  • Canadian poet George Washington Johnson wrote this song for or his newly married wife Maggie Clark, who was dying of TB. He published it in 1864 in a collection of poetry called "Maple Leaves"

  • Love it.. I still have one of his records here..and I still sing many of the part every time I have too much Lagavulin

  • Wow, saw him in Elgin Town hall many many moons ago. Love this song so much ,used to Andy Stewart singing it. Alec Finlays voice has so much feeling in it just marvellous to hear this.

  • Hi Karloffthedog, Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you enjoy it. William

  • So wonderful to hear Alec Finlay again.

I remember his shows at the little Cosy Corner theatre in Dunoon. He was an inspiration and fondly remembered.

  • Hi Allan, I'm glad you have enjoyed it. I'll be putting more in when I get round to it. I've actually met him and a nicer man you couldn't meet. William

  • Wonder if he ever got the credit for writing the song. Or did his family ever get the royalties for what was to become a big hit long after his death.

Probably not, life's sometimes unfair, but an interesting piece of musical history.

  • Hi Nacho, He very probably didn't. He called it "The engineer", all someone had to do was take out the speaking part, speed up the tempo a bit and call it "When You And I Were Young Maggie" It is so unfair. William
