german high comman may have been full of nazis but luftwaffe was as far from nazis as anything in 1930's-1940's could be. and furthermore luftwaffe isnt just nazi germanys air force it's been germanys air force as long as there has been aircraft in the country. it's connection to nazis limits to being under government filled with nazis for a decade.

Germany is such a neat looking country. I lived there from 1987-1991.  Never saw a Starfighter. I think the Tornado had replaced them by then.

It didn´t deserve to be called a widowmaker in the Luftwaffe. Luftwaffe had by far the greatest number of starfighters--around 900--so it is obvious that their loses were high. We in Denmark had 56 starfighters, and lost 13. Also high loses compared to the numbers we had. The fact is that the starfighter was a very demanding and unforgiving aircraft to fly. But also one of the great aircraft of all time. Sadly I didn´t get the chance to se the german Wiking display team.

@CloneShift In der Vergangenheit mehrmals am Himmel gesehen. Verglichen mit Typen wie Phantom, Draken, Hunter oder zum Beispiel sogar Mirage (!) war dies ein absoluter PSYCHO-FLIEGER, unverzeihlich und wortwörtlich blitzschnell! Irgenwie GRAUSAM elegant!

Saw the German air force fly these planes in an airshow at Moffett Field, CA and it still marks as one of the fastest airplanes I have ever seen. My flight instructor told me the protocol for a stall in a an F-104 is: bail out! I don't think he was joking! LOL

On 13 January 1967, four Republic of China (Taiwan) Air Force F-104s aircraft engaged a formation of 12 MiG-19s of the People's Liberation Army Air Force over the disputed island of Kinmen. One MiG-19 was shot down.

It had a design quirk that had some bolts in the wing flaps installed upside down. An old lady in the factory thought it was incorrect to install upside down and installed these bolts right side up. When the plan flew inverted, flex in the wings would jam these incorrectly installed bolts into the mechanism that controls the flaps and the plane would lose control. Several pilots where killed. This is according to Chuck Yeagers autobiography.

Das Verteidigungsministerium, allen voran Franz-Josef Strauß wollte den Starfighter als Rückrad der Deutschen Luftverteidigung. Eine Aufgabe die der Starfighter nicht gewachsen war. Das Flugzeug wurde nachträglich mit Elektronik, Waffen und sonstigen Gerätschaften regelrecht "vollgestopft" obwohl es dafür gar nicht gebaut wurde. Außerdem war der Starfighter nicht ausgereift, man kann sagen ein Prototyp. Zwischen Entwurf und Erstflug lagen gerade einmal 3 Jahre. Heutzutage unvorstellbar!

deltafulcrum.I'm very sorry for the delay. there was not missiles on the F-104. just M61 Vulcan 20 mm Gatling gun. but i'm not sure, the italian F-104S was upgraded to carry 2 AIM-9 Sidewinder or 2 AIM-7 Sparrow ( air-to-air missiles )

Hello Zimolaviation.

The F-104 G in Luftwaffe service was armed with Vulcan and 2 sidewinder.

In Italy the S version was armed with 2 sidewinder and 2 Sparrow. After, the ASA version was armed with 2 sidewinder and 2 Aspide. But not Vulcan for S and ASA version.

The Starfighter is beautiful.

stregaverona: Beautiful? The Starfighter was the biggest aircraft-misunderstanding since 1945! The F-104 was a widowmaker!

During its period of service with the German armed forces, about 290 German Starfighters were lost in accidents, just under 30 percent of the total force. Exactly 116 pilots were killed.

Canada had the unenviable record of losing over 50 percent of its 200 single-seat CF-104s in flying accidents.

When you are zipping along at just under the mach some 10-15 metres above the ground, stuff happens. The 104 was a sterling piece of kit, and no-one who flew it or worked on it will dispute this.
