaker, after you remove the old surround, you also remove the dust cap, then before you glue the new surround on you put 4 shims between the voice coil and pole piece to keep the cone centered while you glue the surround on. Not doing it, like this video, results in hit or miss results. It's a lot of work to refoam a speaker just to find out the voice coil rubs afterwards because you didn't do it properly and skipped a step.
@89grand Mate, of what do you speak? I'm right in the middle or re-foaming me speakers & I thought it was a piece of piss to do. Have I missed a step then?
@GanjaStuPipesUp Well, I don't know. Some people prefer to use shims between the voice coil and pole piece and some people use low frequency test tones. If the particular speaker has a tight gap, you want to use one of the methods.
@mazda2284 the foam is completely rotten off i managed to find a new pair of apm drivers but they are 1inch smaller than the original so they don't fit in the box perfectly but atleast i can get music from them...i uploaded onto my profile on youtube take a look.
The only speakers I really love are Mission speakers from the 80's, so natureally the rubber is pretty-far gone on them by the time I get my hands on a pair. After about 6 months I've been throwing them away because the rubber has rotted! Aaaargggghh! I can't believe it never occured to me to repair my speakers before.
Appreciate the effort, but that is an accident waiting to happen with that chisel....pushing it into your hand. Don't ask how I know that :). You HAVE to remove the dust cap and shim it. How on earth can you center it that way? Shims would eliminate the need to empty your laundry basket too. Oh well.
@PeI2PeTuaLMoTioN I actually did a good deal of asking around and figured out the kicker has a subwoofer upgrade program for 72 bucks a sub. Considering Ive had the subs for 10 years and that is a $60 price cut ill take it.
@jarederajarederaj ok... im saying play the speaker without the foam and then play it with the foam after you are done refoaming... does it sound any difference???
@kibidk dude... he isn't reconing it. He's just replacing the surround. He can't align it with shims unless he takes the dust cap out. Besides, it's not like he took the spider out
@david96888 That may be....dude. But as you can see I'm not the only one who thinks this isn´t the best way to do it. The spider alone and this "kitchen-pot and clothpin technique" is not enough to ensure perfect alignment of the voicecoil. So yes, a correct refoaming includes removal of the dustcap.
@kibidk just run 6 to 9 volts of dc thru the speaker when your ready to align the coil in the gap...saves removing the dustcap and using shims on the former..just an old school tip for those who wanna know
hey i was gonna buy some memphis mojos 12'' from this guy because his dog chewed the foam off.. um do you know where i can find the foam kit for 12 inch memphis mojo subs? pleassse let me know thanks
The foam gets old and dry rots, just kind of falls apart-- thats why I like the surrounds on my old Pioneer HPM100's, thier pleated cloth with a rubber coating, theyre tough and will never rot. I do love my cerwin vegas though, one of the best speakers out there. -
And for proof, because I am a type of person who backs up himself to prove myself correct, I have an 8" woofer that has no surround, but a 100% in tact perfect spider, and it moves side to side when you push it. A fly could move it! It was made of the material spiders are made of, and it was a perfect, non-crappy woofer. Like I said, I know this, the spider alone cannot hold it!
Yeah, negative two because an audio professional that knows how to do this says the right thing, mature people.
cumesoftware, your wrong. Yes, the spider centers it, but the main job of the spider is to keep the voice coil from popping out of the magnet gap and not popping back in. Without the surround, the cones weight can move the spider from side to side. The spider cannot hold it in center alone. And with the press of a finger while pushing down the surround, it will move it.
Our guess is that with a good spider, 80% of the centering is done by the spider. The rest by the ring. The main function of the ring is to make movement possible and close the speaker, not centering!
@WooferRepair Thanks, but I do know how speakers work, I buld enclosures, repair speakers, and have built my own, winding the voice coil aswell. Now for one, it doesn't sound so good on your part calling the surround the ring, its just not what its called. Secondly, it depends on the spider. If you have a multiple layer spider, maybe, but not a single spider, unless a rugged one. And what do you mean by saying close to the speaker? The surround doesn't move the woofer. And the coil is centered..
Wrong, this is worth a quarter star! All wrong. You need to take the dust cap of (the bump in the center) and insert shims between the coil and magnet gap!!!! Without the voice coil, the coil is free to move side to side! So now you probably put the surround on, and the subwoofer is a bit off its axis, and now you cannot push it as hard because it will rub against the pole. Don't follow this person
And again, there's more then one way to do it. Please don't flame our way unless you tried it. And again: how will you refoam a Dynaudio 24Wxxx woofers where the cone and the dust-cap are one piece? Please tell all the people who were interested in this small tip your way.
i did my own version of a "refoam" using a pair of 10" MCS woofers. I made a mock foam ring with painters tape, and used black silicone to cover it over and attach tape to basket. works like new, took about 40 minutes, and only cost about $2 in supplies:-)
This should be called a tutorial how NOT TO DO IT. Basket and membrane must be perfectly clear of all old glue an polyuretane. That is done by chemicals, not by fingers. If you whant to center it properly, you must remove the dust cap. This woman is an amater. Please do not try refoaming woofers this way.
