As a Vietnam vet, this video brought back many memories....both the good and the bad, but so truly felt. Things that changed the fabric of my life and who I am now is what happened then. This song speaks volumes. The Leon Russell version of this song also is timely for me and the better version for me.
we do know this is a protest song right? Dylan thought we where all about to die and wrote this, each line is a song he wanted to right but did not think he would have time to.
@Bobbypeek4 dylan said himself that it wasn't about anything in particular, if i remember right the actual quote when asked what it was about was "its... its about a hard rain", he did say that all of the lines were supposed to be song titles, but not in the sense that he couldnt get it done, in the sense that he just made a song out of them all (and at the time, he was sick of being portrayed as the protest song movements poster child)
I fell in love with this song when I was a teenager (about 20 years ago) and now my son has shown interest in this song. Thank-you for songs that make us think.
Hey "trueespot", get your head out of your ass. The vedio is not about war, it's about brave Americans solders and their families . Dylan aimed the song at the Soviet Union putting missiles in Cuba and bringing the world to the brink of nuclear war. You do remember the Soviet Union, huh? Dylan lives in Israel and you can trust that he and Israelis knew the Soviet Union for what is was-an evil empire.
This song always stirs my emotions as it is. Your powerful images only add to it. I've been sitting hear listening with my headphones on and tears streaming down my cheaks . God bless all who suffer at the horrible hands of war. God bless those who live in harmony as well.
Dylan intension with this song, was never to support any one side, but to ask that we stop for a moment, and think about the true cost of war, and it affects those on both sides of the struggle, who are down in the "mud" day in, and day out.
Casualties of war occur on all sides, up to and including those that serve and "survived" the conflicts.
To me, the song ask that we stop, think, and remember all innocent victims -- including the Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and Airmen (men & women), wh
Good morning, friends! An excellent version of the classic Bob Dylan song to get this day started- it sure seems appropriate today! Enjoy, take care, and be safe! Good morning, Beth and Lu!
@truedespot Exactly. The song's about waste, pain, destruction, death and a lot of other things that cannot be compenstated for with medals and stripes.
@truedespot funny how a song is so well put with images it obviously wasnt meant for,but then again there is hope in there eyes and the eyes of the others the sisters and brothers of the ones with guns who.......................................stand in the rain.
@gedsace Actually, the song has always been associated with war, death, being treated unfairly, although the Dylan himself stated it is vague because each line is simply a starting line for a song he thought he'd never write. Yet, with that in mind, the lyrics still fit....
I intend to use the video with my class this week, but they might mention the irony of a protest song againt militarism (etc) being used seemingly in support of it
@FernandezMac I support the soldiers and their families for their service and sacrifice , sometimes but not always the policies or politics. There is much tragedy in war for all involved. Good luck in your class. Thanks for visiting.!
You`ve made a truly wonderful video.....-about how it can work out when You`ve got leaders who let their hearts & ideals instead of their heads run their execution of foreign policies....americans feel there is a speial duty to resist dictatorial adventurist / militarist expansionism and repression....allied soldiers and their families pays the ultimate price....G-D BLESS THEM !
I love this version so much.. it makes me think of all the horror both my granddad's fought through, one fought in the IRA aganest the british as a sniper/sapper during 1916 while at the same time the granddad on the othyer side of my family fought in the battle of the Somme and Galippily which were both described as the worst battle in WW1... he survived both :) thank you so much for uploadin :))
Mankind has not risen above the petty reasons for war. Maybe someday everyone can see the futility of war. It`s a small planet as things go in a vast universe. Someday we will rise above all of this.
quaker, sometimes we have to carry guns and fire bullets to stop bad people -- because they won't stop hurting others. wars are necessary in such cases and a positive effect is achieved when law, order, and peace returns. i'm a christian and know for as long as there is sin, there will always be wars between good and evil, manifested on every level -- from large world wars to within ourselves, inside. god bless, may you win the fight against evil everday.
There are those who love peace and do nothing to protect peace. Then there are those who put it on the line for those who will do nothing. Yes, the bible says the peacemakers will inherit the earth, but it unfortunately take those persons who sacrifice to make the peace.
As a Quaker, I, too, feel so terribly sad that there are still wars when we human beings should have learned that there is nothing positive that can be achieved by them. I just listened to Joan Baez singing this great Bob Dylan song. I suppose you know Joan's parents were Quakers, too. I had the good fortune to do volunteer work (with children of prisoners at Soledad Prison) with Joan Senior through our Friends Meeting in California. What special memories. Thanks for posting this for us.
@Somewheremaybe I hate you.USArse people. If i had the choice killing you all and dying,i would act so..You don't know how much i hate and disgust you all...
@gebis Why don't you just crawl into a hole and die you idiotic retarded moron, I guarantee you will not be missed, and the rats will enjoy the feast...
@AnnieStone I just wanted to express my thanks to you and your fellow Quakers for showing that the world is a better place with peace, tolerance and a bowl of those wonderful oats you all make for us.
This song just reminds us the horrible things of war. I wish there was no war or military, but sadly that will never change for human nature won't allow it.
I don't think it is any question about human nature, or better, it is not a mere fact of "nature". War is first of all an economic fact caused by greed and economic interests which are strictly connected with the capitalistic and neoliberistic nature of our societies.
@redrastas Thanks, you expressed my point exactly. I know Dylan's always said lyrics meant what one think it means, but this song is about the ugliness of the current social and economic system. The pellets of poison are the press tainting the minds of the citizens. It is not by any means a pro-military song.
