I agree with Duraan84. Good music has no color. But we all must remember that Black people invented rock music. Also, let's not forget that Jimi Hendrix (along with Cream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, etc.) paved the way for metal due to his pioneering of heavy distortion and feedback.
In reference to taste. I will modify it slightly. Coporations do not play the essential role of "dictating" musical taste. That is generated from society.
Lastly on your point, if the media could sell anything that is heavily airplayed why do songs flop? The notion that music is popular due to exposure implies that anything that gets heavy airplay will be succesful. I have seen many R&B songs, and pop songs that flop with heavy intial airplay.
I agree on those four factors especially #4. So therefore the risk that corporations take when promoting rock music to the black community is #4. Being horrible is a subjective term and I hate to say this but I would take the risk playing Slayer at a pred-black party. Why because the vast majority not all, will find it repelling. I am black person who loves metal music but to the reality is that the music is unappealing. That indicates to me that the corporations never did or can dictate tastes.
Marilyn Manson,Jurrasic 5,Kottonmouth Kings,The Human Abstract,Hellogoodbye,Whole Wheat Bread,Korn,Necro,Bury your DEad,Darkest Hour,Rolling Stones,Nirvana,Linkin park,Nas,KMFDM,Dead Kenndeyse,Lupe Fiasco,Pentagram,Hawthrone Heights,Rancid,Red Hot Chilli peppers,Faith no more,Slayer etc. These are all good artist check em out and thier are more than this and actual its MAINSTREAM HIP-HOP is dead , not the underground
I miss the days when we had great black MUSICIANS in popular music. The Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, etc. Most young black people dont feel like they need to learn to play an instrument when all they need to do is rap (basically just talk shit), anyone can do that, im sorry but that takes zero talent. Lionel ritchie, Miles Davis, thats talent. Kanye West? lol, give me a break!
Durran I disagree with that point of view. Coporations did not create hip hop and rap. The new R&B which was called soul in the 1960s overtake blues and Little Richard R&B dominance of the mid to late 50s.
I am sorry dude, we can hold whites accountable for so much. If hip hop was created in the black community, there was a potential fan base before it was sold by BET. Any corp, white, chinese, jew or black owned only sells what they will make a profit on. So it is the market who dictates what is bought and what is culture.
All CEOS want to air what will sell. Airing things that are risks are a risk to business. That is why some things are not aired. Why should they risk dollars for social revolution? That is why you have an underground. When other genres prove that they can be marketable, they will be sold.
Case in point do you think any corporatoin run by whomever will sign a group who does not have an underground fan base already established. Nope. The underground subculture dictates what will be cool.
I feel you but you must see it through their eyes as well. Airing anything new or evolutionary is a risk? It could cost jobs if done too frequently. I know corporatoins are often greedy, but it seems we blame them too much for social problems or not being revoltuionary enough.

rock music is going more widespread thruout the communities now. it might be for any reason but my thinking is one of 2
1) big names eg; pharral, snoop dogg ect.. are using more instruments, relating their music more to rock/metal, anything like this
2) its a TREND! its not just coloured people who dont like/ like it, its anyone.
thats my thort :)
peace

There's alot of reasons why songs flop. This is by no means a definitive list.
1.Underpromotion
2.Considered outlandish or ahead of it's time.
3.Being a retread of something already successful.
4.Being just plain horrible.

I can't totally blame corporations. I should credit
so-called black culture telling us how to be black.
There are more black people like us who like
hard-rock & metal, but are embarrassed to admit it because of how they will be judged by other
blacks.
Bottom line: good music has no color.
PS; I agree metal is unappealing to the masses.

What many black youths don't seem to notice is that
what is "black" is dictated to them by corporations,
ie, white people. They control which blacks are heard.

No, I don't think the corporations invented hip hop. But I feel we are told what is black by
non-black persons. BET for instance is owned and run by Viacom.
Viacom must approve of whatever BET aires. so
black entertainment is being defined by middle-aged white men. (look up Viacoms board of
directors).

solving our own problems.

If I understand you correctly, corporations are
always going to use low-risk/high reward products to turn profits.
